  • AI detection software is just another AI. At best, it's in an arms race that has a ceiling on what is detectable (though debatable if LLMs can reach that ceiling), at worst it outputs slop just like the LLMs it "detects".

  • The person with this specific complaint didn't make this comic, they just replaced the text in the 3rd panel.

  • I mean, I'm nowhere near his age but have been losing words on the tip of my tongue since I was nowhere near my current age, so I'm not sure it's the best indicator.

  • Oh right, it's logarithmic, so that wiggle area is much bigger than it would be on a similar linear graph. I also forgot about the sun swallowing the earth, which would prevent Greenland from getting into another order of magnitude, though there is always the possibility that earth will get flung either to a higher orbit or out of the solar system entirely before the sun swallows it and Greenland will last for trillions of years.

  • I believe it is an attempt to use an argument that they will care about. You could write a brilliant piece about how that many bots hurt culture and society but if the ones you want to convince don't gaf about either of those, they probably won't even read what you have to say, let alone change anything because of it.

    Or, more likely, they won't even see anything here, at which point that comment becomes more of a "they aren't even very good at what they want to be good at".

    Like from my pov, the top of the corporate world doesn't just not care about those things but is actively trying to destroy them because they think they'll do better in a world where none of those things are as they currently are.

  • Electric elements are actually pretty efficient. Usually the heat generated by an electric current is the inefficiency (as well as sound, radiation, and vibrations), but for a heating element you're using that heat waste. It still can generate sound, radiation, and vibrations, so it's not 100% efficient, but you can do well just sticking an element in the middle of the thing you want to heat, especially if it's a fluid. If you don't stick it in the middle, then you lose heat in all the directions away from the thing you're trying to heat.

    Heat pipes are more efficient because the heat isn't being generated but just moved. Natural gas (or fossil fuels) seems more efficient but is actually just cheaper, as it used energy that was stored a long time ago.

    Even induction burners still lose heat from the bottom of the pot into the induction burner itself, hence why they usually have cooling fans. And the reason why they are more efficient than radiative heat or those spiral elements is because they create the heat closer to the food using an electric current in the bottom of the pot/pan itself, though even the induction part has additional losses.

  • My guess is you're getting contamination from something else. All a microwave does is emits microwave radiation inside the faraday cage that is made from the microwave's frame/cover, and as the microwaves pass through, they flip di-polar molecules (molecules that have one side slightly more positively charged and the other slightly more negatively charged), which creates friction and heat. Water is one such molecule.

    One reason some people don't like to use it to cook have to do with how it affects the texture. Microwaves heat food up from anywhere the waves spin water, whereas most other cooking methods involve heating it from the outside, so water is evapourating more there, plus you can get some oxidization to add a brittle crunchy layer.

    It can also damage other molecules and affect their structural integrity in ways different from other forms of cooking.

    It can occasionally do this thing where it heats the water past the point of boiling but without boiling the water (superheating). Not sure if that affects cooking as much, as it usually requires pretty pure water and is more a safety concern because that water will explode when it realizes that it should actually have changed into a gas already (which usually happens because you bumped it while picking up the container it's in).

    And that container is the last part. You don't usually cook with plastic containers because they melt in the high heat used for cooking, but they seem fine in a microwave. But who knows what's happening at a micro level. A metallic taste is probably something other than plastic, but my guess is that it's coming from whatever container you were using, especially if you're microwaving something in a metal container of some sort. That would form current eddies that can arc, but if the surface is smooth enough it won't necessarily spark visibly, but could be breaking particles off into your water that you then taste.

  • Lifespan is in seconds, not years. Greenland is old.

    For all complex life and most of simple life, Greenland was there. It was in different places and depths, but those rocks were there for most of the time. There's only a few other places on the planet that rival Greenland's age (or more specifically, certain rock formations in Greenland, though they make up a significant portion of it).

    Though one thing about "lifespan" is that it's intended to be "age at death", not "current age", so I'd call that an inaccuracy, as Greenland will probably continue to exist for billions more years (though when the glacial lakes eventually form and break free, there will be a lot of sudden erosion).

    Makes me curious what the future lifespan will be for the various continents. I wish our own lifespans were more geologically significant. Though at least I got to see the time since dinosaurs tick from 65 million years ago to 66 million years ago.

  • None of his actions worked against the sith plot either. Remember that they weren't on the side of the droid army, that was just a bad guy whose presence allowed them to manipulate the senate and jedi and set them up for their takeover/downfall. The first thing Palatine does after he's won is orders Anakin to cut off the head of that bad guy, now that they were no longer needed.

