  • Linux definitely has HDR. I've been using Bazzite with Steam Big Picture mode as my TV interface for years and can use HDR just fine.

    I definitely recommend piracy, but there are also ways to get streaming services to send full quality streams. I won't recommend them though, because you shouldn't have to do it in the first place for a service you're paying for. Just pirate and use a media server or something like Kodi for a nice interface for local files.

  • The performance PS5 on Linux is actually very good thanks to the better hardware and more stable graphics drivers. It's basically as performant as a comparably specced PC.

    However, the fact that rebooting the system means you have to rerun the jailbreak to boot back into Linux does make it impractical for anything other than a cool gaming toy. But if you already have a PS5 vulnerable to the required exploits, it's fun to do and it's nice to have access to your Steam library.

  • Actually, /bin/sh is available on NixOS 🤓

    Yes, it's true that #!/usr/bin/env bash is a more reliable way to get bash, but you mentioned that you wanted a POSIX shell, not that you specifically needed bash, so #!/bin/sh will work on any system including NixOS.

    Also, export a=b does work in Fish. But you don't have to use it if you don't know how it works.

  • Basically every non-Windows system comes with a POSIX-compliant shell at /bin/sh. If you're using shebangs in your POSIX shell scripts like you should, using Fish as your Friendly Interactive Shell shouldn't be a problem.

It doesn't sound like the Talon dev knows that actual members of the KDE team are earnestly interested in making Talon work with their Wayland compositor. It sounds like they assumed it's just another user asking for Wayland support without any way of helping to make it happen.

    The Talon and KDE devs should open a direct line of communication to actually get this going.

  • Yeah. The real challenge with leaving GitHub is the availability of free macOS and Windows build environments (if you're in to that weird stuff 🧐).

    Codeberg only has Linux runners (to my knowledge), but I spent the time to make my project cross-compile to macOS and it was well worth it to move my stuff off of shithub.

  • I don't disagree, but I'm also not focused on the GNU aspect of this. In many cases, non-GNU stuff, like MUSL is actually better (in my opinion). My issue is with non-copyleft licenses. I've written alternatives to various GNU utilities because I find some of their behavior to be undesirable, but I license them under the GPL because I think that the alternatives are a net negative on society.

    And I think that Canonical, like any other profit-driven entity, will do anything to increase their profit, and when they think they can get away with something shitty and they believe it will make more money, they'll do that. Pushover licenses give them the option to restrict things more than if they relied on copyleft tools.

    Inb4 people say that it's impossible to do anything shitty and if they did, people would just fork 😴 That isn't how it works. Defaults matter and most people aren't going to go out of their way to learn about this or replace their distro when they start locking it down.
