as alive as you need me to be

  • Correct. Yes.

... But also with a lot of other perks and some downsides... if you are willing to consider a different paradigm for a pc build.

    I say: Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.

    I present to you....

... the Minisforum BD 795i SE.

    https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-motherboard

    https://www.amazon.com/MINISFORUM-Motherboard-BD795i-SE-PCIe4-0/dp/B0DQ8WXMKP

ITX Mobo + soldered on AMD 7945hx processor, outperforms by a significant margin any standard cpu+mobo combo you could get for the current price, which is under $400 pre tax.

So thats a mobo, high powered labtop AM4 cpu, that uses ddr5 sodimm ram.

Oh and you can just slot any ole normal GPU into its PCIe x16 v5.0 slot, its got two standard SSD M2 2280 gen 4 slots you can put your existing SSD(s) in.

There you go, for your consideration, there's your upgrade/sidegrade path, or your framework for just a new build, given that GPUs now basically cost as much or more than ... everything else in a pc combined.

    ........

Pop out your old mobo, this thing is ITX so it'll probably fit in your old case, though that isn't guaranteed.

    Grab 32gb (2x16) of 5200/5400/5600 sodimm ddr5 ram for roughly $90 to $110.

(You could go as high as 2x48gb = 96gb but frankly 95% of people will be a ok with 32gb)

Sell your now apparently appreciating in value standard form ddr4 ram.

Grab a noctua 120mm nf-f12 pwm fan for $20, or some equivalent from your preferred fan company, slap that on the massive built in cpu heatspreader, you're good to go.

Sell old cpu heatsink/fan or aio loop.

You may lose the ability to run... an extensive argb case fan setup without some finagling on that front, but who cares, you wont need all of them, this is a very energy and heat efficient cpu.

If you've got some kind of nest of internal archive HDDs, yeah, that may be a bit of a problem too, but realistically, not too many people do that, and you can put an internal HDD into a ~$20 enclosure and just turn it into an external hardrive, something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/X-MEDIA-XM-EN3451-BK-3-5-Inch-SATA-Enclosure/dp/B00ARNCYEU

Oh and also switching to this kind of paradigm, paired with say a non XT AMD 9070, this'll do basically all gaming you could want at 1440p, and will almost certainly substantially lower your total setup power draw... if you're maybe also worried about just general rising energy prices.

    Which you probably should be.

You can also now consider just downsizing your rig's case, and power supply, to a portable ITX form factor, or an mATX form factor, should the idea of your PC not weighing 60+ pounds appeal to you.

There are a good number of ITX cases that will fit most full size GPUs, some via a riser cable, some not even needing one.

  • Fucking yeah man, any set of walls with semi decent insulation and semi decent roof waaaaaay beats trying to sleep in your only set of clothes or a sleeping bag or a tent... during a fucking heatwave or blizzard or downpour or windstorm or w/e.

Full time camping outside like that is... usually something most people can only conceive of as what EXTREME survivalists who DRINK THEIR OWN PISS .... on TV... do.

Uh, nope, no thats just 24/7/365 life when you're homeless.

Well, minus the piss drinking part, that's not a good idea lol.

Like I legit have diagnosed PTSD from the experience, as well as, you know, aforementioned crippling injuries.

Thankfully I've been housed for a while now and have been working on handling both of those, and have been making good progress on both... but oh holy shit the number of days and nights I nearly died from one thing or another....phew, yeah.

Lots of people I met along the way... they did die, I was almost always the only nearby person with any halfway decent first aid/trauma response/OD response knowledge, did my best to help what I could... often wasn't enough.

  • Oh I'm sorry you interpreted what I said as 'attacking every level of this', seems like this issue is a bit of a touchy subject for you?

Its ok, as a formerly homeless person, I am quite used to my perspective offending people by reminding them of their privelege and them being very insecure about that.

Also, lol at the outright command you have given me.

Nah, I'll say whatever the fuck I want, cry to mods or block me if you don't like that.

  • Didn't say I was, but clearly mass homelessness constitutes an emergency, and emergencies tend to legitimate, you know, emergency measures of some kind.

Both from the perspective of the squatter and society more broadly.

Without attempting to single handedly devise a comprehensive set of policy reforms to solve homelessness...

Only gonna get worse if nobody does anything that actually works to alleviate the problem.

    ......

Also, what specifically do you mean by fire egress for a bedroom?

I live in a studio apartment.

    I am currently crippled.

In the event of a fire, my exit options are hobbling out of the single door with crutches or a cane, then slowly moving down some stairs.... or falling a couple stories out of a window.

Yeah, no elevator here. Not ADA compliant. Can't afford much on disability alone.

Seems like this guy could probably shimmy out of that crawl space faster than I could hobble down some stairs, and I know cuz some dipshit tripped the alarm at 2 am a few months back and it took me 15 minutes to suit up in braces and then actually get outside the building.

Reason my building isn't ADA compliant is because its an old motel, thats been hastily converted into doing just normal long term rentals... as a kind of emergency measure, toward housing those down on their luck, when housing prices are insane.

Would I prefer to live in an ADA compliant dwelling?

