as alive as you need me to be

  • They're We're hurting the wrong people...

  • You have defined conservatism.

  • Stop giving me adorable ideas! lol

  • Ah, yeah, just the mouth, that makes more sense.

    Ever see Equilibrium?

The uh, dear leader... just straight up is a digital construction, got a fake voice and all that too?

... Too bad gun kata would never work at all in real life...

  • I know we just recently got into a bit of tussle elsewhere, but I think I mostly agree with you here.

The uh, the 'morph-cut', when his hands shift and kinda melt?

Look above his head when that happens.

The lighting and shadow on the trees in the background changes.

Its all one way before that happens, and its all another way after that happens.

... I think he literally stroked out, while they were filming this, thats why the morph cut is there, and if some body wanted to try to model the scene, the oval office, geopositioned right, with the sun, they could probably estimate how long it was between these two shots they merged together... or timeskipped between.

I don't think his face is completely fake, I think it may have some kind of... correction applied to it, to try to minimize the droopiness of ... what you can see in his face today, from the 9/11 memorial.

Sorta like how and instagram filter morphs your face... and a frame stabilization effect tries to keep objects centered and just boink the frame itself around...

Something like a face stabilization effect, if that makes any sense.

  • Look up what happened to the KPD and SPD in Germany after the Reichstag Fire.

    That happens.

  • .... aaaaaaaand I have a new base image for an IWW wildcat flag/emblem.

  • I mean, frankly, I agree with you ... but there are tons of other games in other genres of style and gameplay....that are also under $70 bucks, at or close to that $20 mark, that are pretty damn good.

They may not be as meteorically popular as Silksong...

But the point of the OP image is that... you do not in fact need a AAA production budget and AAA 'graphics quality' and MTX and FOMO and alo that garbage... to be able to have a successful game.

That you can in fact have a more modest yet also more focused approach, and create a break-out hit.

The point here is not 'Silksong popular!'

The point is 'Silksong proves that AAA development paradigms and business practices are ludicrously wasteful and not mandatory; there will always be other ways to be a successful game creator.'

  • Unfortunately I am currently too crippled to be able to handle more intensive/time consuming meal prep, but yes absolutely for most people, it probably makes more sense to start from raw beans.

Also shout out to peanut butter.

....real peanut butter, that isn't mostly sugar.

Very good source of protein and... I think also complex carbs?

Also also: Maybe consider a basic resealable cannery set of jars, so that you can store things a while, works for storing way more than just preserving jam or what not, you can use em as cups, ain't made of plastic but they can be used as just verticaly oriented tupperware.

  • I am just a single persom, and have been micro stockpiling a surplus 5lb bag of rice, 6 or so cans of refried beans, about 10 or so cans of soup, 24 instant ramen packs...

... each month, since I think March.

Plan to keep doing so as long as I can, and then start literally eating into it when shit gets insane, only buying bits of protein and veggies to throw into the rice cooker/stew pot.

Fucking Great Depression 2.0, this time with live streaming rofl, at least until our infrastructure starts also completely crapping out.

Might be worth it to stock up on some duct tape, get a basic set of home repair tools and a basic medkit if you don't already have one, also maybe a water purifier straw, sewing kit and patches...

...and if you can swing it, some kind of backup battery that can be charged via either wall outlet or solar panels, in the event of grid outage and you still want to keep a mini fridge going or at least have some access to AC vs none.

Also, get a mylar blanket. If you lose power, those things can be taped up to a window to help bounce more heat away from them and keep the heat down... or used as an actual heat retaining blanket when its super cold.

  • I 100% agree that CBT should basically just be taught in schools as part of a kind of fundamental 'how to be a human with thoughts and feelings' class, lol, before moving onto 'how to do critical analysis' and 'how do you know what you "know" ' class.

Our brains literally are heuristic-driven hallucination generators.

We need to make an effort to understand how they function and why and where they often break down, and how to manage their troublesome quirks...

... otherwise we will just revert to impulsive superstition in an incressingly overwhelmingly complex world, which will then guarantee our being forced into draconian social structures to more brutally manage our unexamined foolishness.

Our hardware has advanced beyond the default configs of our wetware, and Sagan's nightmare is becoming more and more realized every single day.

