  • How can I survive off of that, if they're out of stock for half the year? ;-;

  • DNA is also damaged sometimes just by chance. Even in perfect conditions, with no UV, reactive molecules, etc., there will be errors and this is sometimes how cancer happens, just by chance (it's also how evolution happens, so).

Editing DNA in-vivo (in a living organism) would be tricky, because one: we don't actually know what all that DNA does. Some of it seems to have multiple functions. and some of it is just... ¯(ツ)_/¯. I mean, we've only just recently (2025 i thk) created a map of the entire human genome and, again, we don't know what most of it does. IIRC there's an entire group of DNA that was, until recently, known as 'trash' DNA because everyone thought it didn't do anything, but it turns out it has important regulatory functions. So using CRISPR in such a way across an entire living organism might kill the organism. There's also the issue of how to use CRISPR in such a widespread way, as most gene editing is done in really small test tubes with micrograms of the enzyme. Some people have proposed using a modified virus, as that's pretty much what viruses do, and of course that has it's own issues because 'new' viral particles that were created by the infected cell have different DNA to hide from he host immune system. So administering a treatment like that might accidentally create a new strain of infectious virus, even if the researchers are really, really careful (Life, uh, finds a way).

Also, I seem to recall that there are some issues with CRISPR only being able to edit strands of DNA that are x long, and doing anything longer would require another enzyme that doesn't exist or hasn't been found. I forget most of that part of my micro lecture tho.

DNA research is really slow, mostly because culturing cells is really tricky. Sure you can get them to stay alive, but to see them actually in action is difficult as you would have to supply the right concentration of certain molecules over a specific time and make sure those don't react with other molecules that will produce toxic molecules that kill the cell. Also some of these molecules are light reactive so experiments have to be done in the dark and preferably at 37°C. In short, it's really difficult to study DNA because the necessary conditions to make it do it's thing are extremely difficult to replicate in the lab.

I'm just a student though, so if there is, by chance, a researcher in this forum that would like to correct me please do so.

*ALSO, if you really want to increase the life span of humanity, everyone should start having babies as late as humanly possible. There will be genetic issues with the offspring, but those will eventually be ironed out as more reproduction happens at a later stage in life thus, naturally increasing the human lifespan viva la evolution.

  • Yes.

  • swanky👌

  • lol fuck you

  • In Canada. Worse financially, but socially/mentally we're better off. My parents have none of the tools I have to deal with shit on an emotional level, they instead just shove it in a box and try to forget about it. This is how they raised me, but thank fuck for the internet and people I met that know better.

Well, all of this ignores the destruction and probably death of the Earths environment which has such an overarching presence it had to be ignored to provide a meaningful answer.

*I suppose ones financial situation isn't tied to which generation they are, but to how much emotional damage their parents inflicted (which is correlated to socio-economic status IIRC). IMO, if my parents weren't so permanently fucked up I would've had the mental wherewithal to attend University at an earlier age so I likely would be graduated already. Would probably still be just as fucked tho.

  • I have a cheap, but really good bamboo cutting board from the dollar store and a tiny one from ikea that I use more often (because my kitchen is tinnnyyy). I also bought my knife from ikea a decade ago and I hone it before every use with an old steel I found in a thrift shop that was made in Sheffield. I say this because it seems to be better then any of the steels I bought new from any other store.

  • Trial and error. Lot's of meals that I just... forced down. Learned what I did wrong and changed it. But well, I don't really cook specific recipes, mostly I just boil things and know when to add stuff and what spices might go good with it, if any.

I'm happy other people had their parents to teach them but my parents mostly made stuff from boxes like hamburger helper and kraft dinner. Then they had all that free time to themselves to watch tv and get drunk.

  • I don't think most people will suddenly indulge their creative side, more likely they'll just behave much as they would if they had a day off, at least for the first year or so (video games, pizza, alcohol, etc.). After that, who knows. Kind of like someone's just retired, except for the whole population at relatively the same time... like no idea what would happen there lol. Definitely a societal shift at a massive scale.

I'm quite certain about one thing though: we'll get a hell of a lot more dank memes.

  • I speak for the plankton :(

  • IMO our population is already too high to be sustainable without capitalism grinding people down to survive off their blood and suffering. We would need to heavily automate most of the labour intensive industries like mining and especially farming; however, I don't think this will happen any time soon, partially in thanks to how the current system maintains the status quo and is very much regressive in that respect. There's a steep curve to get over to achieve this technologically, and I don't think we're that close to implementing it on such a massive scale to be effective.

I know of a few companies that are working on these issues; like one company that uses special suction cups on robotic arms to pick fruit and maybe humanoid robots will become rugged enough for continuous outdoor labour but from what I see and the amount of people working on this issue, I don't think we're even close.

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death.

*Especially because AIs are too inaccurate and energy intensive to be useful... it was a good idea but in practice, it's basically useless.

*Also I don't believe it's human nature to exploit other people, just how the current system works I guess. Human nature is picking berries, hunting animals, taking your kid fishing and just chilling with your community. I think your idea about human nature is skewed because very few people are able to experience a healthy community.

  • Dead. Life on Earth will be nothing more complex then algae.

  • I get that rejection thing, some friends and I were listening to spotify and they shoved in their AI "music" into our playlist, and after a bit everyone was confused on wtf it was... but yeah, hard to describe it. Like it's just wrong or gross even. Like you've just touched a wet rag that's been stuck in drain pipe and for some reason it's warm.

  • Fuck. The birds are fucking.

  • ITT: People that need to find a good therapist... :(

  • Didn't know that was today until I read this lol. No biggy to me. I'm just the kind of person that likes to be alone.

  • That... doesn't sound like actual therapy. That sounds like someone trying to make money off of people by slapping a Therapy sticker on weird, corporate community hours. In my province, Therapists are licensed and have to have a related degree to practice, it's easier to do then becoming a psychologist, but you still have to go to school for it. You can't just call yourself a therapist and start talking to people about their problems, or asking a fucking chatbot about peoples problems... that's so awful and I'm sorry you experienced that.
