  • OK, this is a tough one and what I'm about to say might get me some dislikes. Let me just say something that might soften the blow: Fuck Rowling, her transphobia, and the bigots that defend her wretched views. Even if she decided, in an alternative timeline, to keep her loudmouth shut, she would still be the scum of the earth for her views on trans people. I repeat, Fuck Rowling.

    Now, with that out the way, let's address the crux of the issue. I know that many of you in the LGBTQ+ community grew up with the franchise and enjoyed it long before Rowling exposed her true colors. If you're LGBTQ+ and you decide to reconcile, in some way, with the franchise without directly supporting Rowling, you're well within your rights to do so. The nostalgia you feel for something that brought you joy in your youth is yours to keep. No one, not even the creator themselves, can take that from you. As for the products themselves? You can: buy the books secondhand, pirate the movies, pirate the EPUBs if you have an e reader and buy fan-made merch from LGBTQ+-friendly sellers.

    If decided to not reconcile with the franchise, you're also well within your rights to do so. Rowling has to made aware of the damage her views have on people. Demonstrate the hypocrisy of writing about a group of outsiders finding a place of acceptance and discovering their true selves and espousing bigoted rhetoric towards a discriminated group wanting acceptance for their true selves. There's plenty of other fictional universes you can draw your attention towards (more on that in a moment) that are far less problematic and worthier of your time.

    If you're an ally (like myself), it's best that we don't engage with the franchise all together out of support. For me, this isn't a problem since I didn't engage with the franchise all that much in my youth (I was more of a LOTR fan). If you do decide to reconcile, much of what I have already said still applies.

    In short, the question of reconciliation is a personal matter. So long as Rowling isn't benefiting, you should be happy with your decision and the stand you take. As for alternatives? Well...

  • Fires that entrap passengers are a well-documented and recurring problem with every model in Tesla’s lineup of vehicles, but Cybertrucks appear to have a disproportionate number of known deaths. Safety experts have told the Guardian that the truck’s unique design amplifies the deadly issue. The vehicles come with high-density laminated windows that are harder to break than regular car windows, making escape and rescue difficult when doors won’t unlock. And the trucks are built with materials not commonly used in the industry, like stainless steel, which can complicate the work of emergency responders. The Cybertruck is also the first Tesla model to entirely eliminate door handles on the outside of the vehicle.

    First, "unique" design? It's an ugly callback to the wedge-shaped cars of the 80s. It looks like a DeLorean model that refused to render properly, and the dev just went with it.

    Second, the decision to exclude door handles is fucking mental. It's a mundane feature that cars have had since the Model T. If they wanted to make a pickup, its handles should resemble those found on a typical pickup. If it's "aesthetics" they're after (which shouldn't matter when it comes to a pickup), some of the best looking cars have had no problem including door handles into its design.

  • Speaking as a cishet man, the only time any two people can have unprotected sex is when both parties know the STD status of each other. He has to understand that IUDs are for pregnancy prevention, not STD prevention. If you wish to continue with this guy and at some point you want to start having unprotected sex with him, go get STD tested together. In the meantime, he has to wear the condom. If that bothers him, dump him. Don't put your body and your life at risk.

    I forget what state this was in but they allowed pork farmers to dump pig effluent into the local rivers. This killed many fish and local wildlife. Why a state's local EPA chapter would allow such blatant environmental hazards to happen is beyond me.

  • A friendly reminder that just because a fascist and a Nazi has a disdain for Israel, they're still NOT allies. They're still a fascist/Nazi, they're not to be trusted and/or praised. The left, be they Libertarian Socialists, Marxist-Leninists, Maoists or Anarchists, support the Palestinian cause as it mirrors so many oppressors vs. oppressed dynamics throughout history. Muslims feel obligated to support their fellow Muslims in despair.

    Fascists/Nazis oppose Israel out of their irrational hatred of Jews. There's no separation of the State of Israel and the global Jewish community; they're one and the same to them. They erroneously believe that they and Palestinian Arabs share a common enemy when, in fact, Palestine's struggle is against colonists oppression. Hamas and Hezbollah may spout antisemitic views but this an extension of their radical Islamism. If Fascists/Nazi had their way, Jews, Arabs and all other non-whites would share the gas chambers. They boast about bogus but widely believed antisemitic conspiracies: Rothschilds, George Soros, ZOG, Cultural Marxism, Great Replacement, so on and so forth. The Rothschilds and Soros are, indeed, pieces of shits but, once again, fascists/Nazis hyperfixate on their Jewishness.

    The media will portray the global solidarity movement as in league with fascists and Nazis. We must make clear that fascists and Nazis are not welcomed. That is why it's important that we, under no circumstance whatsoever, make alliances with fascists/Nazis.
