  • And the worst outright spoil twists for you.

I wonder who the mystery villain could be - maybe the character with a grudge from two seasons ago that the “previously on” chose to remind us about?

I just try not to pay attention to them.

  • Showing up late is no problem for me. Showing up early, though….

  • Third season. Enterprise had a gas leak.

  • The thing’s gotta have a tailpipe.

  • Me, a Canuck, seeing a potential Eurovision entry as part of the budget.

  • Instead of showing WHY something is good and just and explore it within an episode, they just present it as fact, and then they go off to some random adventure.

This is an odd sentiment to me, because I feel like you’re describing what Star Trek always did, and is generally seen as one of its great strengths. We didn’t need to be told that black women and white men could serve together as equals, they just showed Uhura on the bridge functioning like any other officer as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

And this is one of the many respects in which I think Orville falls on its face. Topa never appears in any episode that isn’t about her oppression in one way or another. She’s not allowed to just be a character like any other, taking part in random stories about growing up aboard ship. That casual representation is missing.

  • Demonstrating that they’ve always known, and just haven’t cared.

  • It’s me! The three armed man!

  • Yeah, it's essentially a TNG fan film series with some actual money behind it. I really came to resent it when every discussion about a modern Trek series had someone popping in to say that say they should be doing Orville instead. Like Trek shouldn't be allowed to progress past 1994.

Still, I enjoy a good fan series, so I do recommend it. Just go in with the right expectations.

  • With prep time?

  • TOS below ENT is unfathomable. I’ll have a go:

DS9, TOS, TNG, DISCO, SNW, VOY, LD, PIC, PRO, TAS, ENT

SNW would have beat out DISCO if it weren’t for season 3. Of course, I’m super mercurial and will stand by none of this in a week.

  • This. Some of the best Trek is non-canon. Personally I’d recommend anything by Diane Duane or the Reeves-Stevenses.

  • Adding Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites to the list. An amazingly good duo if you don’t mind ‘90s graphics.

  • Sorry, what were we talking about?

  • Ironically, the deeper it goes the more it upsets me.

  • That’s still not ironic! How deep does this go???

  • Maybe. On the other hand, Picard season 3 also confirmed that Beverly can make peace with keeping this kind of information to herself…

  • Neither was Jason Vigo. I’m still harbouring suspicions about Wesley Crusher, though…