  • Sure, fine, but this is exactly, precisely how misinformation spreads.

People who lack the sufficient knowledge set to evaluate a complex and technical claim present what appears to a layman to be a plausible idea as being roughly equivalent to the ideas that actual experts have, another brand name worth considering in the free market of ideas, more or less just another neutral option, with no strong feelings either way.

This is (unintentionally) subversive, because it elevates a ludicrous notion to a degree of plausibility that it absolutely does not deserve.

I do not mean to attack you as a person or say that you should feel bad or anything like that, I am simply here to be the counterforce, to try to explain how and why this is very silly.

Part of doing that effectively is crafting an engaging narrative.

Making punny jokes and being a bit vitriolic is engaging for other readers; again, not meant to attack or demean you as a person, but meant to mock this specific notion/idea/"theory".

After all, at the end of the day, we could stand to be a little more capable of intellectual humility, eh?

There's absolutely no problem with being wrong sometimes, understanding when why and how one can be or is wrong is how people learn, which should be celebrated, imo.

  • I know, I am just providing an example of another thing that is misunderstood but not 'false'.

  • No, no, no, I am an econometrician, this Blair Fix person is an 'enthusiast of economics' who actually doesn't know how statistics or data modelling works.

Their whole blog post boils down to them not liking the format the graph is presented in.

I can assure you this a common way to visualize this kind of a data set.

When this Blair person presents their own 'test' later in the post, they are literally making shit up, they did not perform any test, they just generated random noise and then went 'see it kinda looks the same!'

Were they serious about this ... analysis approach, they would have compared their random noise to the actual dunning krueger data set and then done actual statistical tests to see if the dk set was statistically significantly different than a battery of say 1000 runs of their statistical noise generation, and to what extent it was.

They did not do this, at all.

They then cite papers from no name colleges no one has ever heard of that basically just argue that a histogram is 'the right way to present this', even though that completely destroys any visual concept of differentiating between where ones actual ability level is vs where one estimates it to be, that just flattens it to 'look at this psuedo normal distribution of how many people are wrong by how much', again with no reference to their actual competency level as a factor in to what degree they overestimate themselves.

You've fallen for a random shit poster who shit posts on a blog instead of tiktok or instagram or reddit or WSJ/WaPo Op-Eds.

You have been bamboozeled not by lies, not by damned lies, but by an idiot attempting to do statistics.

    .........

If you wanted to maybe better visually portray the DK data, you coukd have the original graph, and then another graph, a bar graph, that shows the % difference between actual and perceived competency for each quartile.

And that would look like this:

(I am doing the digital equivalent of a napkin drawing here, from a phone, this is broadly accurate, but not precise.)

The lowest competency quartile believes they score at about 55th percentile when they actually score at about 10th percentile, so they overestimate themselves by about 450%.

2nd quartile; actual score is about 35 ptile, estimated score is 60 ptile, so they overestimate themselves by about 70%.

3rd quartile; actual score is about 60 ptile, estimated score is about 70 ptile, so they overestimate themselves by about 17%.

4th quartile; actual score is about 85 ptile, estimated score is about 70 ptile, so they overestimate_themselves by about negative 20%

So, there you go, you have a bar chart with 4 bars.

    1st is 45 units tall,

    2nd is 7,

    3rd is 1.7,

4th is -2, going under the x axis.

Vertical height represents the magnitude of overestimation of a quartile's actual competency.

That is to say, the dumbest 25% of people think they are 4.5x more competent than they actually are, in terms of comparing themselves to all people broadly, whereas the smartest 25% of people actually think they are 0.8x as competent as they actually are.

This effect at the top quartile is roughly otherwise known as 'impostor syndrome', another thing that is well studied and definitely real.

But the main thing that should be visually striking from this kind of presentation is that dumb people, that bottom quartile, are literally in another order of magnitude of overestimating their abilities, they are in fact so wildly off that the rest of the graph is basically just noise around the x axis in comparison, they are in fact so stupid that they have no idea how stupid they are.

For a real world example case of this, go visit the Oval Office.

  • That is not the same thing as being disproven though.

Thats like saying 'trauma bonding' isn't real...

