  • And the whole "try but back down if it isn't going so well" strategy is the worst part of it all because it helps them without even if a judge would laugh them out of court over it because of the set of people that would back down or be happy with a lesser settlement, which is probably larger than the set of people that would fight it anyways, plus there's the subset of people that would want to fight anyways but don't have the resources to do so.

    That's why I hate the whole system of "treat it as if it is all good until someone (who was specifically harmed by this) takes it to court". And that's even before getting to the part where the decision in the end rests in the hands of a single or maybe a small group of judges.

  • I still can't figure out if Tommy is being laughed at or with regarding that movie. It's so entertainingly bad, but he made a series (whose name escapes me) after that that managed to also be entertainingly bad. I can't tell if his taste is accidentally hilarious or if he figured out how to bottle lightning and can just make hilariously bad media on a whim.

    It's hard to walk that line without drifting into satire territory, becomming a self-parody, or going too far the other way from hilariously bad to just bad.

    I lean more towards him doing it deliberately from the start because he pivoted so easily to the comedy series. I suspect he would have had a meltdown about the public reception if his personality was really like the Tommy Wiseau character he plays.

    Though I am pretty sure that a significant part of his motivation was to have sex with (or at least a sex scene with, no idea if they actually did it like in a porno or just simulated it like on most movies) Gabrielle from Xena.

  • Another suggestion is to have multiple lights and rotate them as you charge them. Freshest charge in emergency bag, then the one previously in the bag is for day to day use until it dies and needs charging. Though this is mainly a concern if you rarely use it. If you're frequently stopping to help people, you might not need to do special battery management beyond just charging when it gets low.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but car adapter to USB charger can also help here (and in many other cases... My daughter isn't SOL when her DS dies because I got a USB charging cable for it).

    Similar (to the first paragraph) for jump starter kits. The first time I needed mine after getting it, it was winter and the battery was dead and wouldn't even charge until it had warmed up. I leave mine in the car during the summer but leave it inside by the door in the winter now.

At least a headlight, though I'd also consider hanging lights that could hang from the bottom of your hood and/or a light that can be positioned to stand somewhere and shine where you need it. Sure you might have your phone on you but you might need to use both hands for things other than holding lights.

    Also, if you have someone wanting to help but doing more to get in the way, you can delegate them to "hold the light" to hopefully redirect them out of the way. Just use the headlamp if they are bad at aiming the light.

  • Yeah, a lot of these fingerprinting capabilities seem like things that should be behind permission requests, if not outright disabled entirely.

    Like ok, I get that if someone wanted to make a browser-based audio editing tool, it might be useful for javascript to be able to sample the output side after effects have been applied. But I don't want every single fucking website to have that capability by default. I'm not even sure I want websites to be able to play audio at all without permission.

    By default, it should be a one way pipeline. Whatever they put into the pipeline gets displayed or played but they can't see any of the system-specific results. I'd prefer the standard be designing pages to work with any resolution instead of letting them query the exact pixel dimensions, which varies per device and I suspect fingerprinting was the reason they were designed like that in the first place.

  • There should be standard TOS clauses that are approved based on their legality and enforceability that click or use based "contracts" should be limited to. Or at the very least, they should need to be legally ratified rather than only looked at closely if legally challenged.

    Like that whole "you waived our liability for real world shit by using Disney+" should have resulted in the disbarment of any lawyers that wrote, approved, and tried to argue it in court when it came up and punitive damages to Disney for even trying.

  • Then you try to reset but any time you try to say the line, someone laughs and gets everyone else going. Even if 9/10 people manage to hold it together, that 10th person giggling sets everyone else off. And then one of the guys might lose his boner and you need to do some more foreplay to get everyone going again to reset. Can turn what should have been just a quick 2h session into a multi-day experience.

    Not that I'm complaining or anything.

  • Everyone? The group of people that includes those who can't use their computer after their desktop icons get sorted?

    It still takes some skills, but those skills might just be "desoldering chips to stick them in a chip reader device" and doing that on the storage chips. Or maybe tapping a trace to read the signals that are sent over it to grab a key or something. "Not hard" doesn't mean "you don't need skill to do it", it means "someone who has some skills won't have difficulty applying them".

  • I don't get why people use that one version of solar where essentially the power company gets most of the benefit because they buy the generated power from you at wholesale and sell it by to you at retail and, as you said, you can't even use it when the power goes out.

    Though do you know if there's automated systems that take both solar/battery and the grid as input and do load balancing such that it automatically uses the cheaper power when available and then falls back to the grid for whatever else it needs? Or even better, one that keeps a certain amount of battery power as backup in case the grid goes down?

    Though what I'd really like to see are DC home circuits to avoid the energy loss from first converting DC to AC to match the grid, then converting it back to DC inside the power blocks of your device.

  • Not doubting what you're saying but just a bit confused because wouldn't electrifying what a lineman works on end up overloading the generator because you're now powering everything up to where the circuit broke upstream? Saying this based on an assumption that the lines service multple households and the generators are designed to keep important things running rather than just replace power plants for even one house, let alone the neighbourhood.
