  • I've seen some interesting discussion of this linked to the idea of survive/thrive strategies. Is the world a dangerous place that calls for avoiding risks and protecting what you have, or is it full of opportunities and calls for exploring and being open to novelty? Neither inclination is fundamentally wrong. But I'm not sure how to reconcile that with modern "rightists" who want to burn down the system and aren't conservative in the lowercase-C sense.

  • Why did California pick such a clearly terrible way of running primaries? It could have worked with ranked-choice voting but, the way it is now, you get hilarious features like the Republican frontrunner being incentivized to have people vote for the other Republican rather than for him (because if he's #1 and a Democrat is #2, he definitely loses the general election, but if he's #1 and the other Republican is #2, he has about 50% odds of winning).

    "We expect casualties with something like this," the president said. "We have three, but we expect casualties - but in the end it's going to be a great deal for the world."

    Not the phrasing I would have chosen, but it sounds like he means "a great deal of good" as in "We've done a great deal to help."

    With that said, any President has to weigh the costs and benefits in lives of military action - it would be crude to explicitly say that some number of soldiers' lives is a favorable exchange for a military objective, but it's essential to do that math in private.

  • I think the opposite is true. Countries afraid of US invasion already knew that only nuclear weapons could reliably protect them. The lesson for them here is that the US is apparently, at least in some cases, willing to go to war to overthrow them if they're near to getting those nuclear weapons.

    I do expect to see more nuclear proliferation, but by allies of the US no longer confident that the US would protect them, not by enemies who would not otherwise have built nuclear weapons.

  • Interesting that he wasn't somewhere unknown to US and/or Israeli intelligence despite the imminent risk of war. I don't know if killing him is going to make things better in the long run, but at least it displays more competence than trying to kill him and failing would have.
