  • A lot of the time when any justification is added for the accusation, it's based on the weakest evidence or logic, like typos when LLMs are generally pretty good at following grammar and spelling rules, as much as they suck at pretty much everything else (or even where they can do well, they still suck because they are unreliable).

  • To anyone who finds it necessary to "call out" stuff for being either fake or AI generated when there are no stakes, why are you like that? When you're wrong, you're at least as big of an asshole as anyone actually putting out AI generated art as if they made it. Probably more of an asshole because you're specifically targeting an artist's work while those posting AI art as if they made it aren't trying to bring anyone down like you are.

  • Something I noticed recently about languages is that there's three main sets of "settings": the alphabet (or how letters map to sounds), the vocabulary (how to string letters together to form words that map to meanings), and grammar (how to legally combine words to express thoughts).

    An interesting part about the alphabet is that there's two angles to it: the writing part and the spoken part. Many languages share most of the writing part with english (eg french, spanish, german) but sharing the spoken part is rarer. In fact, different regions that speak the same language can use different letter sounds. That's what an accent is, or at least a big part of it (cadence and emphasis can also make the same language sound different).

    Anyways, this felt profound to me when I realized it but now I'm curious if this was obvious to people more inclined to the language side of learning for why people have accents.

  • Short answer: Contempt. I feel nothing but contempt for Apple and its products. They aren't evil but they also aren't good (not the opposite of evil but in the "I think this is worth using" sense).

    Long answer: Apple earned their place in my mental category of "polished turd" decades ago with their single button mice and their tendency to pick form over function. Those colourful iMacs back around 2000 were easily the worst computers I've ever used, between the mouse that was perfectly round (so you couldn't tell its rotation without looking at it or at least feeling for the wire), the slowness (simple assignments took forever), and instability (I just avoided using them at all after the nth assignment was lost after an hour of work).

    And then they added "trendy walled garden" with the iPhone and serve as a reminder of how many people fall for marketing bullshit with how many people seem to prefer the shittier locked down option while also acting smug about it.

    So personally, Mac was labelled irrelevant back during the Win vs Mac wars, before MS really embraced the enshitification and thought they had to make something people wanted to use to sell it rather than do whatever and most people go along because inertia. And now that MS has embraced the enshitification, my own mental model for them is basically "just like Mac except Mac seems like they are trying to be good but just have a very different idea of what 'good' is, while MS isn't even trying to be good and pursue other means of revenue".

  • Humans don't work like that. Geographically, some trends finish in the area they started before they even reach other areas, though the internet has reduced the time lag. But there will be people who get into it before it's a trend, people that get into it because it's a trend, and people who continue to repeat it after it's a trend because they either like it or miss the time when it was a trend. It only dies off as those that hold on to it die off.

    So 6-7 will be with us for a long time, though it's frequency of use could be on a downward trend.

  • Some more context, it's not that they just highlighted the wrong countries, the highlighted blobs aren't even countries.

    Partial marks for Uganda being in the correct area, though the shape only vaguely resmbles the country.

    The Nigeria one overlaps Nigeria a bit, though is mostly over Niger.

    The westernmost one (whose label points at Namibia on the map instead of one of the text labels) does overlap Ivory Coast but mostly covers Ghana and Togo, along with a little of Benin and Nigeria.

    The one labeled Ivory Coast covers some of Malawi, as well as Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

    The one labeled Malawi covers parts of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa.

    The one labeled Mozambique is mostly within Ethiopia, though it looks like it dips down into Kenya as well.

    Though maybe this is a map that wasn't intended to show countries but the person that changed the slide didn't know any African geography so couldn't tell.
