  • My favorite so far has been New Hampshire - lots of space, beautiful forests, cool summers, low taxes, and the general libertarian attitude. I don't really have a least favorite. Even the ones that I felt weren't right for me had their appeal. California was the one I had the strongest negative reaction to. The extent of homelessness in the Bay Area was shocking, but on the other hand the climate was absolutely heavenly. (The two facts are not unrelated.)

  • I suggest trying antidepressants. Obviously I can't diagnose you from one post, but my impression is that your problem is primarily in your ability (or lack thereof) to enjoy your circumstances, not in your circumstances themselves. For what it's worth, I'm an adult with a good job, few responsibilities, and enough money to buy anything I might reasonably want and I still need my bupropion - it's just something about how my brain works, not anything in the external world.

  • Being told that my girlfriend was probably too old to have children naturally - technically about her age rather than mine, but we were close in age.

    A few years earlier, seeing people born when I graduated from high school graduating from high school themselves.

    Or before even that, living longer than my mom had - she died young but I hadn't really felt how young.

  • I deliberately sought out a car without that stuff when I had to buy a new(er) car recently. It's usually quite annoying - the worst was a rental car that had an alarm buzz whenever I activated my turn signal while there was another car anywhere near my blind spot.

    IMO the only technological improvement from the last decade and a half that's worth having is a backup camera, and that's only because I must shamefully confess to being terrible at parallel parking without one despite having years of practice. (I was tempted to buy a Miata since they still have real dials, but ultimately I did settle for a car with a digital display instead of an instrument panel.)

If only the people voting in the Democratic primary vote for the Democrat in the general election, the Democrat definitely loses. So yeah, in this case I trust establishment leaders to do what might have won the election. Vindman still probably would have lost, but at least he had a chance.

    Another committee member told him he needed “to shut up and listen.” Vindman argued that he’d chosen to continue the conversation, but was being “attacked.” The same committee member reportedly told Vindman to “shut the f**k up.”

    “You can’t f**king talk to me that way,” Vindman reportedly responded, before walking away without taking any further questions.

    No one has to take that sort of treatment.

  • Is the portrayal in non-Indian films bias or just a consequence of immigration patterns? The Indian immigrants that I've met in the USA have usually been relatively dark-skinned.

  • That's what people are telling me, but it just doesn't feel right. I'm not sure how to explain - it's not that I think I could only ever have loved my ex, but rather that when I get lonely (and I do a lot) I always focus on the past and mistakes I made. I don't seem to have anything in me that's forward-looking and open to new things. It's a little like how I feel about getting a new dog, now that I think about it. After my dog died three years ago, I really expected that I would mourn and then get another one, but while I really miss having a dog, I find that I don't want a new dog. It feels like the tree was cut down but the stump is still there and there's no room for something else to grow, so to speak.

  • I broke up with my ex because I felt like she would always structure her life so that her job and other things she felt like she had a duty to do took up most of her time and she didn't have much left for me. But it looks like I made a mistake, because almost two years later I still don't want to try dating anyone else. She doesn't want me back. Whoops.

    (I think that if she had been the one who broke up with me, I would have tried to move on, but because I broke up with her, changed my mind, and then got turned down, something in my brain is stuck somehow. It seems like I've bricked my love life.)

  • That seems like a genuinely useful application. You can see which trials are most likely to succeed (as a patient, or as an investor) and hedge risk. I get the impression that people will find some negative way to phrase pretty much any prediction market question.