Sure, but I even more strongly prefer to not be homeless because nobody allowed this hasty motel -> apartment conversion to happen, because of fire codes, and I can't afford anywhere that is fully up to code.

  • I know.

I also know what I said.

Its more livable than being homeless.

Now this person has a $75k bail, and a or more of a criminal record, so the cycle will continue.

  • Looks more livable than being homeless to me.

  • Goats

    Jump
  • the screaming goat sound clip, but with helium

  • Isn't managing brand awareness and reputation... you know, a fundamental part of running basically just most businesses with large consumer bases?

Gee, its almost like these people with 'executive' or 'president' or 'head' somewhere in their job titles are all fucking morons who are bad at their jobs, by their own description and metrics they use to describe them!

The solution isn't to replace those particular people.

The problem is not those particular people.

The problem is a wildly unbalanced and codified system of power dynamics.

The solution is a radical restructuring of for profit corporations into democratic worker cooperatives of some kind where workers elect their leaders.

Unions, as currently implemented in the US, are generally laughably useless in terms of... you know, actually doing the things they are supposed to do.

This shit will never end and hypercapitalism will drive us all into early graves unless we do something a bit more more radical.

'Radical' meaning: To address the root cause, instead of the effects.

... And for any liberals reading, no, no the oligarchs will not just agree to do this after a passionate speech or 'insightful' op-ed in the Atlantic.

You need to have what is called leverage.

In this context, that means a credible threat of violence.

One of course hopes this threat has to only ever remain as a threat.

Sorry, I didn't write these rules, human history did.

  • Yeah thats big 'old man yells at clouds' vibes.

Its not me that could be wrong, no, its the children.

Kids have different body language norms than me?

Pff, that's stupid, my illogical feelings and inaccurate, non-universal heuristics are what's important here.

  • Its almost like neurotypicals just think they know what 'normal' body language is, when in actuality they all disagree about almost all of it, each have their own plethora of weird quirks and ideas, and its just that they assume their standard is correct, because they hardly ever consciously, actively think about or analyze body language.

  • Yep, I am like this too.

How do you effectively promote spyware?

Make it addictive like a drug, make it a core element of common culture, and most importantly, make it have some kind of socializing network effect that generates a knee jerk disgust in normies when anyone dares to question its widespread and regular use.

It is extremely funny to me when someone asks me to install say discord or insta or whatsapp, and I say I don't use them for security and privacy reasons...

Then I ask them to install signal, and they say 'I'm not going to install a whole app just for you.'

Apparently entirely unaware of, oblivious that they literally just asked me to do that.

    whooooosh

Then they get angry and begin to babble on about some kind of idiot nonsense about how either I don't know how to do digital security or how its just impossible so why try, or both.

If I mention that I literally did handle PII in corporate databases and thus do actually understand a decent chunk of cybersecurity...

They tend to become emotional and defensive.

Try to explain anything in detail to them and they have a bunch of sophomoric / dunning krueger instant retorts and thought terminating cliches, because they don't want to listen or possibly learn anything, they want to justify their digital drug addiction.

Oh well, works as an idiot filter for me.

    Suffer no fools.

  • Hah, my mangled attempt at correct pastry pronounciation is something like:

    Kwah-san(t).

I am sure that is a bit butchered by proper French standards though, haha!

Unfortunately, if you try to pronounce loan words properly, by the rules of the language they come from, most Americans (very wrongly imo) consider this to be you acting pretentious.

    On that note:

I have spent a good amount of time doing karate and so have spoken with a good dreal of native Japanese speakers...

    Karaoke is not carry-oh-kee.

    It is kah-rah-oh-ke.

    Karate is not kara-tee.

    It is kah-rah-tay.

... I frankly have no fucking clue how we managed to fuck up karaoke as bad as we did.

  • Then you would be using a different term than 'Millennial', or you would be using that term... as a loan word, from a culture that was/is deeply influential across the world, and was also massively affected by 9/11.

  • Yep, the baby boom happened in many places... the term 'baby boom' and 'baby boomer' and then 'boomer' are very much US-centric if you look through newspapers, academic publications.

Also... you're telling me your French speaking parents referred to them as 'baby boomers', as in... a loan word, from English, as opposed to something that might more naturally arise from French?

    bébé d'expansion?

Granted, I do not speak French, that particular guess may be wildly unrealistic in some way, but I would think that general linguistic and etymylogical concepts apply generally.

    https://www.etymonline.com/fr/word/baby%20boom

Assuming google translate is doing a decent job of translating that to English for me, I am fairly confident this literally says the French term "baby-boom(er)" is a loan term, from English, specifically from the US.

Anyway, I am not saying that people should not be free to use or adapt terms from other languages, that would be stupid and also impossible to enforce, especially stupid coming from an English speaker such as myself, with English essentially being a bastard mutant step child of at least three different languages smashing into each other.

I would be unable to go to the karaoke bar, sing a song about a latent gestalt consciousness, grab a bahn mi to much on, and then further discuss the relative 'lingua franca' status of varying languages of the world, all whilst doing my best to stave off ennui.

