  • Cops are swamped with this kinda thing. If they don't see the crime, such as the brother's assault outlined above, and the victims won't talk or press charges, then it's "he said, she said", useless to pursue. BUT, they can take a report.

    There's been more than once in my life where the cops later asked, "Why didn't you call us?!" Having said that, for many reasons I hesitate to involve police unless uncontrollable violence is going down in the moment.

  • For consumer use, I don't see much difference in Office and LibreOffice. For business, Excel is the killer app, can't do without it, but individuals can adapt pretty easy.

    Load LibreOffice on her machine and let her try it! Leave the defaults to open docs with Office so it doesn't frustrate her.

  • Bet they would be if people put a little effort into fixing them. Now people throw them out at the slightest issue, or just to get another for aesthetic value. Only reason I tossed my old fridge, which was newish, was that I could no longer fight the 4-5 separate issues it had.

  • I dunno. I don't remember people buying new appliances when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. Granted, not something a kid would notice, but my kitchen and my friend's kitchens were unchanging. If this is merely survivorship bias, we lucked out on every major appliance in the house.

    Over 50 years mom only bought 1 of everything except the microwave, which still works, and the washer, which still works. It was a big deal getting a new appliance!

    Also, when I became an adult and had to buy my own shit, the used appliance market wasn't flooded, and certainly not with good stuff. In the past 2 years, my wife and I got a new washer and the nicest fridge I've ever had, $200 each. Hell, I found our nice glass-top stove on the side of the road, barely used, fully functional!

    You're right though, people just throw stuff instead of fixing it. Buddy of mine had a side gig buying and picking up free washers and dryers, made about $600/wk. fixing them in the evening. Didn't even have to keep lots of parts around as there are only 2 different sorts across all domestic units. If I had a garage, I'd be all over this.

  • 54 here. You must have had good gear.

    Not sure our main tube TV needed it much, but later and smaller TVs sure did. Of course the tube TV would blow one and then it was off to the grocery store kiosk to try and find one. Or call the TV repair guy if dad couldn't figure it.

  • Book changed my life in college, but for reasons lemmy will hate.

    Never had a shred of work ethic. Reading that book stunned me. "If this man can persevere through that, why am I such a wuss?"

    Worked hard at every job since, moved up if there was the opportunity to do so. I soon realized that if you kick ass at your job, you can write your own ticket. Even if it's not much more money, or a fat promotion, the least you get is a better schedule, acceptance of fuck ups, or whatever it is you want out of the place.

    Gain skills and experience, quit, acquire new job, rinse and repeat.

    When we moved to Florida 20-years ago, my two friends and I had no family, no jobs, no other friends. One guy started at an oil change place, way below his skill set. He'd work at a place for 6-months or a year, quit when they quit giving him more money, got a better job, rinse and repeat. He finally chilled after 10-years or so and settled into a job as a service manager for a major car dealership, $100K+, probably $150K today.

    We've removed all risk from our children's lives, and then we're dumbfounded that they're scared about stupid shit. Got called "a fucking idiot" on reddit for saying I often skinny dipped in the local creek, and the crowd agreed. Dangerous behavior indeed!

  • Can't believe lemmy hasn't buried you for this comment. I don't have any of the issues I'm told I'm suffering, and I actively look for them when I see articles posted. The circle jerk is strong.

    I suspect most of the hate is people running the factory install of 11 Home from their laptop manufacturer. Pulling the crap out of Windows is about the same effort as adding needed crap to Linux.