...because most idiots on TikTok incorrectly think it means bonds generated through shared struggles.

As opposed to what it actually means, which is basically when someone normalizes being traumatized in an abusive relationship with someone who is very manipulative by way of this other person generally offering only negative reinforcement nearly all of the time, with tiny morsels of occasional positive reinforcement handed out only after absurd feats from the 'trauma bonded' person.

  • Match of the century:

Unwanted children vs hordes of feral boars / superpigs.

  • Correct. Yes.

... But also with a lot of other perks and some downsides... if you are willing to consider a different paradigm for a pc build.

    I say: Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.

    I present to you....

... the Minisforum BD 795i SE.

ITX Mobo + soldered on AMD 7945hx processor, outperforms by a significant margin any standard cpu+mobo combo you could get for the current price, which is under $400 pre tax.

So thats a mobo, high powered labtop AM4 cpu, that uses ddr5 sodimm ram.

Oh and you can just slot any ole normal GPU into its PCIe x16 v5.0 slot, its got two standard SSD M2 2280 gen 4 slots you can put your existing SSD(s) in.

There you go, for your consideration, there's your upgrade/sidegrade path, or your framework for just a new build, given that GPUs now basically cost as much or more than ... everything else in a pc combined.

    ........

Pop out your old mobo, this thing is ITX so it'll probably fit in your old case, though that isn't guaranteed.

    Grab 32gb (2x16) of 5200/5400/5600 sodimm ddr5 ram for roughly $90 to $110.

(You could go as high as 2x48gb = 96gb but frankly 95% of people will be a ok with 32gb)

Sell your now apparently appreciating in value standard form ddr4 ram.

Grab a noctua 120mm nf-f12 pwm fan for $20, or some equivalent from your preferred fan company, slap that on the massive built in cpu heatspreader, you're good to go.

Sell old cpu heatsink/fan or aio loop.

You may lose the ability to run... an extensive argb case fan setup without some finagling on that front, but who cares, you wont need all of them, this is a very energy and heat efficient cpu.

If you've got some kind of nest of internal archive HDDs, yeah, that may be a bit of a problem too, but realistically, not too many people do that, and you can put an internal HDD into a ~$20 enclosure and just turn it into an external hardrive, something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/X-MEDIA-XM-EN3451-BK-3-5-Inch-SATA-Enclosure/dp/B00ARNCYEU

Oh and also switching to this kind of paradigm, paired with say a non XT AMD 9070, this'll do basically all gaming you could want at 1440p, and will almost certainly substantially lower your total setup power draw... if you're maybe also worried about just general rising energy prices.

    Which you probably should be.

You can also now consider just downsizing your rig's case, and power supply, to a portable ITX form factor, or an mATX form factor, should the idea of your PC not weighing 60+ pounds appeal to you.

There are a good number of ITX cases that will fit most full size GPUs, some via a riser cable, some not even needing one.

  • Fucking yeah man, any set of walls with semi decent insulation and semi decent roof waaaaaay beats trying to sleep in your only set of clothes or a sleeping bag or a tent... during a fucking heatwave or blizzard or downpour or windstorm or w/e.

Full time camping outside like that is... usually something most people can only conceive of as what EXTREME survivalists who DRINK THEIR OWN PISS .... on TV... do.

Uh, nope, no thats just 24/7/365 life when you're homeless.

Well, minus the piss drinking part, that's not a good idea lol.

Like I legit have diagnosed PTSD from the experience, as well as, you know, aforementioned crippling injuries.

Thankfully I've been housed for a while now and have been working on handling both of those, and have been making good progress on both... but oh holy shit the number of days and nights I nearly died from one thing or another....phew, yeah.

Lots of people I met along the way... they did die, I was almost always the only nearby person with any halfway decent first aid/trauma response/OD response knowledge, did my best to help what I could... often wasn't enough.

  • Oh I'm sorry you interpreted what I said as 'attacking every level of this', seems like this issue is a bit of a touchy subject for you?

Its ok, as a formerly homeless person, I am quite used to my perspective offending people by reminding them of their privelege and them being very insecure about that.

Also, lol at the outright command you have given me.

Nah, I'll say whatever the fuck I want, cry to mods or block me if you don't like that.
