    she confessed one night, drunk, and then was SHOCKED that i broke up with on the spot, and began screaming and throwing stuff at me. I kicked her out of my place, I had to put hands on her and shove her out the door, and I never spoke to her again.

    that wasn't even the worst breakup I had. haven't had a relationship since. just many years of casual dating that goes no where because we're so incompatible.

    because they aren't literature. they are popular entertainment.

    English teachers don't love it, they teach it because it's part of the standard curriculum of books they are allowed to teach. there are standard lists of books from which they get to pick, usually selected by the state or school board.

    which is why pretty much every student reads the same books across the country, give or take a few different ones.

    there is a reason it's assigned to 8th graders. they tend to enjoy dumb stories, that require a minimum effort to read and very little effort to understand.

  • It's not a scam if your town/well water is shitty or causes issues.

    I don't have one, but many restaurants in my city have them because the city water is hard, and will destroy pipes and equipment. Like, if you ran an espresso machine in my city w/o a filter the machine would clog every other week from mineral build up. So in terms of lowing your plumber and equipment bills it's a very good investment. Often in my city water heater tanks, for example, will last 5-10 years instead of like 20. Also, a lot of people find the hard water in my city unpalatable.

    The info about your water should be available through your town or city. The water in my city isn't treated because it's perfectly safe and clean, it just has high mineral content. I have lived in places where the water was treated with softeners because it was too hard, and that has other drawbacks.

    If I was building a new home in my same town, I would totally install one because it would pay for itself in the long run. I use a Brita filter and that's good enough for me to clean up the taste, and I do call a plumber to flush my pipes and all that every couple of years to prevent the build up that eats away at them, so that is an ongoing cost I have to eat. And retrofitting a filter system would be stupidly expensive for my building.

    free will is your choices. whether or not you believe those choices are determined or undetermined, is the problem where people don't agree.

    we can't know consciousness because we don't have access to other beings experiences. which means, we can only define our own consciousness, and they are all going to be very different based on the embodied knowledge and experience we possess.

    the biggest mistake most people make is thinking consciousness isn't embodied. AI isn't embodied, it's code. code to which we do, have direct access.

    the gap is whether or not you believe human conscious experience and be reduced to a sufficiently sophisticated computer code, or if you don't. and the issue, as you pointed in another reply, is that if you do, well then everything is conscious to some degree, as long as it can be modeled in computer code.

  • yes, but you're likely destroy it in the process. bite valves are not designed to be cleanable or fixable, but rather replaceable.

    buy a new one. and yeah if it's too old, they won't make new ones, so time for a new bladder.

    I've broken every bite valve I tried to fix.

    Don't let the opinions of strangers who are often willfully and ignorantly interpreting you dictate what you mean.

    If you have certain discussions you want to be a part of, well read up on that topic, get informed. And choose sources, which, as you say, are interested in understanding things, rather than proving a point or 'winning'.

    They exist. But boy oh boy is most of the info out there some weird petty dummy who just wants to beat up on anyone else who has a different opinion. And most often this is the type of person you will encounter in discussions, both IRL and on the internet, and the best response to those people is to ignore them and focus your energy on folks who want to engage you in the way you want to be engaged.
