  • AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake)

It's the story of Metroid 2, told in the style of Super Metroid. It adds a bunch of quality of life features and also adds new content that fits the world.

If you like 2D Metroid, you'll love this game.

The added Thermal Power Plant escape sequence was amazing.

You fight your way in, standard area. You fight a boss, who after being defeated begins a power plant overload.

Now you have a classic escape sequence. What you don't know is that the timer (overload meter) is not actually a timer, it moves up based on your progress. When you dug into the plant there were a number of slow moments, so now you have to slowly go through them in reverse. Finally you reach the top, the airlock. The slowest moving doors in the world. KABOOM!

You think you've failed. But Samus lives. You have 1 HP and have to limp two screens over to the healing room.

It's a cinematic moment in a video game. I'll never forget it.

  • For the baby scene it was pointed out that the guard who takes it away was Criston Cole. I don't know how much Helena knows about Criston, but I assume she knows he's very loyal to Alicent, so that tracks.

If the throne needs to be destroyed, and she saw a confident woman on a dragon, do you think that might have been Dany? Or maybe her interpretation would be Rhynera?

So if she can't avoid her fate, or if she knows she has a role to play, it sounds like she's going to have to take a more active role. I can't think of what that something should be, but if she's having dreams maybe whatever it is will play a big role in the last season.

  • Looking forward to the Alt Shift X breakdown.

  • Robert killed Rhaegar because he was distracted by his visions.

Honestly that's hilarious. I love the idea that Rhaegar sees the battle before him, sees how the battle is going to go, and begins to mimic it... only to be smacked down by BOBBY B.

Both Rhaegar and Lyanna have prophetic visions about the Song of Ice and Fire. They share a vision of Daenerys and her dragons.

Have Targaryen's shared dreams/visions before? Have non Targs, other than Bran, had visions?

Also interesting that they see Daenerys and not Jon.

  • I hated everything about the other dragons fighting Sheepstealer. I thought Syrax was going to die. I thought Sheepstealer was going to die. I thought Caraxes was going to die. Stop fighting!

On the flip side, Sunfyre lives! What a moment. I love rooting for Aegon who is a complete bastard of a man.

Aemond + Alicent was fucked up, I'm glad it was really Alys. But predictably Aemond is an idiot.

Speaking of predictable, Ulf has surprisingly betrayed Rhaenyra. He's going to cause so many problems next episode. Plus if Hugh is stuck in the city, his dragon will probably try to save him and cause even more mess. Or maybe he'll just do something stupid to protect his wife.

Also speculation about Helena's dreams. She gave birth and her child is taken away. Helena rides Dreamfyre and burns some people. Helena lives happily ever after... until snow.

Working backwards the snow is reality, so everything before it was probably a lie. So Helena's story will end horribly (not surprising given the show). She was commanding of her dragon... So the opposite may be some dragon accident? Fire breathing everywhere wildly? And the baby being taken away, means the baby being stillborn?

  • The Thing should be fine.

  • Aegon makes sense, everyone wants to be the next Conqueror.

But Daeron is surprising. Although given how confusing all the different names already are it's probably for the best they don't reuse them too often.

  • So I don't think I've missed it.

    As you said,

Their thought process is that if Massie wins/is appointed, then it will give him an "incumbent" advantage in the midterms

But I don't believe Massie can run in the midterms.

I admit I am wrong that he can't be the incumbent, because technically being the incumbent just implies holding the office, not running for the office they currently hold, but in a world where a special election happens (or an appointment), and Massie takes McConnell's Senate seat, he can not run in the midterm election.

Per Ballotpedia the deadline to file as a unaffiliated (independent) was in June.

Any special election would only cover the remainder of McConnell's term and not the term after, which is a whole separate election that is happening in November.

My guess, after reading more about it, would be that a special election could include the two current midterm candidates AND Massie (as an independent), and that election could result in a Democrat winning. Then because the Democrats "just won" it would lower Republican voter turnout in the midterms. (Although I suspect in this scenario the midterm and special election would both take place in November, so it wouldn't be two separate elections, but Massie would get more air time to ensure the Republican doesn't win.)

  • She's just a hobbit who stole the ring.

    A lady Bilbo.