What I am saying is that criticizing my US Centric definition of a US Centric term on the grounds that the definition itself is too US Centric... that is stupid.

    .........

Is 'millennial' a commonly used generational cohort word present in many languages right now?

    Of course.

However... I would argue my definition still holds.

If you can remember 9/11 happening, generally, you are some kind of a millenial, you would identify as such, you would use that term.

Yep, 9/11 happened to the US.

And it was the biggest news story on the planet at the time.

Governments around the world reached out to the US with formal announcements of sympathy.

Newscasters and print media ran the story for days, weeks, in many countries.

It was a pretty big deal, the world hegemon having its financial center directly attacked.

Markets all the world freaked out, to varying degrees.

And I could casually argue that generally, roughly, though of course not as directly traumatizing to non USAmericans, it was a bigger deal in countries that were culturally/economically connected to the US, and thus inhabitants of those countries were/are more likely to later use a fairly direct equivalent of 'millennial' as a generational cohort term... as a loan word, from our media's intial popularization of the term, to decry our avocado toast habits and whichever stagnant and poorly operated line of shitty franchise restaurants we are apparently responsible for murdering.

Why not use the local language word for 'millenium' as a basis, instead of adopting one from English?

But to further nuance this, I am sure you would point out that the English word millennial is of French origin, and you would be correct.

So sure, this obviously makes more sense as a wholly and truly French word, we English speakers did after all, more or less borrow something like 70% of our vocabulary from French.

But then we can refer back to my actual proposed definition:

I bet you do actually remember 9/11 being on the TV, in the papers, being discussed, to at least degree, if you are a millennial, who speaks French, and was roughly 5 years old or older, in France, when it happened.

If I am wrong about that, please let me know.

  • Easier yes, but also more confusing, causing terms to lose specificity and accuracy.

I am the kind of person that complains every time I see people incorrectly using any term adopted from another language, culture, academic field, whatever.

So... yes, I can and do complain about things lile that.

    ......

To pick a random example: Almost no one uses the term 'black swan event' properly.

Its from Nassim Taleb, meant to describe... a kind of risk of an event that would have been impossible to predict, due to said risk being completely unprecedented, outside of the possibility of conceiving.

But, most people just use 'black swan event' to mean... a thing that is fairly uncommon, but certainly has been studied, has a precedent, has known situations in which it arises.

Thats not a black swan event. Thats a predictable but uncommon event, not a wholly unprecedented and totally unpredictable event.

  • The term Millenial orginally and specifically, academically and etymylogically in general usage... refers to generational cohorts of USAmericans.

As does Baby Boomers. As does Gen X.

You can maybe make an argument than Gen Z / Zoomers and Gen A / Alpha are more globalized, due to the massive proliferation and normalization of digital culture... but they are again still based off of a naming convention schema describing USAmericans.

    So yes, I am using a US-centric definition for a US-centric term.

If ya'll want to come up with your own terms, I'm all for it, the US has long had and still does have waaaaayyy too much influence over many aspects of general internet culture, global culture in general, the other economies and societies of the world, etc.

  • So do I, friend, so do I.

  • Yep, we throw away, as USAsians... what, 40% of our food, with our insane JIT logistics/business model?

Uh yeah turns out globalized JIT is a highly efficient paradigm, in the sense of maximizing profits...

... But it is also extremely wasteful, fragile and shatters easily... the Trump tariffs and surrounding uncertainty, and mass destruction of the hierarchically lowest, but also most essential, foundational rung of the food production system, migrant labor...

That's basically just swinging at the knees of this paradigm with sledge hammers.

  • Yeah, the only logical way I see to evaluate this, assuming these people are not 100% comprised of totally incompetent, koolaid drinking morons...

Is that they are more or less deciding to formally enact and massively ramp up 'economic sacrifice zones'.

Its Bob Page from the intro to Deus Ex:

    "Why contain it?"

    .........

The insurance companies are already abadoning much of the US Deep Red South.

There is no real solution to that other than massively tax the wealthy and corporations, do massive government directed work and projects and funding schemes... which they obviously will not do, because that is ideologically antithetical to them.

    So, instead:

Criminalize poverty, go back to mass slave labor, and just generally encourage and enable everyone to kill themselves and each other in a kind of laissez faire eugenecist free for all... as you squeeze the last drops out of areas that are basically guaranteed to be Mad Max in decade or two.

Shoring things up would require a lot of investment and not the greatest short term ROI, therefore, by C Suite Capitalist logic, uh, just let that branch of the company wither on the vine... maybe the smarter ones will manage to gather enough resources to escape and go be more productive as some other employee elsewhere.

    Capitalism is a death cult.

    EDIT:

Further evidence of this kind of mindset:

    https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-04-20/lancaster-mayor-calls-for-homeless-to-get-free-fentanyl

The mayor of Lancaster, Rex Parris, has ignited a controversy after musing during a council meeting that one approach to homelessness would be to “give them free fentanyl … all the fentanyl they want.”

    ...

He said that he didn’t think anyone had taken his comments literally, but that he did not regret them. In the interview, he said he wished for “a purge” of homeless people.

    {"Give them all fentanyl so they will just kill themselves."}
