  • We are the same age and I had my first analog wristwatch in 1st grade. When my niece was 4 in '86 or so I taught her to read a clock. Weird world, guess it's not all about age.

  • That's a choice to be stupid. When I was a child I was frustrated as hell I couldn't read the signs Bugs Bunny held up, so I was chomping at the bit to learn. And these kids see "circle clocks" and just figure, "Meh. Guess it will always be a mystery."

  • People's perception of risk blows my mind. I know, we didn't evolve to calculate risk in such a wildly complex world, but damn. And it's not just violence and crime, it's everything. I don't know how some of these people manage going outdoors.

    Most of it is the media and internet. I often remind people on here, "You only heard that story because it's not normal." Dude goes nuts at the family reunion, shoots 4 people? National news. Dude wipes a family of 4 off the interstate? Maybe a blurb on the local news.

    Young people: "The bottle cap liner is giving me microplastics."

    Old people: "The minoroties are rampaging!"

  • Pirated? You may not be aware, but you can download Windows ISOs straight from Microsoft. The second you boot your machine and register it, the license is permanent and you can install Windows forever.

    Can you see how insane that is from my perspective? Installed Windows 10 on this SSD 8-years ago. Moved that SSD through 3 or 4 PCs and upgraded to 11, no problems.

    Then there was a very similar thread about people trying to switch to Linux:

    Been running Linux servers for 20-years. I never use MS unless there's a compelling reason, IIS or some bullshit. But the Linux desktop is still a clusterfuck.

    "OK. I can make Windows go with a base ISO and some PowerShell. No ads, no horseshit, start menu is flawless."

  • No one's convincing me Americans are so broke when they use apps like this. It's like the mid-price grocery down the street being bumped off by the new place, most expensive in town and 1-mile further for most people.

    Now our second Aldi has moved into the mid-price store's building. Aldi's mostly empty while the most expensive store is jammed SRO. For context, this is a small redneck suburb of a poor city, not exactly bougie.

  • The main benefit of Prime is savings on shipping. Without it, Amazon's far too expensive. Maybe they slow shipping speed for regular customers, but seems like they'd shoot themselves in the foot. Who pays extra shipping and waits twice as long? In any case, if you're going to use Amazon, you're all but forced to buy Prime. Which is fine by me. I can't afford the 20-mile roundtrip to town and the extra price on other sites.

    Of course this is a thread about software where people pay $40 to get cold McDonald's delivered, so maybe consumers are even dumber than I thought.

  • Used the free version, don't know why I updated to paid, WORTH IT ($5). I'll never not have a BT adapter ($4) on my car computer and Torque on hand. Worth it just to read check engine lights.

    Wife's car occasionally throws, and sometimes clears, a minor emissions error, kills the cruise control. The passenger can reset it rolling down the interstate and we're back in business.
