  • I would not do that without first looking into applicable laws regarding legal liability for content and requirements to remove things. Depending on where in the world you are, this can be a minefield.

  • Should that not be the job of a defense attorney? Surely the defendant knew he didn't commit that crime; so how come the defendant didn't look through the documents with his attorney and go "wait, this isn't right"? If not even the defense is competently representing its own interests, no wonder things like this happen.

  • In my country the law is that if there is a crosswalk within a certain distance, 25 meters if I recall, you have to use the crosswalk. Otherwise you are allowed to cross elsewhere after making sure the road is free.

    (How do you know how long 25 meters is? Most trams in my city are 35 meters long, so if an entire tram platform is between the nearest crosswalk and you, it's legal there.)

  • There just aren't any good guys in this story.

    Meta and its platforms suck and the world would be a better place without them. People who are claiming online platforms should be held liable for being "addictive" suck, too. Should I be able to successfully sue my Lemmy instance admin too because I like to spend time here too much?

    I'm reminded of my parents limiting my forum time because they thought I (then a preteen) was "addicted" to forums in the mid-2000s. I still don't think they were right about that, and I don't sympathize with people now claiming the equivalent thing about Instagram et al. either.

    As for myself, I thought of the Internet as a much bigger deal when I was mainly on small independent forums. I've never participated very much on any corporate social media except maybe reddit, but even on reddit I know I am one of millions.
