Little bit of everything!

Avid Swiftie (come join us at !taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech )

Gaming (Mass Effect, Witcher, and too much Satisfactory)

Sci-fi

I live for 90s TV sitcoms

  • It is illegal to show anything like that while the car is in gear.

However, it's completely fine as soon as you turn it on, or are sitting parked, or in aux mode.

  • I'm forced to use it at work and my token usage is monitored. Here was yesterday:

Build things thing, but remember: DO NOT DO THE THING.

Sure thing! I'll build out and I will not do the thing

    WTF YOU DID THE THING

You're absolutely right, I did the thing even though you explicitly told me not to do the thing

I wonder if they will have metrics for how many times I've all caps sworn at it.

  • Tech companies "move fast and break things". Their answers would be "What standards, we're not in the movie industry, we're a 'tech' company"

  • We're what, 14 years past when they should have done that? Windows 8 introduced the new UI style, and then Windows 10 was their chance to cement it. You can't even blame compatibility, Microsoft's own controls were all behind the legacy UIs. You can tell they were pushed and rushed out the door when nothing was ready.

At this point their UI has been so hacked and slashed that the fact that it compiles is a shock to me.

  • Yeah they truly automated the best part of my role. Now it's monitoring Claude sessions and more meetings.

I'm planning an exit, can't be tomorrow or next year, but 5-10 years if this continues. I think they're going to see an exodus of senior talent over the next decade.

  • The FTC doing something good?

  • While true, if you've ever been in a bullshit marketing video you'll know that marketing is the stupidest team ever.

    Just pretend like you're working!

  • Yes and no.

Yes, in that it does and will affect you, and you do need to take an interest. You need to vote in every election you can, you need to stay involved, you need to make a stand. Without that we will lose everything we care about. Those in power have shown that they are happy to chip away at things, but as soon as any opposition is shown they start backing down.

No, in that your life is your own, and you can't let politics dictate your life. As someone with a ton of anxiety, I cannot read the news daily, I do not subscribe to the news communities, I have to stay away from it. I choose to live my life and make the most of it, living day to day. My family and friends are the most important to me, and I spend my time enjoying them. I came very close to crumpling into a deep depression due to the news, and then got help. It was a hard lesson in learning I cannot personally change everything, and I cannot hold myself responsible for everything that has happened.

Confused? Good. It's a personal journey, you have to pick and choose yourself, and draw your own lines and figure out where your responsibility is and when you've done your part. I stay educated, I know what's happening, I know who I'm voting for, I know when to stand up. That does not mean I need to stay glued to my computer and doomscroll. You'll have to draw your own line.

  • Just holding up images of memes outside

  • Yeah Lemmy is the last place before I just go hang out in parks and be outside

  • that's the civilized way

  • Yeah they claim it's safe because it's through their store, but isn't this a direct path to a supply chain attack? One app using electron has one bad npm dependency and it auto installs and updates on every machine? This seems like a security nightmare scenario.

Bu hey marketing gets to put their shit in front of everyone's eyes so who cares.

  • Yeah this was a significant non answer. "We want to sound like we're doing something without doing anything"

  • sadge

    Jump
  • Its one of those moments which just makes you really happy to be here

  • Yeah no shit. This was the plan all along. Big tech wanted to flood the market with too much talent so they could lower pay for engineers. This was always the plan.

They never gave two shits about women in coding, or inner city coding caml's. They wanted mass cheap labor.

The cherry on top is right as that labor was coming out they got a double whammy of AI too.

  • fair

  • They also park in bike lanes and pedestrian areas so I'm not holding my breath.

That being said, yeah I'm not surprised either. Riding the bus looking at drivers I'll say a solid, very solid 1/4 minimum are doing something with their phones.

  • Yeah, I'm hopeful that changes. I know big projects require stronger leadership, but watching the comments on things made me feel like smaller OSS devs were like me and felt discouraged from helping out.

  • I assume you were downvoted because someone didn't like hearing the truth.

As with any online service you are entrusting your safety to the owner of said service. Anything you put into Lemmy you should assume can be used in any way. Any assumption otherwise is simply carelessness.
