  • I'm searching myself as I found myself in the same situation. I do tend to just go straight to the source and follow feeds from various Foss projects they are also not spamming you with articles and normally only post if if it its noteworthy.

    I also am subscribed to AlternativeTo but they are also fairly slopified. You can probably filter it out if they tag the articles accordingly but didn't look into that myself.

    Switching to Linux and Android makes me feel excited for new technology again. I did not felt that in a long time. All the software is just how it should be. No kings, no masters to appease–just the will to make something helpful. Also the homebrew community is real fun, hacked my DSi and Wii and I love how they reverse engineered a lot of servers that were shut down. Its small but fun–just the fact that we are all on a server that should not exists from all over the world brings me joy.

  • It accelerates learning by skipping over the most crucial part, the thinking part. Things like the scantron on the other hand accelerates it by skipping tedious parts where there was almost no thinking to begin with.

    And yes, while calculators might also skip some of that, its in my opinion not comparable as you still need to understand how to get to the solution when using an calculator.

  • I do see quite a few people having something along the lines of "AI Artist" in their bio whenever im on my way of blocking them, but there is probably less reason to argue about that.

    For me its by the way also less the slopification of the web that I dislike about AI the most and not even the environmental cost (though its definitely up there), but just the implications it has on the education system. I think it has an even slower burn there, but maybe thats just because we already had a headstart in destroying our planet.

  • I read Utopia for Realists earlier this year. A big portion of it is about UBI and is a great read for anybody new to this topic. The thing that surprised me the most is that we were fairly close in the USA in having something similar, this was under Nixon. UBI seems to not really be that left of an idea as i assumed it was. If you are too poor you are effectively costing the country more money than it would cost to just help those to be able to work/spend money themselves.

    In my city there was a citizen initiative to have a test run last year, but sadly opposing parties ran a disinformation campaign against it. Saying we already have enough studies that show its not worth it. (Which is a flat out lie, but I guess you can interpret studies as you wish). Most people fell for it. I think for politicians its just too easy to have big enough portion of people uneducated and too busy with their 9-5 jobs so they do not realize how they are being taken advantage off.

    EDIT: I do think though that one form of UBI is the future as well, its just a matter of when. But I might also be too much of an optimist. Or maybe we could also just get rid of advertisement that would work as well. Splitting the real work thats then left to do.

  • sorry, but I do think its rather funny. also i do not think OPs meme is in reference of the actual work being done around the use of ai but rather the ai use itself and people who put themselves to an higher standard because of it.

  • A question for GNOME/KDE users

  • I wanna say yes, but it really does not make a whole lot of sense.

    GNOME is less space efficient which on a smaller display is crucial. It does have better touchscreen support in case your laptop has that (and the bigger margins do come in handy here). But i know it might sound weird but GNOME fits the vibe of a laptop better. No surprise it gets often compared to macOS and KDE being the Windows equivalent. Its just less serious... just as a laptop is. Not that you don't get shit done on there, its just a bit more cozy :)

    I have an eye on https://sinty.dev/ as well though I think there is already a alpha out, but I have done enough distro/de hoping this and last year :) From what I can tell its GNOME but with less margins. The design is still very libadwaita like which makes modern GNOME apps not look out of place. It is from the same developer that did Vanilla OS and Bottles so this won't be abandoned too quickly. In the age of vibe coded and quickly forgotten garbage you can't be too sure about that.

  • KDE is too inconsistent when it comes to margins and font sizes. I still have it installed on my Desktop PC which ever so often use to see how things are going.

    My daily driver (laptop) runs GNOME though. I do not like the slightly too large margins and the flat design (old skeuomorphism icons was peak). It is consistent and despite what everyone says thanks to Extensions customisable enough. Here is my extension list:

    • ArcMenu
    • Dash to Panel
    • Grand theft Focus
    • Gtk4 Desktop Icons NG
    • Rounded Window Corners Reborn

    and of course:

    • Activate Linux

    It is really cozy and I like it very much. :)

  • Definitely, I see a lot of potential as it mitigates a bit the problems that come with federation. On the threadiverse you almost don't notice it, but on mastodon it can be quite jarring.

    And if they do that they could also embed peertube videos properly, so channels ate more exposed across fedi.

  • Do you actually have to pay for YouTube Music? I can use it perfectly well in the browser with uBlock Origin. And on the Phone there is Metrolist (yes those client have the possibility to stop working, but for me at least everything works mostly smoothly, and if google manages to block them there is still Morphee using the official client)

    I guess you cannot upload so many MP3s in the free tier? But if you have so many I would follow other peoples advice of self-hosting Jellyfin/Navdrone if you are able to. Or depending on your listening style maybe actually just copying them to your phone.
