  • I use it because Apple is the only manufacturer that understands that laptops need great displays, keyboards, and trackpads. Most other laptop manufacturers fail in one or all of those categories. The new Framework 13 may be an exception to this, but as someone that bought the 16, that was hot garbage. So I gave it up for a Macbook.

    With Asahi, I have a rock-solid Linux experience on a laptop with good build quality.

  • I attempted to learn two weeks ago. I know Rust, C, and Python. Nix documentation is getting better, but still nowhere near as good as most other langs. And the LSPs are genuinely useless.

    Nix is better if you can understand it, but very few people I work with do.

    Unfortunately, it does flicker occasionally if VRR isn't enabled, but that's why it's behind a debug flag to begin with. I can't wait for Linux 7.3 to complete the implementation.

  • Linux definitely has HDR. I've been using Bazzite with Steam Big Picture mode as my TV interface for years and can use HDR just fine.

    I definitely recommend piracy, but there are also ways to get streaming services to send full quality streams. I won't recommend them though, because you shouldn't have to do it in the first place for a service you're paying for. Just pirate and use a media server or something like Kodi for a nice interface for local files.

    The fact that the Bun author didn't know that Zig also has LTO really puts the rest of their claims into question.

  • The performance PS5 on Linux is actually very good thanks to the better hardware and more stable graphics drivers. It's basically as performant as a comparably specced PC.

    However, the fact that rebooting the system means you have to rerun the jailbreak to boot back into Linux does make it impractical for anything other than a cool gaming toy. But if you already have a PS5 vulnerable to the required exploits, it's fun to do and it's nice to have access to your Steam library.

    Yes, it's true that #!/usr/bin/env bash is a more reliable way to get bash, but you mentioned that you wanted a POSIX shell, not that you specifically needed bash, so #!/bin/sh will work on any system including NixOS.

    Also, export a=b does work in Fish. But you don't have to use it if you don't know how it works.

  • Basically every non-Windows system comes with a POSIX-compliant shell at /bin/sh. If you're using shebangs in your POSIX shell scripts like you should, using Fish as your Friendly Interactive Shell shouldn't be a problem.
