I use Debian btw

  • My cousin and I once invented the "Booter."

    One would ride a bike.

The other would ride a scooter.

The bike would tow the scooter with about a half dozen bungee cords. If you accelerated really hard on the bike, the cords would store all that extra energy, contract, unhook from each other, and send the scooter rocketing past.

Great fun. We never wore pads or helmets. For weight savings, of course. We were engineers first.

  • Coffee has always made me shit from the time I started drinking it regularly when I was 21.

But now, a cup of water in the morning will trigger it. Like my body says, "MOISTURE?? I guess we don't need this anymore!!"

I've stopped drinking coffee since getting on Adderall. Which is a shame. I was getting into some good stuff. But I've got a history of heart trouble in my family so coffee has been replaced by herbal tea. Gotta have a hot drink to truly wake up.

  • Or my guacamole 30 seconds after I scoop it onto my plate.

  • Yesterday, I ate two eggs for breakfast, water for lunch, and chow mein, kung pao chicken, broccoli beef, two nutri grain bars, twenty-seven gummy bears, and a small milkshake for dinner.

  • My father in law (age 78) just got a new phone. His last phone cost $100 new, was only a year old, and took actual seconds to respond to most things. It finally got stuck boot looping to recovery mode so I lent him my old OnePlus 7T to use because we were gonna get him a new one for his birthday, but he just went ahead and bought a new (used) Samsung for $200.

The Samsung is actually a pretty decent phone, but he refuses to learn how to use it. He badly wanted to use his old phone, but it won't work anymore. He made me put the SIM card in his old phone. I told him he's free to use that old thing, but I won't be helping him with it anymore.

He is finally learning how to use his new phone a month after getting it. The man refuses to shell out for a half decent phone, despite having the money to. He'd rather spend $150 every 18 months buying a new crap phone than spend $400 on one that could easily last 5 years.

He doesn't even need a smart phone. He doesn't understand what a launcher is. So he downloads whatever crapware is advertised to him, then gets really confused why his home screen is all fucky. I've told him he should really consider getting a flip phone and using a laptop for anything else. He doesn't want to. He wants a smart phone.

I can't save this man. My parents are in their mid 50s and have finally caught up. 20 years ago, I was telling them they do not need the crapware DVD that came with the digital camera to import their pictures. All you need to do is put the SD card in the computer and copy the DCIM folder to the Pictures folder on the computer, then delete everything in the SD card's DCIM folder to free up space.

Since I don't use Windows anymore, I don't answer Windows questions anymore lol If anyone calls with a Windows question these days, I just nope outta that.

  • iirc, the Biden admin threatened to step in last time this happened. We all know Trump is gonna do fuck all to alleviate the problem.

  • Oh, I absolutely made the assumption in my calculation that he wasn't lying. He can't even lie a meaningful amount his administration has supposedly saved.

But you and I both know the dopes who voted for him ate. that. shit. up.

  • Edit: I'm listening to AOC talk about that speech, and she is, of course, one million percent right. Not once did he mention Medicaid. They're bringing up this other bullshit to distract us. They distracted me. If you upvoted my comment in its original form, you were probably distracted, too. We should be focused on what they're REALLY doing: Gutting Medicaid.

I listened to his address. He listed off some 19 items where they slashed the so-called "waste, fraud, and abuse." The first thing was like 22 billion and the next eighteen added up to another 2.5 billion. So all in, they saved 24.5 billion.

Trump's requested 2018 budget (pre-pandemic, pre-inflation spike) was 4.094 trillion. Adjusted for inflation, it'd be 5.247 trillion today, which means they've saved basically nothing.

Well, 0.47% to be more precise. Another way of putting it, if the government was spending $100.00 in 2018, now it's spending $99.53. And if most people saw a thing that costs $99.53, they're probably gonna tell you, "That thing's a hundred bucks."

Meanwhile, a dozen of the bottom shelf eggs I bought this morning cost me six dollars. Four weeks ago, these were $1.89. My favorite brand isn't even available anymore. Also, the store limits you to two cartons at a time. They do sell packages up to five dozen, though. Those cost $42. And yes, that is a worse deal. Much worse. But if you need 60 eggs at once, that's probably how you're go about it.

Not to mention the planes falling out of the sky right now. But at least I still have my freedom, I guess?

  • Exactly thirty minutes later...

Anus: Hey, Brain - we've got a little problem here.

Brain: Can't it wait? We're driving.

    Anus: Absolutely the fuck not.

