  • There’s a similar fun fact about the ‘60s Addams Family house interior being mostly pink. It worked perfectly well for a show filmed in black and white, but obviously no one would argue that that’s how Gomez and Morticia actually decorated their home.

    But for the purposes of a meme, it’s fine.

  • Possibly. Most people's first thought when they heard "Batman" at the time was probably still the '60s series, but Dark Knight Returns had gotten a bit of press already pushing back on that. But really, Burton's sensibilities just work with the character. Maybe it's whoever convinced him to give the job a chance we have to thank.

  • Eeh. Most of the complaints I see in this thread about Trek 2009 would apply as well to TWoK if people were being even handed. It's a pew pew action film. There are no deep philosophical questions being tackled. It's not utopian -- Starfleet is portrayed as a straight forward space navy that works with real scientists only begrudgingly.

    There's kick ass high drama and a decent character study of an ageing Kirk, but the character work on Kirk and Spock in 2009 wasn't all that bad, either.

  • Burton's Batman films are top tier, though. If I get a great director with a solid vision for the character/story, I don't care at all if they were a fan before hand or not.

  • Indeed. Nicolas Meyer was the same, and most fans seem to love his contributions to the franchise. Being a newcomer isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes a fresh perspective can be a great thing.

    Not to say I love Abrams’ work, but in the end he did more harm to Star Wars than to Trek, and by all accounts he’s a life long Star Wars fan.

  • Don't listen to the naysayers. I've been a trekkie since the '90s, and I very much enjoy Disco. It's not perfect (season 2 was especially messy), but most of the criticisms I hear against it make no sense to me and/or could easily apply to other beloved instalments in the franchise.

  • I would not say TNG was particularly more subtle. A gendered alien from a genderless race being put through conversion therapy is about as subtle as Let That Be Your Last Battlefield was. A planet of literal Native Americans in space being forcibly moved by Picard, who finds out he is the actual descendent of a 17th century coloniser, is somehow even less subtle. The Measure of a Man would have worked without explicitly bringing up slavery, but they made sure that it was brought up, and that it was a black woman who did it. Star Trek has pretty much always shouted its message for the people in the back row.

  • Buffer time is definitely the episode where I stopped doubting they knew how to handle trek.

    Interesting, I almost gave up on the show after the buffer time episode. Watching a Starfleet captain create a timesheet-obsessed toxic work environment made it seem like the show would be too much "The Office in space".

    I'm glad I gave it a little more time, though, it definitely picks up for me after the first half-season or so.