  • I guess it's not nothing, but it also removes a vote from the US House.

I'm also not sure that in this hypothetical scenario Massie would be seated before the November election.

    Per this article,

Beshear would have 30 days to call an election, and prospective candidates would then have 49 days to consider running and file.

Let's assume Beshear calls for a special election on August 2nd, a day before the deadline. Plus 49 days brings you to September 20th, but that's not when the election is held, that's just when everyone must declare by.

Is there anything that clarifies that timeline?

And of course secondary to that, would the people of Kentucky vote for the independent Massie who can at best serve for a few months, or would you "double" vote for the person running in the standard election so they can start working immediately.

To be very clear, McConnell is a piece of shit, he's probably dead or at the very least incapable of performing his duties and should be replaced. But I just don't see a scenario where Massie actually is able to do anything.

  • He can't be the incumbent.

The race for McConnell's seat is already underway and the Republican nominee already picked. Additionally all other deadlines to run as an Independent have passed.

  • I mean nowadays you carry a computer on your person constantly. Your hands are touching a computer, your eyes are looking at a computer.

Computer glasses are seen as the next step.

I'm not confident it actually is, but I understand the why it's being tried.

  • So I've heard this said before, but I don't really get it.

Massie is a current Kentucky House representative, he lost his primary so his term will end in January.

McConnell's seat is up for election in November, so his term also ends in January.

If a special election is held, it's just to fill out his term until the end of January.

So in a scenario where a special election is held and Massie wins, he has to resign his House seat to take the Senate seat, but the term still ends in January.

    Does that really change anything?

  • Also Ormund and the Hightowers are supposedly "trapped" in Tumbletown, but Ulf is in King's Landing and Hugh is in Tumbletown. I don't think Ormund has plans on leaving, but he's not really trapped.

Ulf and Hugh just had their "is life better?" discussion. Ulf seems easy to turn. Hugh's weakness is his wife who just rejected him. Hugh has generally seemed level headed, but he was pretty aggressive when trying to get his wife to leave.

  • RIP Criston Cole. It's fitting that we see him die, and fairly unceremoniously, but other characters are still talking about him. Just what he always wanted.

Also my immediate reaction was RIP Corlys, but after thinking about it, probably just captured? Criston was clear, so Corlys being unclear means he's just captured. Probably.

Gwayne being real with Daeron about Ormund was great to see. Daeron has at least someone good (or at least better than Ormund) looking after him.

Helena and Alicent seeing each other again seems doomed. That was definitely a "we're never seeing each other again" conversation.

Plus Rhynera seemed a little too into Helena having dreams. If Alicent is gone and she's looking after her... Things could get ugly.

  • So one the arguments around drugs like marijuana is that "under the influence" is difficult to detect and test.

For alcohol we have BAC or Blood Alcohol Content. It's far from a perfect measurement, but it is measurable and we have laws that define "too much". It's also relatively simple to measure.

We don't have a way to simply measure Blood Marijuana Content or any similar measurement. Even if we can measure it, what is "too much" is also not well defined.

Which I largely mention because "similar to alcohol", while I agree, is easier said than done.

  • is it all posturing

we still value our physical culture. Rather than completely abandoning that, we are currently challenging ourselves to shift towards being able to think about and act on the important aspects of digital in parallel.

Yeah. They are challenging themselves to think about the shift.

It Sony doesn't make disks or the PSwhatever doesn't have a disk drive... Not much to think about.

It's a good message, but just a message.

  • The timing of AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) was unfortunate. Nintendo pretty much ignored the Metroid franchise, but they had done a remake of the first Metroid game "recently".

AM2R came out right around the time Nintendo was announcing their own Metroid 2 remake, and a solid one at that. (That same developer would next make Metroid Dread, which is excellent.)

Regardless Nintendo was going to takedown AM2R eventually, but they were particularly aggressive because they were also remaking Metroid 2.

But both games are excellent. You should play AM2R.

  • It's not one-to-one but Pokopia exists and sold extremely well.

  • I wouldn't blame you if you did. In theory this community is more book focused, but I figure there are only like 6 people actively commenting, so I trust people to spoiler things if it wasn't in the show.

If we had more people separate threads make sense. Maybe someday.
