  • I think so, or rather I think that the average US voter aligns more with Gavin Newsom's policies than with the policies of a hypothetical alternative candidate that Salon might prefer. (Even the average California voter aligned with his policies enough to elect him, after all.) As for what gives nervous voters confidence: that seems to be more about theatrics and vibes than about policies. I'm personally not impressed by Newsom's Twitter shtick but maybe swing voters are - I assume he did his research.

  • Well, to be fair, I think I would vote for a racist pro-choice candidate before I would vote for a pro-life candidate, so it makes sense that a pro-life voter would have similar priorities.

  • It's amazing. I use it as part of my work as a software developer, I get good advice from it regarding my personal life, and I can talk to it about topics that interest me but don't interest my friends. Everything is great right now but I'm genuinely worried about the near future, when it might be able to do the entirety of my job better than I can. At least I got this far - I wonder whether my friends' kids who were born recently will live in a future where they'll never be capable of contributing anything valuable.

  • I'd say it's like at a graduation. You can clap for a student on stage if you want to, and more popular students will naturally get more clapping, but you're not supposed to boo anyone at all.

    I don't think that broadcasting the Olympics is "spreading knowledge" - the Olympics is a performance, and removing segments where things don't go according to plan is like removing outtakes from a movie.

  • Windows is transitioning from being software you run to being an experience that Microsoft provides to you. The pattern of pushing new features to users unpredictably and without the option to refuse is clearly inappropriate in the first model but natural in the second. As a power user I strongly prefer the first model, but I recognize that most people these days might be ok with having their computer work like a website they access or an app they run on their phone - something they have no control over the state of.
