  • All the free market evangelists always conveniently forget the original definition of what constitutes a free market. The paper that coined the term free market specifically referred to them as "well regulated". From the very beginning it was recognized that a functioning market requires government regulation, if for nothing else at least for contract enforcement and dispute resolution. Without regulation what you're left with is just "might makes right".

    Realistically though there are two distinctly different groups that use the term "free market" and they mean two distinctly different things when they do so. We have economists who mean theoretical free markets and have a very specific concept in mind. Right or wrong they are at least arguing in good faith. Then we have politicians and the general public who are using the term purely as an excuse to justify their policies designed to benefit massive corporations and the rich. For the later group the former group are just tools to be used. Even if all the economists got together and declared free markets a bad idea they would just keep referencing the old economic papers, just like they do for trickle down economics.

  • AI isn't allowed on any of my systems, it's practically the first thing I disable (alongside tracking and metrics, but that's basically the same thing). The only AI I will ever allow would be something entirely offline and self hosted that I have complete and total control over.

I'd rather abandon the small handful of games that won't let you run them under Linux than let MS scrape all my personal data and shove ads into every crack of my OS.   • I got lucky and picked up a 7900 XTX for a reasonable price last gen and it's been a really great card. I've got a couple systems coming up on needing a refresh (1080 Ti and a 2080 Ti) and I'm planning on upgrading both of them to a 9070 XT. I'm staying away from Nvidia until they start pricing their GPUs at prices actual consumers can afford instead of corporations looking to build AI farms.

  • Please see exhibit A, the US telecoms infrastructure which has backdoors added by the alphabet agencies and has now been so thoroughly violated by Chinese hackers that they've basically given up trying to fix it. It would literally be easier to burn every telecom installation in the US to the ground and build new ones on the ashes than it would be to remove all the Chinese rootkits and back doors. All because someone just had to have a backdoor for the NSA/CIA/FBI.

  • I will be shocked if the Democrats learn anything from the last election. I fully expect the next election (assuming we even have one) that they'll be running on the exact same right of center platform that they've been using for the last few decades. The only way they win elections at this point is if Trump fucks up the economy enough that a significant chunk of his previous supports make protest votes against him. Odds of that happening are not great.

  • Luigi worried them, he didn't cause them fear. It's also going to take more than one single event. A line in the sand needs to be made with actual lethal consequences for crossing it. Until that happens they'll continue doing whatever makes them richer at the expense of literally the rest of the world. One single Luigi changes nothing. A million Luigi's would permanently solve the problem.

  • So your argument is that because other countries are supporting Israel's genocide that it's OK for the US to support it as well? Even if the US was only contributing 1% of the weapons and funding it still wouldn't be acceptable.

    To be clear, Palestine wasn't a valid reason not to vote for Harris, for as shit a candidate as she was (although marginally better than Biden) she was still significantly better than Trump. But Palestine absolutely was a valid reason to criticize Harris. Backing Israel on this one was one of the dumbest moves the Democrats made in the last election because it would have cost them literally nothing to withdraw funding or even making future support conditional on Israel stopping attacks on civilians (and not engaging in ethnic cleansing which was where this was all obviously heading as we're now seeing).
