  • I don’t know what STD you’re talking about, but I agree completely. They even made a woman chief of security! Obvious political pandering.

And Picard praising Riker for his insubordination in the very first episode nearly made me gag. It didn’t used to be like this, Captain Kirk would never… well, sometimes… I mean, look, it’s just different when he does it!

  • At the start of Lower Decks, I remember debates about whether a comedic cartoon series could even count as canon. By the end, it was being used as evidence that another, live action show wasn't canon!

  • I hate new Trek. A bald French captain with an English accent? A blind man flying the ship? The first officer is completely unprofessional, trying to bang every woman he sees (Even holograms! The ship has a virtual brothel, now!). It wont survive a year, I guarantee it.

  • Really? I've seen some people who really hate it, but my impression from most in my little bubble is more a tone of pleasant surprise. There was even a thread here a week ago titled Star Trek academy (spoilers) is awesome. Actually, I just looked it up for the link and you commented on it!

Anyway, some quick points I like:

    1. It embraces IDIC wholeheartedly. It doesn't just show diversity as being good or normal (which is de rigueur for Trek), but shows what strength it can bring. The third episode, while a bit of a silly romp, is a great example of the characters clashing but growing both internally and as a group as a result of working through that clash.
    2. I think Holly Hunter is doing a fabulous job. I've said elsewhere, her character isn't all that much on the page, but she brings such an enormous confidence and comfort to it that I don't think many could pull off without it seeming inauthentic.
    3. I'm very intrigued by the angle of rebuilding a fallen Federation, which Discovery did an OK job setting up but didn't delve into as much as I'd have liked. It's an exciting new backdrop. I'm also relieved it moved Federation HQ to Betazed, following in Disco's footsteps of downplaying the usual Earth-centric nature of the Trek universe. Maybe a small point, but I didn't think that would happen since the Academy itself stayed in San Francisco and I'm very happy to see it.
    4. It's fun to watch. The humour works for me, the characters are charming, and they have good chemistry. Some of them came off as cliche teen drama archetypes on first introduction, but they're already doing a good job moving past that. For episode 3, it's not bad.
  • Earthy, peaty… and I detect hints of lilac.

  • I think Academy is pretty good so far 🤷

  • Tied with all the other characters.

  • OK, like I said, you don't believe in Star Trek's egalitarian future. You could have just agreed up front that you don't like girls in Star Trek, then.

  • They aren't over-represented, you're gerrymandering - purposefully drawing lines so that women fall inside your tally, and men don't. If we simply do an objective headcount of the recurring Starfleet officers in the show so far, I get 4 women and 3 men. As even a count as you can get without cutting someone in two, or adding a redundant character.

And The Doctor is a goddamn treasure.

  • Deal - and we can both make the occasional post on lemmy about how shitty our respective objects of ridicule are. I wouldn't have it any other way.

  • How about applied science? You've deduced you wont like a show, now what do you do with that fact? If you maybe spend three or four minutes letting everyone know you wont be fucking with this show and then move on to other things, I totally respect you.

But if you put out multiple forty minute videos of you pouring over every frame of each two minute trailer so you can froth at the mouth about someone wearing glasses or a Jem’Hadar having tits, you're just eating up bandwidth that could be spent on something meaningful.

  • It'd hurt to delete any of the little time we had with Tasha. That's the only reason I'd hesitate.

  • Admiral Vance is the exception, yes, but not running the academy, just there to smile at the captain’s quirky behavior.

What if I were to tell you that Ake is just there to dole out tough love to Caleb? He's the show's protagonist. Others may have their arcs, but they'll ultimately bend around his story.

But Vance is the one who gave Aka the job, and ran the negotiations in the second episode. He's had a more prominent and varied role than any of the women under Ake's command so far. And you're still ignoring the EMH, Ake's CMO and our heavily advertised legacy character. You're not being very honest in your arguments so far.

And you're saying it doesn't make sense for a woman to be in charge of something? Even if there's a prominently featured man both above and below her in the chain of command? And men at the same relative level in other divisions? Do you just not accept Star Trek's premise of an egalitarian future? I'm not seeing how my initial characterization of you was wrong.

  • No, you were listing things you didn’t like about the show. Stand by it.

Anyway, you’re wrong. The EMH is in a position of authority at the academy, and Admiral Vance is in a position of authority over the academy. There’s also a man in charge of the war college. So what’s supposed to be unprecedented here? Just women existing in a military?

  • People with standards wait to see a show before they judge it.

  • The Next Generation’s cast was less mixed than Starfleet Academy’s. You just didn’t notice because it was weighted more towards man than women.

  • Every position of authority at the academy is held by a woman

Ew! Star Trek gots GIRLS in it? Gross!!

  • Those videos really exploded in my feed about a week before it came out, and none of them has seen it yet. I don’t know if it’s coordinated or if it’s just the inevitable response of the algorithm rewarding topical hate mongering, but it’s a painfully obvious grift either way.

  • I’m very happy with Academy so far, but I’m upvoting due the quality meme.