  • He's wonderful. He was my wife's cat before we met, but he adopted me on Day 1.

The special feeling wore off pretty fast, though. The bar for becoming his friend is so low. He immediately accepts anyone, regardless of what they offer. He's become friends with every plumber, electrician, handyman, HVAC tech, campaign door knocker, traveling salesperson, family member, my mom (who doesn't like cats)...you name it, he'll be their friend lol

  • Look, I get the hate because this looks appalling, but I'm thinking of the way these things might taste together, and, I mean, I wouldn't say no. The sweet-savory combination would be a good contrast that lends some complexity. And the creaminess of the soup seems like it'd be a good fit for the flakiness of tuna and bready texture of the waffle.

Only thing I'm passing on is the olives. No thanks, bud.

At least, I'm not counting this out before I try it.

    As for my wife.....

    I don't think she's a fan lmao

  • She must be an empath.

  • In all seriousness, periods of marked deflation are generally not economically prosperous times. The economy deflated more than 20% between 1929 and 1936. But we don't call that period in time "The Really Cool American Price Drop." It goes by another name I can't think of right now, and it's making me feel greatly depressed.

We shouldn't be fighting for lower prices. We should be fighting for better wages that track with prices over time.

  • The vast majority of American imported steel comes from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea. As for aluminum, Canada is the only one worth mentioning. Source.

Canada and Mexico weren't even considered adversarial until Trump pissed and moaned about how NAFTA is soooooo bad.

For starters, the United States, according to the Reuters article, imported some 508,000 tons of Chinese steel in 2024. By comparison, we imported 6.6 million tons of steel from Canada. According to the American Steel and Iron Institute, American steel production was 1.6 million tons in one week in November alone, and the nation produced over 74 million tons by November 2 of last year. You can annualize that to about 88.4 million tons last year. You can dig as far down to that number to calculate that we produce more steel domestically in two and a half days than we import from China in a year.

They're really bitching and whining about maybe a dime flowing out of the country when the other 90 cents stays in it.

The American steel industry isn't what it was in, say, the Carnegie days, and if you think that's what it should look like, get in a time machine and go back to the gilded age. Please. While your eight year old daughter works from sunup to sundown with your wife at the coat factory, you'll spend sixteen hours a day seven days a week mining iron ore with your ten year old son. You'll live in a company town where you're paid peanuts in what are essentially coupons that aren't accepted anywhere in the world except that specific company town. Meanwhile, Andrew Carnegie gets to make real money selling the steel you break your back mining for over a hundred hours a week. And he gets a fuck ton of it, too. Just consider yourself lucky your wife didn't die from a postpartum infection because the doctors didn't wash their hands.

Yes, it is not what it was in those days, and it should never be that way again. American-made steel is still, by and large, a pretty healthy industry. They're doing fine. The real whiners are the filthy rich owners who want to squeeze every nickel and dime out of everything. So they're happy to act in protectionist ways that maybe prop up the industry in the short run, but makes everything more expensive in the long run. They don't care. They know we need these metals for basic shit in our lives. We'll buy them no matter what they cost.

Finally, the rights you have as a worker today are written in blood. And now, the government we the dopes have elected is working hard to bleach and torch them. People - lots of em - died fighting for what little we have today. And if you think we're whiners for clinging onto those rights so the richest people in the world get to sleep on a mattress stuffed with a couple fewer hundred dollar bills, maybe it's time to learn your fucking history.

  • The leopards are eating everyone's faces, including mine. While this is usually deadly to others, I'll be fine. I'm willing to take the gamble for everyone as a whole that if enough of their faces are eaten, things will be better long-term. The whiners need to grow a spine and let the leopards eat because the payoff will be worth it.

  • Bud, my car is older than you and has driven enough to circle the globe ten times. You're really stretching the definition of "extended" here.

But, you know, if y'all wanna pay to repaint it, I won't say no lmao

  • They got 92% of his tariff money. By the way, if China doesn't buy our exported food, they'll get it from somewhere else. And once you lose a buyer, it's hard to lure them back. They have deals and negotiations and contracts with other nations. They're not going to just break those.

Maybe instead of jacking up the price because you're a racist prick, maybe consider not losing your biggest repeat customers.

  • Oh, I know they're not connected to the internet. It was a joke. And it turned out her whole family was kind of a bunch of culty Christians. Like, the kind of people who would shout gibberish and call it speaking in tongues. She was a nice girl, but getting to know her family was an...experience. And it totally explained some things lol
