    But we're all better off properly legislating digital ownership rights, whether or not you personally pirate media.

    The problem is too many people just care about games and nothing else. Nothing that is done about just games can fix this, it's a bigger problem.

    Netflix made a doc called "The Family" about that group. They started in 1935 and are Christian extremists who want the apocalypse to happen while they're alive so they can be raptured instead of dying.

    Most people only know them from "the national prayer breakfast" something most of our politicians (regardless of party) attend and is treated like an official event and not pancakes with a death cult for our nations leaders.

  • By that logic piracy cannot cause damages above the retail value of a single copy regardless of how many times it was downloaded because ultimately they only stole 1 game.

    The problem is you think the logic is wrong and not the punishment for illegal downloading should be at absolute most, the cost of a personal copy. Even if you made the download 100 times for reinstalls.

    Which honestly, is how it works...

    The thing is people that don't seed are assholes, and for every person you seed to, you just distributed it to them. And if/when that can be quantified, that's when huge charges rack up.

    Like there was a porn company that seeded their own videos, logged IPs, and anyone they could identify was sued for distributing to every other person, regardless of if they could be identified. I think that shook out with greatly diminished charges, but I can't remember

    As far as how to fix that,change the laws so instead of user, it's percent of data. 100% seed ratio would mean you took a copy, and provided a copy. Which would make most piracy not worth the effort of rights holders to enforce. Although Felony theft limits can be as low as $200 in some states and under 1,000 but that being so low due to inflation is a totally different problem.

    If you buy a book from GoT, you own the physical pieces of paper the book is printed on, not the words. The reason it costs more than blank pages, is the words printed on there. But you don't "own" the words. Just the pages that have the word printed on.

    If you buy an electronic copy, you don't "own" anything except the rights to have a copy of that.

    Same for games.

    You don't "own" the game, you own the physical media the game is on. If there's no physical media, then there's nothing you own.

    The reason it's the same for games and books, is why it's the same for TV, music, and every other form of media.

  • You don't "own the game" on physical media either...

    You own the physical disc/cartridge, that contains the code to run the game. Not the code on the disc/cartridge. If you "owned" the code on a PS3 disc, that would mean it would be legal for you to make copies and distribute to others.

    People don't understand what the problem is, so they're complaining about the wrong thing.

    What we need, is the rights to the installation media. If a game is going to be removed from a store, consumers should have a period of time where they can get the installation media in a way they can archive.

    For games that use a companies servers, that's a different problem. Saying they need to port it to user servers is a big ask, so maybe something like a minimum support life? Like up front on the box (really, storefronts) "servers guaranteed till at least ____". Companies would have an incentive to extend that date, because the further out it is, the more likely for late adapters to pay more.

    And if a game does better than expected, there's nothing stopping them from adding more time. If a game has a countdown clock, people can't really act surprised.

    But that's the cost of "live service" multiplayer games where people playing the game costs resources for the company, even if that's just keeping servers up for people to play on. If people don't like it, there's games that use peer hosting, but that comes with its own issues.

    If enough people just buy peer hosted multiplayer games because those don't have enddates, then we'll start seeing improvements with it. And that's better for all of us, because that's the real solution for the industry.

  • A lot of neoliberals are suddenly going to start "supporting" what they used to call too extreme, but it's just because they're hoping to retain their seats and toss out enough breadcrumbs the movement doesn't have enough momentum for real change.

    Leave the current SC on the bench for 40 years and adding a couple to balance them out isn't the solution.

    We need a way to remove the rot, not just throw more apples on top of the rot.

  • I think the biggest use case of AI, is going to someday be purging internet content of AI slop.

    We're polluting the greatest repository of human knowledge every assembled, and at such speed that it outpaces what humans can do. They'll come a day whenits at least something historians will do. Take a slice of major so ial media, filter out everything from bots, see what the actual people of the time were thinking

  • There's less water, and more than half of that lesser amount of water goes to cows thru their feed. If the environment recovered, they could just fucking graze. Even filling the nice of the buffalo

    If we had more water retention, that would be a smaller percentage, and water would be flowing till the end. Increasing the less than 1%.

    The reason the West is so dry, was the intentional wipeout of native animals.

    The buffalo were wiped out first to remove the natives food source. Then beavers to hurt (mostly French) trappers.

    Without them, the plants failed.

    To fix it, honestly isnt hard:

    First stack rocks in dry creek beds, the flatter the ground the longer you can go between them. Water still flows thru the rocks, but it does it slower sinking into the ground where it gets retained.

    Doesn't take long for grasses and plants to start establishing on those banks. Then small herbivores eat them and poop it out, fertilizing the area around the creek, and dispersing seeds from elsewhere.

    The plants develop roots and suck water away from the creek bed, which now it can absorb more water.

    Before long that creek that's dry all but two weeks a year is now a permanent water, and where there's running water beavers show up. They instinctively add to the initial rocks, turning them into full fledged dams and creating rivers and wetlands.

    Add buffalo back on top of that once there's enough greenery, and they'll shit everywhere.

    Freshwater constantly falls from the sky, the main problem is we fucked up the environment so most of it ends up going straight out to sea and becoming saltwater again. To refill aquifiers we just need to slow that flow down.

    Legislating brand names is a waste of time, and I feel like Republicans are trying to get involved to "compromise" to keep something identical or even worse, just not called Flock.