    And even though it appeared that the good guys won episode 1, in hindsight I'd call it almost a complete victory for the sith. Palpatine was chancellor, Qui Gon (who might have had the wisdom to help Anakin avoid the dark side) was dead, Anakin (who Palpatine and Plagius caused to come into existence with some force fuckery 8 years prior to ep 1) was in the jedi and was already contentious and being trained by a jedi who was not equipped to handle someone as tempermental as Anakin, and the trade federation was on the radar as a threat to the Republic. The only loss to them was their enforcer, Maul.

    The outcome of the battle for Naboo didn't matter to them. Though it was also Anakin that won that battle, despite Jar Jar's chaotic effectiveness for their side. Without Anakin's surprise victory, they didn't really have a path to victory and IIRC they were pretty much surrendering when the droids suddenly went dead, so it wasn't like Jar Jar was even winning the conflict for them.

  • Oh, how long until an AI ends up swatting people. There will probably even be different categories:

    1. Legit swat scenario, wrong address (or otherwise incorrect details make it turn tragic)
    2. Caller deliberately trying to swat innocent victim, AI goes along with it and adds credibility (not that humans seem to take away much credibility, so maybe this one shouldn't really be a black mark for AIs if it does happen)
    3. AI just misinterprets a caller's description, deploys swat team
    4. AI doesn't trust the caller's description, deploys swat team (anyone ever seen an agent start suspecting they were in an adversarial situation where something was injecting things into the context? I have)
    5. AI uses dispatching tool incorrectly, accidentally deploys swat team
  • Though once you have been driving your manual for a while, you can get a feel for the speed from the engine sound and knowing what gear it's in. Or even from the throttle level equilibrium is at and how much of an incline you're driving on at that equilibrium. And probably also from just getting used to how fast things come at you at various speeds.

    Not that I'd give up the speedo but checking it is more of a confirmation thing than a real lookup.

  • While we're talking about glasses technology, it seems like oil resistant coatings have finally gotten really good. My eyebrows are pretty oily and would smear on the top middle corners of my glasses all the time. But my latest pair just has a tiny bit of smudging there. I can press them against my face and wiggle my eyebrows right against them and it's still only a bit smudged.

  • It's not just money but also expertise required to build, run, and maintain the fabs, which are each different specialized skills (or more accurately an umbrella of different specialized skills). While these people certainly exist, I don't think there's a large pool of them waiting to get hired. And with memory production being so concentrated in Taiwan and South Korea, it will be difficult to poach workers because (as I understand) both cultures are big on loyalty to the nation.

    That's not to say I disagree that anyone else should try to get into the memory fab game (or chip fab in general) as I think the market needs more players, but it's easier said than done, even if you have a ton of money to throw at the problem. Look at Intel, they struggled on the fab side and already had fabs going as a leading chip producer. Or AMD, who sold their fabs because they were struggling to keep them profitable.

    Though I also think that governments would be smart to subsidize (or outright socialize) chip fabs, as depending on others to make these is giving up on a lot of economic power (which can affect military power, so spreading chip production out more could increase world stability).

  • It will always be an arms race. If someone develops a new style that doesn't look like AI, then it's only a matter of time before an AI model can generate that style.

    And the future I see for this arms race is eventually it will be better than humans at producing art that doesn't look like AI.

    I'm at the point where I think AI generated shit should be judged on its own merit rather than for whether or not it's AI because eventually we won't be able to tell from other factors and any attempts will end up hurting humans more than the AIs (because they have no feelings to be hurt and will just continue while some portion of the humans will get discouraged and stop bothering to try).

    Plus, at least with programming, saying code sucks because it's AI generated is weak. If a code submission is shit, there will be technical reasons that it is shit that have nothing to do with who (or what) wrote it.

    I caught a moth that got in to my place with a small peanut can as it flew this year, one of my best bug captures.

  • Which puts even more of a burden on artists. This is the big irony of the whole movement to oppose AI and support artists is that, at least for this strain of it, more burden is placed on the artists to prove that they aren't just using AI than on the AI ones themselves. They just generate whatever images and post them or use them. I wouldn't be surprised if there's already generators that can generate wireframes or whatever "intermediate" step can serve as "proof" it wasn't generated by AI. I can't think of a single piece of evidence that couldn't theoretically also be generated. Models today might require generating 1000 images and diacarding 950 of them but the ones who don't care about how artists are affected probably also don't care about how much energy it takes. But even if today's models can't do that, I believe others will be able to sometime soon.

    The people putting out AI art just see "that's AI" as "need to get better at using AI" not "need to stop using AI". Maybe some would care, but as someone who generally doesn't gaf about what people think about my opinions, I know I wouldn't. But if I was an artist just wanting to share my art, I'd be more likely to just stop sharing it than jump through whatever hoops you want to prove I'm not guilty.
