  • This doesn't really surprise me from Trump. Why would he care about global warming? If some coal and oil people stroke his ego a bit of course he will sacrifice global climate for them.

It does surprise me that there's any support for this amongst his base though.

Here in Australia our conservative party was slaughtered at the last election. There were a number of reasons but a key reason is their poor position on climate change. Now with their party decimated they're trying to re-brand and bounce back. Their big idea? Discard carbon emission goals. Fuck trying to make everything more efficient, who would want that right?

  • Really? I thought it was just that wind and solar is so woke.

  • Yeah. I think they're just young idealists, trying to signal their values on social media.

I don't think Lemmy is much of a target for bots but I feel like we get the back scatter - actual users parroting the narrative they picked up elsewhere.

  • I mostly agree, I think.

I think the quote is taken out of context.

However, it's unusual for someone like Trump to mention the afterlife - although we shouldn't read too much into that.

Having said that, the guy is ~80.

Aren't many overweight 85 year olds around.

It would be interesting to see some stats on life expectancy for someone his age and weight.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's something like 20% chance of dying in the next 12 months, then if he's still alive in 1 year a 30% chance of dying in the following 12 months, then 40% and so on. The chances of him making 90 are infinitessimal.

So yeah, any commentary is conjecture, but it's not just noise.

  • Lots of love for LibreOffice.

Its a great opensource project that just keeps chugging along being great.

My team and I use it exclusively in our consultancy. Complex documents and spreadsheets all day long. LO never gets tired.

Without LO id be beholden to Microsoft.

Apache should really release the rights to the name OpenOffice and let LO have it.

  • The ribbon UI sure is shit.

LO has a command palette which is handy when looking for obscure functions. Shift esc.

  • Oh please. You don't even have the concepts of a plan.

  • WTAF is going on here Americans?

Why did all the other Dems just sign?

Where are the hordes of protesters outside this building and harassing the guards following other reps?

These people are in the midst of a very obvious and direct attempt to undermine your vote.

This person seems to be the only one standing her ground.

  • It's really simple.

You criticise the government of the day, whoever they may be.

You do not criticise your own side when they're not in government or running for election.

  • So your plan is to encourage others not to vote?

    Seems counter productive.

  • I was lucky enough to meet my SO before online dating became the norm.

I'm just not equipped to navigate something like that.

I feel like being eternally single and lonely would be easier than having to encounter the constant rejection.

  • I guess it depends on the term predator.

  • It's not only about voting, but the complaining.

It seems like the problem in the US is getting people to give a fuck. By spreading this narrative that the democrats are just slower fascists or whatever your just encouraging progressive voters not to vote.

  • That's not really how voting works though.

An election is a poll or test or the collective will of citizens at a given point in time. Granted, in the US you have the electoral college fuckery overlaid on that but still ...

Voting Blue but complaining about them to your compatriots is not the way.

Protesting about Gaza outside Democrat conventions in an election cycle is not the way to secure better outcome for Palestinians.

  • It's disingenuous to characterise imperfect alternatives like Newsom as "slower fascism". That's a propaganda narrative.

In this case choosing the better alternative means preserving your ability to actually stop fascism.

Did you see the other headline today where your actual president mentioned avoiding elections by starting a war ?

It's this type of "Harris is imperfect therefore the same as Trump" attitude that brought you to this juncture.

  • This attitude is how you ended up electing Trump.

Its bonkers that you guys are spiralling into a dystopian shitscape day by day and just cant bring yourself to acknowledge that any alternative has to be better.

  • My dad would give me or my siblings a belting when we had misbehaved.

Not so bad there was a lasting bruise or whatever but I feel like I remember each occasion.

My parents weren't really great parents, but I wouldn't describe them as abusive. They didn't punish us out of anger. Physical punishments were one of the few tools they had.

Other's are welcome to call them abusive but to me it could better be described as ineptitude.

Now having kids myself there's just no way I would ever do that. My kids are only 2 so not really old enough to have meaningful conversations but I feel like most of the punishments I received were really due to some kind of misunderstanding - perhaps more accurately me not understanding.

  • "This is a waste of taxpayer dollars and really performative theater.”

Isn't it also kind of uh, oh I don't know, maybe an attempt to coerce a democratically elected official through intimidation?
