  • No, its not true.

The question you are asking ins a personality thing. Most folks work to live.

It's just the ones who are really loud are the workaholics.

  • Sometimes I find the level of bitterness on fediverse to be chilling... like holy shit some posters on here are legit wannabe murderers. And it seriously makes me question what I'm doing here.

I miss the internet being a more chill/nerdy space, but those days are long gone.

  • do you not interact with people or something? completely serious.

99.9% of people want to feel their feelings and if you try to tell them they are wrong they will tell you to go fuck yourself.

  • IG algo thinks I'm a 60+ divorced latina woman.

  • the states/cities with the highest costs typically score the highest on 'quality of life' indexes, and the poorest, the worst.

it's really a matter of money, and if you have enough to sustain the cost of living in a higher cost area that affords a higher quality of life.

  • pointing out facts makes you an asshole.

    people want feelings, not facts.

  • emotion.

they feel like they are making the world a better place by doing so

  • Basically insulting me or telling me how stupid and wrong I am because I am... not them and don't share their opinion.

A lot of people lack the imagination to understand other people are not them and that's... OK. Same folks who love to tell you how if you don't agree with them or feel bad for their 'suffering' you 'lack empathy' or 'need therapy.'

I just find the amount of entitlement... in most internet users and also IRL to be baffling compared to like 10-20 years ago. I missed this memo in life where other people owe me and must agree with me or they are wrong and bad and should be insulted and harassed. But it seems to be the default mode of a huge chuck of the population these days.

  • you mean they are totally normal human beings? yes, they are very very normal.

  • according to the rest of entire family I've done shit with my life because I'm not a multi-millionaire.

  • what if the wrong you did them was completely fictional and a fantasy in their head?

  • oh everyday i have to be on guard some nutcase will come up to me and try to start a fight with me because of my dog, my hat, my shirt, a book i might have on me etc. mostly verbal, but a few times they straight up threw a punch or tried to kick me. around '22 this started happening to me about once every 2-3 months.

nobody ever did any of this to me until the past 3-4 years, post pandemic craziness. it's not homeless people, it's usually yuppies or trust fund baby types who hate me because I look 'weird' because I'm not wearing designer clothes like them. it's weird and it's always that type of person, it's never like a normal unassuming looking person, it's someone who has a 'identity' to broadcast and seems to think I'm threatening them by existing in the same space as them, like apparently me waiting for a coffee or a take out on the sidewalk 'offends' them.

funny thing is stuff like this also happened to me in college, from the same type of people. i would be like chilling on a bench reading a book and campus security would come up and said i was reported for threatening people and making them uncomfortable and i'd be like 'what people' and there would be nobody around and they'd just be walk off because well, it was some idiot who felt 'attacked' by me minding my own business.

  • my dad basically told me how disappointed he was in me when he died.

because i didn't play high school football.

    i was 30.

he was a weird bitter dude, really hung up on sports and a lot of trivial nonsense. only thing he ever seemed to enjoy in life was cruises and gambling.

  • it just gets overwhelming when every single day you have to block block block.

like so many things are flooded in my feed when i want to discover new stuff, but i don't care about how aggreieved linux using trans furries are about something trump did, but that's so much of what is 'popular' on fedi. a extremist minority who have way too much influence and airtime. i care about a lot of those things, but i don't want to be around folks whose purpose in life is being aggreived because of 'who they are' when 'who they are' is a operating system.

  • could be worse, you could live in a place where people are like that in person.

  • 'mark all read'.

    i have that, you don't?

  • amen brother.

don't worry, those folks will invade your specailized subgroups to whine about their lives and billionaires, but at least if you mod you can ban them.

also, if you are moderately happy with your life, apparently you're a facist capitalist pig dog who is personally preventing another anonymous stranger on the internet from being happy...

  • it's only enjoyable because my block list is massive and i completely block 4 instances now. fedi has a large concentration of bad faith people concentrated in few spaces.

there are still some really good threads and interesting commentary, but it's really hard to find it because 95% of the content here is people being angry and ragebaiting over politics like all the time.

this place really needs more niche hobbies communities that aren't loaded with bitter political people who need to politicize everything into a conspiracy trying to rob them of all their joy in life... but chances of that are low. the most embittered insane people are the most prolific by far.

I'm alreay getting nostalgic for fedi of like 2-3 years ago which was far more optimistic and the commentary was generally less bitter and nasty and cruel. i miss the optimisim of kbin and the early fedi projects, many of which are died, and it seems the new ones are ever more hellbent on control of the users, just like reddit became.

  • any reason you want.

it doesn't have to be so extreme. lots of time it's just getting older and making different life choices/interests.

i lost most older friends the past few years because they decided to go off the deep end, and I didn't want that insanity in my life. and i find it hard to make new ones because so many people are drowning in their own sorrows and I'm chilling enjoying my hobbies without shame, god forbid.

I used to like, make friends based on hobbies and media etc. but basically nobody I meet anymore reads, watches movies, or has any opinions anymore that aren't insane. like, if i want to watch Game of Thrones for fun it doesn't mean I'm a morally bankrupt person, but in 2026, that's the kind of shit people say/think.
