  • There just aren't any good guys in this story.

    Meta and its platforms suck and the world would be a better place without them. People who are claiming online platforms should be held liable for being "addictive" suck, too. Should I be able to successfully sue my Lemmy instance admin too because I like to spend time here too much?

    I'm reminded of my parents limiting my forum time because they thought I (then a preteen) was "addicted" to forums in the mid-2000s. I still don't think they were right about that, and I don't sympathize with people now claiming the equivalent thing about Instagram et al. either.

    yes, and are thereby killing any opportunity for us, the people, to solve the problem ourselves by operating platforms independent from big tech >:( Meta will be able to comply with any regulations governments will ever think of, their business depends on it; fediverse instances meanwhile...

  • Joke's on them, I use an ad blocker, so those 1741 partners can do all the calculations they want about which ads to show me... I won't see those ads anyway. :P

  • Followup question: Is there an overview of which VPNs can be used with third party (FOSS) clients and which not? I don't currently use a VPN except a corporate VPN, but may change that in the future.

  • Huh? I don't know where you get almost any of these ideas from…

    As for myself, I thought of the Internet as a much bigger deal when I was mainly on small independent forums. I've never participated very much on any corporate social media except maybe reddit, but even on reddit I know I am one of millions.

  • Worldwide? Do they consider themselves to be having universal jurisdiction over foreign websites, even if they are blocking Indian users from accessing it?

  • Yeah, well, you know, that question has been around for almost as long as the WWW: Which laws apply on the Internet, and how do you enforce them if they do?

    Lots of politicians would like the answer to be: My country's laws apply to all websites that can be accessed in my country. If they violate them, my country's government should be able to fine them, order ISPs to block access to them, arrest people associated with them, maybe even more…

    But if that's the case, then cannot countries like the PRC, Thailand, Iran, North Korea, etc. also do those things? Can we claim they are doing something illegitimate when they do, when self-described liberal democratic republics do them too? Can the Internet even work at all if everyone constantly has to comply with all countries' laws, most of which they don't know about?

    The business model of mainstream social media companies is that they are ultimately part of the advertising industry. They need some kind of legal presence everywhere that they have customers (advertisers). That legal presence can be fined like any other company, and that is how most laws are currently enforced against them.
