  • Do that. Install Bazzite, they go out of their way to make everything just work so you don't have to. And since you're nervous about messing something up, Bazzite has the extra benefit of being an immutable distro, which means you can't actually change any of the important files that keep your computer running (not easily). So you can't mess up your OS, updates happen in the background and only apply when you restart, and rolling back to the previous update is easy should you need to.

One thing to decode though is your desktop environment of KDE or GNOME. KDE is a bit more like windows in layout, GNOME is more like a Mac layout. Purely personal preference.

Bonus, if you end up loving Bazzite, you can install it on your steamdeck, which is what I did.

  • I think that greatly depends on to whom you are speaking.

  • Some I've collected over the years.

    • "At this point, you can only impress me."
    • "My opinion of you can only go up from here"
    • "The bar was on the ground and you brought a shovel."
    • "Would you think less of me if ____." "I could never think less of you."

      • Britta says "nobody respects me any less as a political activist, right?"

        Long pause...

Jeff: "the level to which we respect you as a political activist has definitely not changed"

    • “You aren’t the biggest idiot in the world but you better hope they don’t die”
    • Unencumbered by the thought process.
    • "I'm guessing you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling." - Malcolm Reynolds
    • "My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle." Malcolm Reynolds
    • "You're the reason we have warning labels."
    • "They only got two brain cells and both of them are fighting for third place."
    • "It's impossible to underestimate you."
      • "Don't underestimate me." "I couldn't possibly."

    • "If you were half as smart as you think you are, you’d be twice as smart as you really are."
    • "If you ever had a clever thought, it died alone and afraid."
    • "They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge."
    • "He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any man I know." - Abraham Lincoln
    • "May I ask what's on your mind, if you'll forgive the overstatement?"
    • "You could hide your own Easter eggs."
    • "I can explain it again, if you'd like, but I can't understand for you."
    • "He is a modest man with much to be modest about."
    • "I would agree with you but then we would both be wrong"
    • "Your secret is safe with my indifference."
  • I love all the breads, and that sounds yummy right now, but light with caraway is my favorite—almost certainly because it was the first I was exposed to. It won't appeal to probably anyone, but as a kid my favorite sandwich was seeded rye, raspberry preserves, and chunky peanut butter.

  • Light with caraway seeds

  • Tried to schedule a covid vaccine at Costco, but they have a note saying a Rx is required in the following states. Oregon was listed, but WA and CA weren't. So I'm going to try my luck at one across the border in WA.

  • What's yours look like?

  • This is what I've been trying to figure out, so I'm glad you did it. I have a Synology too and I've outgrown it, but building my own server scratch is daunting so I just wanted to hook a DAS up to a mini PC and call it good. But there were a lot of people online saying it was a bad idea.

  • If meshtastic is what you were referring to, check out meshcore. Same hardware, different firmware. Meshtastic has a problem the more nodes you add, so the more people using it, the worse it becomes.

Meshcore is newer, and doesn't have as many features per se, but it's much more reliable. Right now, the entire Seattle metro area into Vancouver, BC is on it and it's running extremely well.

  • That's the bar we're at?

  • Yup. Originally, Irish and Italian immigrants weren't white. Syrians and Arabs have always been white though, because as they argued in court, if they weren't white, neither was Jesus. So that case ended quickly.

  • Same! I was one of the early migrants just before the mass migration, having seen the writing on the wall and having already joined Mastodon. It was a great time initially, a bit of "you're new? okay, I've figured a few things out, try this". We caught Ernest by surprise because he was only making a proof of concept to offer an alternative to Lemmy. And then we showed up in droves. But he did his best, and while it was bumpy, it was still an overall great experience, much like the early days of Reddit, pre-Digg.

I still like the kbin-style instances over Lemmy, but yeah, it's not quite the same any more. That said, still preferable to Reddit these days.

Thank you, Ernest. Hope you're recovering wherever you are.

  • I did the notification thing. If the outdoor temperature is lower than my indoor temperature and above 17° and the humidity is under 60% and the windows are closed, it sends me a notification to open them.

Same if the outdoor temps get above 24° and the windows are still open, it reminds me to close them.

  • I love the integrations with immich and owntracks, as well as having an OIDC login. What kind of resources does this need for a server?

  • Damn, someone beat me to it!

  • Yeah, that's the part I'm having trouble with. Can't decide on something serious, easy to communicate and that I like. Definitely a me problem.

  • I have a domain and an email address through it, but my problem is I can't find a domain name I like enough to both keep and give out to others as a long term contact point. The one I have right now is silly, and not easy to communicate over the phone.

It's a me problem, but if I ever figure out something I'm will to keep and is available, that's the goal.

  • I'll probably go with one of the other roms on an older phone or possibly one of the Linux phones. It won't be exactly what I want, but it'll be better than their walled garden bullshit. That's precisely why I left Apple way back when.

  • Do it! It's not that bad. Everyone's got different needs, but I switched to fastmail and have been enjoying it.

  • Are you looking for Docker Desktop specifically? Or will docker/podman work for the time being? If you don't already have it, bazzite-dx comes with docker pre-installed, which would be a simple rebase to get you there.
