  • Honestly I personally, selfishly, hope Lemmy never gets anywhere near Facebook or Twitter huge.

    Most people are fucking boring idiot assholes, full of actually boring and stupid ideas and opinions they only think are clever or notable because them and their social circle are broadly ignorant and hypnotized by marketing.

    I prefer a smaller community where people at least tend toward not being idiots, and not being boring.

    You are right; most people do not care about things that they should, if they actually believed half the things they say they do. Most people are enormously massive hypocrites about most things, whether theyre aware of that or not.

    I am under no illusion that people, broadly, when freely handed the solution to a large chunk of their problems, will use it, if it means they suffer any kind of inconvenience whatsoever.

    I am under no illusion that most people want what they claim they want; they just want to be popular, or be where the most other people are.

    If Bluesky dies and the users go back to Twitter, they never believed in anything more than 'I want to be part of the herd.'

    What you identify as a lack of water, I see as a functioning primary filtration system that prevents microplastic infected water from coming in to the system.

    The corporate paradigm for social media... that is anti-social. 'Demonstrates a chronic pattern of disregarding the rights and well-bring of others.' They literally act as fine-tuned personalized, digital drugs to manipulate your thoughts and emotions, by exploiting your weaknesses.

    Everyone either instinctively slows down, or is mandated to, because people are assumed to be able to amble and meander across the street.

    Having high speed thoroughfares going straight through a downtown is literally insane, stroads are a diabolical abomination, as is the entirety of low density design that places the car as primary, above the human.

    What is it, hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, or another of douglas adam's stories, where alien observers assume automobiles are the dominant form of life on the planet, that humans are just odd parasites that simply tend to enter and exit from them at times?

    At this point, I would genuinely prefer the literal horseshit of horses in cities, over the much, much grander scale of horseshit imposed on us by car centric paradigms for personal transport.

    It literally means 'idiot walking' or 'walking like an idiot'.

    They made cars, and decided to tell us we were (and are) all idiots for doing basically the most human thing there is, walking around an environment, as we have been, for literal 10s of thousands of years.

    Imagine bad as x, good as y, and an x y graph.

    Some actions can cause some bad, much good.

    Some actions can cause much bad, little good.

    No bad, much good, or no good, much bad.

    In the real world, which is quite complex, there are very rarely actions or situations that are purely good, or purely bad. More often, it is a mixture of both, and everyone has their own moral scales for judging the magnitude of 'bad' and 'good'... many likely have even more than just two dimensions to their 'moral model'.

    This is part of why, in English, we have the phrase 'moral calculus'. The phrase itself implies that trying to 'compute' morality is not straightforward, it is complex, with different approaches to reaching a 'solution'.

    Steam is a functional monopoly, but... I'd argue it didn't get there by being underhanded, ratfucking competitors secretly or brazenly.

    It just is better. It offers far more things, to both consumers and developers/sellers.

    Think from an indie dev perspective. If your game is actually good? Finds a niche? You don't need marketing, basically. You don't need to budget that, Steam will do it for you. AAA gaming is basically like fucking movies at this point, sometjing like 1/3 the budget goes toward building the hype train, not the product.

    Attempts to outdo or directly compete with Steam have just actually been comically incompetent, from at least my own business analyst perspective.

    Yeah, it has contract terms it enforces on sellers, but imo, they're far less restrictive than say, platform/marketfront exclusivity, as had long been the norm in the video game industry.

    Room for improvement? Absolutely. Functionally gambling on in game items, children doing this, is a legitimate problem. Afaik the court case with NY is still ongoing, will be interested to see how that pans out.

    So, they had to distract him from making too many stupid decisions, fucking up workflows and procesesses. He's just an idiot, who's probably mildly aspy/autistic, and that got PR transformed into 'quirky genius'. But look into what happened at PayPal, or Tesla, anything. He's incompetent at anything other than corporate ratfuckery, he's never coded or designed anything novel or useful.

    This uh... was from Tesla, a decade ago. Now of course, its all sycophants.

    Compare that to Valve's odd, flat-ish hierarchy, 'just work on something cool and be useful' work culture.

    Gabe has been known to occasionally bring the hammer down, but the vast amount of Valve's style, intentionally created and maintained by Gabe is... hands off. Hire the actual best, they'll direct themselves, kind of thing.

    Ain't perfect, but... probably a lot less of an insane tyrannical bastard than Elon.
