  • I dont really know much about this but I know youre probably right in the context of the world wars.

Was it Spanish flu? IDK, but poor nutrition, hygiene, and close proximity in the trenches was a huge factor.

In a present day war, it would probably be different? Still some "dug in" defences but far more ranged, airborne, and remotely controlled armaments.

  • Do animals know what fascists are?

  • There's a use case for this but who knows how big this niche is, and ultimately that's what will determine success or failure.

  • Sure, in the context of physical abilities.

However, i think bands of hominids who care for each other have a survival advantage. I guess thats who we've evolved to be social creatures.

Also,, nanna might not be able to hunt mammoths anymore, but she knows what to do in years when the mammoth dont come.

  • The question is whether it's going to kill him.

There's a range of maladies common amongst octogenarians which require blood thinners that can make you bruise easily. Some benign others less so.

  • I do use nextcloud for my small consultancy team but I dislike it immensely, mostly due to personal preferences.

I think I pretty much just don't like having one platform that does everything. I want to self host my own cloud, I don't want to self host a thing that provides a cloud.

Additionally, and this really is just a personal preference, I dislike php projects almost as much as Java.

Primarily I use nextcloud's file sync. This aspect is IMO extremely well implemented. It seems to work very reliably.

We do use contacts and calendars. If there were good alternatives I would switch to them but sabreDav et al lacks a good UI. I'm aware you can disable this functionality in nextcloud.

Anything else that can potentially be integrated is better hosted separately IMO.

  • Nah. Thinking of people as tools to be used is the deeper thought process.

He's just stupid enough to think that he's "good" and the people he likes are "good".

  • Nah, I don't think Putin is that stupid.

I mean I'm sure Putin is a scum bag just like the rest of them, but he's not going to fly to a Kompromat farm controlled by his nation's enemies.

  • He genuinely believes that everyone that he associates with are inherently "good" people who occasionally do bad things.

Anyone who is dissimilar to him and others in the ruling class are inherently "bad" people who may do good things but also of course usually do bad things.

Bad people must be punished, or at least subjugated so they can earn the right to participate in a society supporting the good people. Good people shouldn't get caught up in the occasional bad things they do.

  • Everyone is laughing about Trump. What an embarrassment, honestly.

  • I guess it's nice to see that there's some kind of resistance, but no one thinks this ruling is actually going to be implemented.

They just delay, obfuscate, appeal, and eventually you get a good republican judge who will throw it out.

  • The trump administration is never going to release anything harmful to the trump administration.

At this point, not releasing the files is the smoke screen for all the other shitty stuff they're doing.

  • Fair enough I guess.

Bike lights are intended to be super annoying to the point of being obnoxious here. They need to be bright and flashy enough for oblivious drivers to actually notice you.

  • Oh nice. I've heard of a fundamental attribution error before but didnt realise it was this.

You commonly see it written as "we judge ourselves by our inte twins but others by their actions".

Using the examples in that wikipedia page, if we are late for work it doesn't matter because we intended to be on time. If others are late it indicates a lack of planning or dedication.

  • Its a tricky game to play.

For you, if you know it will take you 3s to go from sitting comfortably to walking down the aisle, then fine - you can wait.

Most people need time to get organised. They're also unable to focus on getting organised unless they're standing up because that is one step in getting organised. They have no ability to prioritise the steps which are presently actionable.

  • I... don't think thats the best explanation.

I've been feeling lonely myself lately.

I can see how an app that just says nice things to you could be a kind of salve.

In the same way that watching porn can fulfil a very human need, I think a chat bot can also do that.

I guess it can be a machine designed to stimulate specific emotions.

  • Yeah. The dunning kruger effect is a real problem here.

I saw a meme saying something like, gen AI is a real expert in everything but completely clueless about my area of specialisation.

As in... it generates plausible answers that seem great but they're just terrible answers.

I'm a consultant I'm in a legal adjacent field. 20 years deep. I've been using a model from hugging face over the last few months.

It can save me time by generating a lot of boiler plate with references et cetera. However it very regularly overlooks critically important components. If I didnt know about these things then I wouldn't know it was missing from the answer.

So really, it cant help you be more knowledgeable, it can only support you at your existing level.

Additionally, for complex / very specific questions, it's just a confidently incorrect failure. It sucks that it cant tell you how confident it is with a given answer.

  • Yeah i was going to point this out. Its not just the hitches. All of these assholes have backed in, and deliberately gone in further than the boundary of the bay to minimise how far their nose overhangs the other end.

  • Don't do that.

Flashing tail light batteries last for many hours.

Riders often leave them on just so you dont need to remember to turn them on again when you depart.

Even if the battery did go flat, you're not stranded.

I know you mean well but it might not be appreciated as much as you think.
