  • This isn't really about the invisible hand of the market, I was talking about a single company. It costs money to keep those models up, which DDG itself hosts. If we were taking about Google, for example, then I could see the argument since it is a monopoly and my line of reasoning wouldn't work.

    I'm not trying to be troll as you accuse, I'm just trying to think from different perspectives and have something less sensitive to ideology.

    We don't find out the truth by agreeing with everything that panders to our beliefs.

  • Ok, if people hate AI so much, you'll see it being gone soon. No company would want to spend money keeping an useless feature, principally DDG, which is no monopoly.

  • If enough people were that bothered about a box with an AI overview, it wouldn't be there. Simple as that. The thing is that the overview turns out to be helpful in some cases, despite what the haters think.

  • They're a natural creation of humans to facilitate communication

    If a language is easy to learn and easy to use, more people will speak it. The languages that don't adapt die with the people who still insist on using it. There is an evolution and there is a goal, as you said, to communicate. A simpler language is bound to be chosen over one that adds obstacles to communication.

    In the same way evolution is mostly driven by an animal's ability to pass off its genes, language is mostly driven by it's ability to be used and learned.

    Now I'm thinking about Esperanto, maybe that is not completely true, idk

  • My native language isn't English in case you were assuming that. I mention it because my native language has gone through a reform for the reasons of simplification. English may be shit, but it was much much easier to learn than the hell I am going through with German. Even Japanese, which I touched for a few years wasn't nearly as bad. The point of languages it to be simple and efficient, and they should evolve to that goal eventually.

  • You accused me of conflating AI with generative AI while an entire community continuously conflates generative AI with an amalgamation of corporate interests and its irresponsible use. The wiki avoids using absolute statements because that is the proper way to communicate.

    What is disrespectful is putting all the relentless work of AI researchers into the same pot you use to criticize capitalist interests.

  • I don't see how offloading a task that is trivial and that I won't have much to learn out of it is "bad", in that case you shouldn't use calculators. Of course, that is different than completely letting an LLM think for you.

    As for the ecological collapse, that is inherently a problem with capitalism and big tech, AI models don't decide the hardware or what power source they can be trained on.

    What part of it says it is just chatbots? Notice that of says "other forms of data" there? That is because audio, video, and chatbots are the most common cases, not the only cases. Prompts are not even needed. You just have a bunch of data points forming a distribution, and you want a model that samples faithfully from that distribution.

    I agree that the word "AI" and even "generative AI" is being used to basically describe big tech that pushes their products on people like OpenAI and Anthropic, but you gotta understand that relying on context is bound to create misunderstanding. Context doesn't travel along like words do.

  • Generative AI are models that generate data from a learned distribution. Some weather models involve generative AI as in generating weather trajectories, you also use it often in behavioral models where you want to generate animal like behavior from observing how actual animals behave. There are plenty of examples, you just want to be part of the hate bandwagon.

  • I am doing a PhD in computational neuroscience. We use LLMs a lot. Helps write code that I don't want to bother write and find some bugs due to human error. You sure make a lot of assumptions about strangers online.

  • Depends on what you want to accomplish. How do you employ a hammer non-greedly? You can use AI for meteorological forecasts, predicting diseases, data compression, the uses are endless. For the case of generative AI, it helps writing code, generate synthetic data, create quick proofs of concept etc.

  • You can't have CSAM of a child whose pictures were never uploaded to the internet. Post hoc measures are a law enforcement delusion, more of an aestheticization of a solution than a solution itself. The money they fruitlessly spend on establishing a surveillance apparatus could've been much better spent on programs teaching people about digital literacy and how to be a proper parent. Saying an anonymous file sharing system enables CSAM is equivalent to saying the existence of a printing press enables libel
