Lotsa shitty things in the world when I arrived. And anyone or anything living could be me, since I don't think anyone even chose to be human, nor when and where they were born. So it's in my interest to fix shit up and not make it worse -- I could be the next kid born into this world.
It kinda sucks that the sliders for their metrics didn't carry over on the archive version, since without it the article is pretty empty.
I also find the title rage inducing. Yeah, it's not exactly a surprise either. But still pretty fucked up when Minnesota showed (and continues to) something very powerful facing this shit, rather than just being part of the story. I'd argue their actions even hold weight against moving towards autocracy with in their little slider thingies.

During the call, attendees spoke about making political donations to Adams, and about how the business leaders could urge Columbia's president and trustees to permit the mayor to send police on campus.

Another idea is to work with it in the meantime. Threads like this make people aware. Comics that make fun of this stuff or show the opposite side of the coin, etc.
But I think if it became the norm, instances can be straight-up blocked who don’t do have this process, even if many people use it. As people will see the good stuff is elsewhere and anyone who cares enough will do this little extra step. (the philosophy of being active in good places to grow them)
In other words. If this became a real thing, any respectable instance could just not federate with instances that don't have this process.
I think the way forward as the next line of defense is to vet accounts. This has been suggested before and I believe quite a few instances do it already. Similar thing on Mastodon.
It doesn't have to be a strict process, to start with anyway, but at least require people to write a quick paragraph of why they want to join.

I don't recommend you play DotA. You can be kept hostage for over two hours there by griefers! Though I think it's a lot less hardcore now the way it's balanced, and there's behavior score.
It's a hard thing to balance game ruining behavior in public games, especially when there is ranking/ELO.
I had over 10k hours in DotA. But pubs just became psychological torture at some point. A pro actually said, the way he reaches the top in the public ladder is to be psychologically on top of your game. And basically babysitting the psyche of your entire team, as they are similar rank to you skill wise, but might lose their shit after one mistake, or whatever, which happens on both teams.
My conclusion was that these games are great, but best enjoyed with pre-set teams or private leagues.
Rocket league was kinda leisure for me, as the games are so short. Also lots of fun to just practice flip resets, air dribbles, and so on in the freeplay training mode. But it's still frustrating and mundane, when you're forced into a certain playstyle in order to win no matter how your teammates play, rather than playing off of each other more.
If you like retro games, there's Batocera.linux for example. It comes with a lot of games out of the box, but you can add more ROMs of course. It's just a bit of a process to get all the artwork for them to make things look nice and all.
