I love this picture, because nobody is wasting time wringing their hands about the impropriety, they're all just doing what they see as needing to be done. Whether it's the guy speaking, the one handing him notes, the people yelling at him or trying to physically stop him from speaking, or the people defending him with their bodies and physically holding back the ones trying to stop him.
The sense of duty is on full display from all sides in this image, and everyone is doing it with a sense of decorum too. A breach of procedure for sure, but who can say anyone in this photo doesn't look in total possession of themselves?
If someone presents work that a person is impressed with, it shouldn't matter to that person if the software they used is perceived as inferior.
Also, I think it's more likely that a person simply hasn't heard of GIMP, rather than having heard that it has a reputation for anything.
that the lanyard or boondoggle string is named gimp in some places
I had no clue, I've never heard of that. What region is this in?
and no one around here knows that it is a slur in other places.
It's not just a slur though. That's what I understood it as for a long time, but then I found out that it's also a thing in the kink/bondage community. Apparently it's what they call a dude wearing leather straps on his torso and a leather face mask that covers his eyes and sometimes mouth. I think it's a submissive role? I don't know much about it though.
But yeah so I can see how saying that in a professional setting could be off-putting to some colleagues...
For one thing, it's blatant corruption. Attempting to bribe the voters with taxpayer dollars? Using federal funds for partisan activity?
Aside from that, didn't he make promises like that last time, which he never delivered on? How stupid could his base really be? (please don't answer that. I know they're dumb as hell).
Lastly, if we look back to his last term when he used federal money to write checks to every american adult, the effect it had on inflation as well as the national debt was enormous.
It's not about being childish, prissy, or clutching pearls. It's about how in a professional setting, image and reputation matters. And if the name of the software you use might damage either of those in the eyes of others, it can be risky to say you use it.
I've heard stories from people who say they've been to conferences or networking events where someone seemed interested in their work, and asked what they used. When they tell them Gimp, the person walks away and never contacts them.
If you're a freelancer especially, losing potential clients and contracts over the name of your software is a serious issue that many people can't afford to ignore.
I'll clarify that it wasn't my intent to defend the AI hype. I agree that LLMs are just predictive algorithms that use probabilistic and non-deterministic heuristics to extrapolate likely responses.
I was just pointing out that saying they can't come up with anything original is maybe not the best angle because it opens up a can of worms about whether even humans can come up with anything truly original, which is philosophically fraught.
Yes the mathematician solved the equation. But he couldn't have done so without spending years devoted to learning the state of mathematics today, including all the work and research and theorems and proofs from all the mathematicians who came before him.
Maybe he applied old concepts in new ways to solve a problem that hadn't been solved before. I doubt he invented an entirely new form of mathematics not based in anything that existed before. And even if he did that, chances are he only knew how to do that because of what he's learned from pre-existing systems of mathematics.
Yeah and if it prompts you for a password that's because the computer has a self-destruct system built-in for security. The sysadmin doesn't want strangers running sarcastic commands locally, so it's super important to type the password correctly or else the servers could explode
I was being facetious, because otherwise there would be rubber duck stores at every river. Also it would be an environmental disaster if the ducks were for the river
There's also something called a bodkin which has a loop to put the new string in and it's like a long needle with a rounded end that gives you some rigidity to push through
I thought scoobididoo was what dogs say when you offer them scooby snacks?
