  • My team has moved to a thing we call "ScrumBan" and it's worked pretty well. There still are 15-min Dailies, and a Review and a Retrospective each Sprint, but we cut almost all meetings that are about sitting around and "planning" tasks (aka awful 7-hour meetings where everyone just zones out and guesses random story point numbers). Instead, tasks are planned and moved to the board on demand and never in the presence of the entire team. It gives everyone so much more time to just focus on their work.

  • It's surprisingly good as a backend language, if you don't really need OOP all that much. The perfect case is probably using it in microservices that only really need to do a bit of data manipulation and some database interfacing.

  • Sometimes different is even better! When I switched to Linux a few months back I didn't anticipate just how much I would like the Gnome desktop environment. Now I sometimes even try flicking down my mouse to switch tabs on my Win11 work pc and get a pang of disappointment when it doesn't work.

  • That is sad. Openly showing trust to the people around you (even if you have to take the first step and give someone the benefit of the doubt) creates the safest, most pleasant communities. Plus it's just a massive hassle and mental strain to distrust everyone all the time.

  • That seems kind of like the standard procedure around here (Germany) too. When you sell something online, the expectation is always that the buyer comes to the sellers house to pick up the item. I've never seen anyone do that "let's meet at this random parking lot" thing americans tend to do.

  • It's the same exact laptop, the tests ran sequentially but were edited so that the video shows them in parallel. Since it's the same hardware in each test and only the OS changes, it's a perfectly fine setup for comparison.

  • I don't like it when websites don't allow me to enter emojis in text boxes (like when naming or tagging things in browser games). It's not even that I do it a lot, I just don't like arbitrary restrictions like that. I know my fellow web devs always get nervous about them causing technical issues, but realistically that really doesn't happen with any modern tech stacks. I've been including emoji input in the test cases for any text input components I program and there's never been any real issue that would warrant not allowing them at all. Even the notorious 10-character 👨🏻‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏻 really doesn't cause problems, you just have to account for the length of it.

  • Yeah, that's what I'm hoping to do with my system too! I'm not even in a bad financial situation rn, I just don't really need that PC asap and don't want to encourage the current market by actually buying at those inflated prices. It's gonna be a very cool setup once DDR5 RAM goes back to being affordable, but in the meantime it's just a very expensive adhd pile on my floor xD

  • This hurts, I finally decided to build my first own PC like 2 months ago, got everything planned out but decided to wait for black friday to actually order all the parts. Now I have everything except RAM and an SSD, because I refuse to pay those prices 🥲 Maybe I'll buy a single second hand 8GB stick just to find out whether my system even boots..

  • I use Purelymail for Email, just because it was the cheapest and easiest solution to use my own domain without having to host anything myself. I don't think any other Email service will beat their 10$ per year price.

    For search engine, I have tried Kagi but just didn't see the point. My DDG searches are perfectly fine and I still find everything I need with relative ease. Although I've been actually needing the search engine much less recently as I've embraced just reading the official documentation for things I program with haha
