as alive as you need me to be

  • I said I met a bunch of Japanese people from Japan, and also lived in areas with Japanese Americans.

... who often host visitors who are Japanese, from Japan.

    1. The entire country is literally a scam.
  • ... eh?

I've met and known a fair number of Japanese people from spending a fairly significant amount of time doing Karate, and living in areas of the US with significant numbers of Japanese immigrants, 2nd 3rd or 4th generation.

Most of those I met were actually quite funny, making puns and jokes... in my experience, they would make a good number of jokes based around the difficulty they have learning/speaking English, and the difficulty English speakers have learning/speaking Japanese... like, very self-aware humor, self-deprecating sarcasm, sarcastic jabs, etc.

I actually learned the "Don't touchee my moustache" 'joke' from a Japanese person ... explaining to me that that had started as a common English speaker corruption of dou itashimashite... I remember feeling a strange kind of ... 3rd hand embarassment, if that makes any sense.

... maybe we just met/knew different groups of Japanese people? I don't think I met too many uh... salaryman types... ???

I mean, honestly what I think is that... well in America, I'm an introverted autistic nerd with a sense of humor that is too complicated and particular for most Americans. Compared to most Japanese I've met? I am a polite yet clever, outgoing goofball.

I think most Americans are just basically just extroverted assholes with fragile egos and projection problems, whose 'humor' is mostly based around genuinely insulting other people, but with flashy/evocative vocabulary.

  • Good!

Then you're not going back to Twitter, so you're not part of that category.

  • Honestly I personally, selfishly, hope Lemmy never gets anywhere near Facebook or Twitter huge.

Most people are fucking boring idiot assholes, full of actually boring and stupid ideas and opinions they only think are clever or notable because them and their social circle are broadly ignorant and hypnotized by marketing.

I prefer a smaller community where people at least tend toward not being idiots, and not being boring.

I don't want to hear from a celebrity, as their celebrity self.

I don't want advertising to be viable.

You are right; most people do not care about things that they should, if they actually believed half the things they say they do. Most people are enormously massive hypocrites about most things, whether theyre aware of that or not.

I am under no illusion that people, broadly, when freely handed the solution to a large chunk of their problems, will use it, if it means they suffer any kind of inconvenience whatsoever.

I am under no illusion that most people want what they claim they want; they just want to be popular, or be where the most other people are.

If Bluesky dies and the users go back to Twitter, they never believed in anything more than 'I want to be part of the herd.'

What you identify as a lack of water, I see as a functioning primary filtration system that prevents microplastic infected water from coming in to the system.

    Keep Lemmy Weird.

I also find it odd that you would likely describe all that as anti-social.

... having preferences for the kind of people you enjoy socializing with... is not anti social. You seem to be functionally saying that not starting a massive marketing drive, that in itself is anti social.

This to me is either completely insane, or you don't understand what 'anti-social' means.

The corporate paradigm for social media... that is anti-social. 'Demonstrates a chronic pattern of disregarding the rights and well-bring of others.' They literally act as fine-tuned personalized, digital drugs to manipulate your thoughts and emotions, by exploiting your weaknesses.

  • One way or another, they just can't help but to cut you down and fit you into one of their simple little boxes they understand.

  • Who... how could... what?

    ... ah.

"Parents have been concerned about this potential circumcision-autism connection, but hopefully these findings may help allay their fears," says senior author Monica McGrath, research professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology...

    Ah ok I understand now.

    "Parents".

Bigotry against autists is so extreme that idiot religious extremists will actually consider one of their more barbaric, senseless, cherished traditions as negotiable, relative to the utter 'horror' of their children potentially being autistic.

  • See, you hypetrain the hypetrain now.

    12 dimensional marketing.

  • This might sound stupid, but basically, go to St Denis in RDR2.

Just... walk around, like a yokel, like a jay, lol.

That, then imagine cars as basically horseless buggies, at basically the same speeds as horses or horse drawn buggies.

Everyone either instinctively slows down, or is mandated to, because people are assumed to be able to amble and meander across the street.

Anyone moving faster than approximately 15mph is basicslly just assumed to be either a criminal or in some kind of emergency.

Its also kind of like boats in a marina... you slow to speeds such that you do not produce a wake.

Having high speed thoroughfares going straight through a downtown is literally insane, stroads are a diabolical abomination, as is the entirety of low density design that places the car as primary, above the human.

What is it, hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, or another of douglas adam's stories, where alien observers assume automobiles are the dominant form of life on the planet, that humans are just odd parasites that simply tend to enter and exit from them at times?

At this point, I would genuinely prefer the literal horseshit of horses in cities, over the much, much grander scale of horseshit imposed on us by car centric paradigms for personal transport.

  • Hah, yeah that probably is a better translation than 'idiot-walking', 'jackass-walking'.

  • Ah, wonderful, hadn't heard of that, but that is entirely believable.

  • ... what are you talking about?

Windscribe does have a free option.

    ???

I have never given them any money or CC or bank info or anything, and use them semi-regularly.

Yep, they're 5 eyes, that's far from great.

But... they do have a free option.

  • 'Jay' was, back then, a word that roughly meant 'fool' 'idiot' 'knave' 'hill billy' 'loud mouth' ... something like that.

It literally means 'idiot walking' or 'walking like an idiot'.

They made cars, and decided to tell us we were (and are) all idiots for doing basically the most human thing there is, walking around an environment, as we have been, for literal 10s of thousands of years.

  • Now this is a political ad campaign.

    Bravo.

The current sitting President is a multiple convicted felon, for, you know, actual heinous crimes.

    That line has been crossed.

When tyranny becomes law, crime becomes a duty, a public service.

I can't say I know or agree with the entirety of this guy's politics and policies, but goddamn if this is not very clever free marketing for himself.

  • Just want to let everyone know the dipshit in the picture accidentally shot himself in the face while attempting to be 'security' for a drug deal in the 90s.

Also, he wears the eyepatch because he got tired of cleaning his glass eye, and the socket got badly infected.

Fuck Stewart Rhodes, right where you shouldn't.

  • Oh my bad i forgot to add masochist to my list

  • If you are still using Windows 11, for enterprise, and things like this surprise you... you are an idiot, and are bad at your job.

  • Again, this is literally one dimensional thinking.

Instead of imagining bad <-> good as... a number line, -10 to 10, or whatever...

Imagine bad as x, good as y, and an x y graph.

Some actions can cause some bad, much good.

Some actions can cause much bad, little good.

No bad, much good, or no good, much bad.

In the real world, which is quite complex, there are very rarely actions or situations that are purely good, or purely bad. More often, it is a mixture of both, and everyone has their own moral scales for judging the magnitude of 'bad' and 'good'... many likely have even more than just two dimensions to their 'moral model'.

This is part of why, in English, we have the phrase 'moral calculus'. The phrase itself implies that trying to 'compute' morality is not straightforward, it is complex, with different approaches to reaching a 'solution'.
