  • It sounds impressive to people who aren't in the field. Like "scientist" or "doctor". You might be really dumb but when you drop that title it tends to catch attention, warranted or not.

    What happened here? I see some things about people being upset about how little he pays his kids for appearing in videos but I'm not sure that's what you're referring to?

  • I definitely feel like he lost touch a long time ago.

    There was a video that was hosted at one of his employee's houses (I've tried to find the video before but couldn't) and there were multiple points where Linus was being incredibly rude to the guy's new home. He was making fun of things for looking cheap, and at one point stood on (or placed something heavy, I don't remember) a table as the owner asked several times not to in fear of it damaging the table. The video didn't really get much attention as far as I'm aware, but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I kinda stopped watching as many of their videos.

    A few years later the fiasco with the prototype they sold without permission happened and his reaction and the fallout that ensued took LTT off my subscription list.

    The video where he talks about how it just didn't make sense not to buy a private jet was so far beyond out of touch I don't know how anyone thought it was a good idea (the video, not the jet).

  • Yup. Maybe I'm just a lazy bum but I can only really handle college a few years at a time. My first time was awful, I wasn't ready and blew off half the year I went. My last go was 2 years long and I did incredibly well, but transferred to a new career using my newfound knowledge and had to put a pause on things. Now I'm about 2 years into that and am just starting to feel like I have the mental wriggle room to start thinking about picking up a class or two... I may be 50 by the time I end up actually "completing" something! But one of my last classes had a gentleman in his 60s, so I'm not too worried. Everyone has their own speed, just find yours.

  • Seconding this. The library was my best friend when I was still in school (I did not finish my degree but the field I am in was satisfied with what I'd accomplished). I made myself do most of my homework there and it's probably one of the main reasons I got as far as I did. My college had private study rooms with a large table and white board in them; some people would isolate themselves in there and use it for a large workspace for their own projects, but when I was in Gen Chem (that class nearly killed me), I was there with classmates most weeks doing study groups.

    OP, if you are the introverted type, these informal study groups are one of the best ways you can get to know people imo. It's like the classroom, because you've all got the same class, tests, homework etc, but it's less formal and more social. It was my favorite place to share the weird ways I made the concepts make sense to me, and next to my professor was the best source of information.

  • Tbf, a country with universal healthcare (and a corrupt government) is the perfect target for a predatory healthcare industry; doesn't matter to them if the money they get is directly from the patients, or if it comes from the government.

  • My decision isn't based on metrics, just by how many .ml posts/comments I see that I know I wouldn't if I'd blocked the instance. I know a lot of crap comes from them, and I don't doubt they're problematic, but for the most part, the shitty posts and comments from them are down voted to hell so I never see them, or are from users I've already blocked.

  • I could, but for the very reasons you cite instances don't defederate from them, I don't. I block individuals that post bullshit I don't like, but my feed is already small as it is without purging a sizable amount of it.

  • OP is assumedly going to companies looking to hire eg a copyrighter for themselves and pitching himself as a one-person team with no experience.

    OP should be going to copyright companies looking to hire a copyrighter as an employee for their own firm, where they will receive training.

    For the mechanic example, it's like trying to start your own freelance mechanic company with no experience vs getting a job at a shop as a rag-getter and learning things as you go.

  • I'm pretty sure that they specifically repost things posted from .ml accounts. They aren't looking at the posts or hoping to farm "karma" or whatever, they're trying to de-populate the instance.

    Can be pretty annoying when all the .ml posts line up with the cm00* posts.
