  • I am doing a PhD in computational neuroscience. We use LLMs a lot. Helps write code that I don't want to bother write and find some bugs due to human error. You sure make a lot of assumptions about strangers online.

  • Depends on what you want to accomplish. How do you employ a hammer non-greedly? You can use AI for meteorological forecasts, predicting diseases, data compression, the uses are endless. For the case of generative AI, it helps writing code, generate synthetic data, create quick proofs of concept etc.

Post hoc measures are a law enforcement delusion, more of an aestheticization of a solution than a solution itself. The money they fruitlessly spend on establishing a surveillance apparatus could've been much better spent on programs teaching people about digital literacy and how to be a proper parent. Saying an anonymous file sharing system enables CSAM is equivalent to saying the existence of a printing press enables libel

  • That's a people problem, not a freenet problem. The same can be said about the fediverse. CSAM has been used exhaustively as pretext for surveillance along with terrorism, so I wouldn't really use this as a reference. Lack of authoritarian oversight is the cost of freedom

  • I set up ollama on our thinkstation in the lab and I use it for looking up documentation, generating readmes, searching papers, and sometimes coding when I know what to do but don't feel it is worth it to spend time on it myself. So basically the chat with web search.

  • Well, yeah, they have fixed weights and the architecture is inspired literally from a vectorized key-value database structure. What you are describing seem to be recursive self learning, which is essential for adaptation. Consciousness is not even well defined, so I wouldn't bother making sense of it.

  • LLM are based on transformer models, which are in turn based on ANNs. Research on ANNs is part of artificial intelligence. You don't need to be conscious to solve a problem.

    The same goes for your own brain. There is a lot to learn about it, but the consensus is that we can model much of our goal oriented behavior as reward seeking probabilistic agentes.

  • Yeah, I notice this with LLMs too, sometimes just having something repeat something back with a bit of a reaction is enough to shape the idea better.
