I like computers, trains, space, radio-related everything and a bunch of other tech related stuff. User of GNU+Linux.I am also dumb and worthless.My laptop is ThinkPad L390y running Arch.I own RTL-SDRv3 and RSP1 clone.

    I think ProtonVPN might might be an exception here. They're pretty trustworthy as far as I know, and have some free servers.

    But my go-to is Mullvad, mainly for the flat pricing. I hate how most only have good prices if you buy a full year or so.

    Looking up things that may be hard to find otherwise, or at least attempting to. Hell, it once cited me a blog on website that didn't even have a domain name.

    And it can be useful to quickly either remember or find how to use some program. Get the command from LLM, check what it does in the man page and use what's needed. Faster than just reading through a man page from scratch.

    It's like 90% accurate, so it's often faster to just verify the information than research on my own (possibly due to how shitty search engines become).

    On the other hand, with certain more obscure things it will just claim that such a thing doesn't exist, saying that there is a misunderstanding on human side. For example when I tried searching for a certain cheap data plan.

    Seriously though, I don't know what to do with it. I had to print something for school, around 200 pages. I printed them white on black, only consumed half a bottle.I bought that on sale on AliExpress for like 70 cents (last I checked it was around €18).

    Anyway, quite funny when you take out the paper and have to let it dry. Also, I had to use 120g/m2. Standard 80g/m2 paper would wrinkle up and roll up while drying.

    I only have experience with a shop I had "internship" (slacking off) at during high school.Basically all they would do software-wise is re-install Windows, backup files, copy over files, install new installation of Windows.

    The only response I got about Linux is "we'd have no licenses to sell" (Windows, MS Office, ESET,...), so that was a no.

    That makes it sound like as if he could damage it that way.

    And "pay a professional" may better be saved up for reinstalling Windows. That's what most may be limited to do anyway (to avoid questions about Linux).A lot of businesses will only use and provide products where you can blame somebody up the chain (in this case Microsoft).

    I've started with same amount of experience, if not less. I got a laptop, and didn't like what was on it. So I wanted to try Linux. My experience was so low I spent hours searching for "just plain, original, unmodified Linux".Anyway, in 2 days it was running Mint without issues. But I almost got turned away by some bad "newbie" guide that shown CLI-based partitioning as part of Mint installation. Meanwhile I didn't even know what a "partition" was.

    And eventually I went through the typical pipeline, Mint -> Manjaro -> bidurnal distro-hopping -> Mint -> Manjaro -> Arch

  • Or, while you won't get answer on hardware compatibility, just give it a try in VM under Windows.

    Won't cost anything, and can easily be ditched when you want to try something else.

  • Just a note, the person just gave you a link for Debian, which is one of the main distributions. However there's many others, as there isn't a single Linux (OS), so you may want to check what you prefer.Debian-based distributions have the best program support, at least for some of the proprietary stuff. "Download for Linux" in those cases means you get a .deb file which should work fine on these distros.

    I personally recommend Linux Mint for most cases.

    Oh, and you may have a bit of issue with drivers, especially if it's a newly released laptop. That's the software that makes hardware work properly with the OS. Ubuntu and Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) have graphical driver manager which may come in handy.

  • Yup. I started wirh Linux, and trying Windows was a bit of pain.

    I had to run some mystery (included in installer) script to create local account (BypassNRO.cmd), then I remember having to change something in registry, but I don't remember what that was, disable BITS and SysMain because they were slowing down the PC, disable automatic updates in Group Policy Editor because there's no other way, get printer drivers from archive.org because despite HP saying it should automatically install, Windows said to get it from manufacturers website, and the Bluetooth would just randomly dissapear despite always working on Linux (Mint).

    Well, and on Linux Mint I just had to install Nvidia driver and Realtek WiFi drivers in Driver Manager (GUI).

    And of course, Arch was a bit harder to set up, but the Wiki is done well, so nothing too crazy. But I should probably revisit it, because honestly, I don't remember how I set up my PC anymore. I went with encryption and boot separate from ESP, which differ from the default guide.
