  • My cats throw temper tantrums and then get sulky every time I change into my work uniform.

I keep telling them that when they start contributing to this household I won't have to work so much, but no luck so far. I keep reminding them that they can't get mad about me going to work when I'm the only one of us 3 paying for rent, food, and cat toys.

I wish I could train them to at least clean or do laundry or something while I'm gone.

  • There's a Winnie the Pooh episode where the characters are playing on Christopher Robin's train set and the episode turns into a parody of a stereotypical Western with a train robbery and a Western town with a saloon and jail and all that.

In one scene they're on the train and one character (I think Pooh, but it might be Piglet) appears out of nowhere. Another character questions his sudden, impossible appearance on a moving train in the middle of the desert and and Pooh/Piglet responds "it's a fantasy"

I don't know why that dumb joke stuck in my head, but sometimes when life gets to be too much I randomly think "it's a fantasy" and things don't really matter anymore or have to make sense.

  • I did delete the bookmarks, yes. I'll have to keep playing with it and see if I can make it stop, but it does make me feel a little better knowing what it is. I just wish they were more open and transparent about it. Seeing my browser just randomly redirecting me through third party links with no warning is alarming and makes me want to go find another browser and I've gone through like 6 in the last 2 years trying to find one I like.

  • Ooh, thank you. I get they need to make money, but I hate this. It also won't seem to turn off for me, I disabled the setting for direct match, deleted all my cookies and such, deleted the browser cache, and it's still popping up and still redirecting through the affiliate link. Boo.

  • I've been able to replicate with DuckDuckGo, Startpage, and Ecosia. Interestingly enough while testing it out to see if that was the issue I've noticed that it isn't happening every time, more like every other time. It redirects so fast it's easy to miss, but I was able to screen record and grab a screenshot of the link it's redirecting through. It's the same regardless of search engine.

  • Report it to who? Vivaldi?

  • Vivaldi concerns me a little, because I keep catching them trying to replace web addresses for major retailers with what appear to be affiliate links. For example, if I start typing the address for Amazon (I know, shitty company, but it's the first page that comes to mind) it will pop up an auto complete to click on. If I click it, I can see that I'm redirected to Amazon through what appears to be either an affiliate or a tracking link. However, if I type the address fully in the browser and don't use auto complete it takes me straight to Amazon, no redirecting or strange links popping up first. They do not disclose that they are doing this anywhere that I have found and I think it's shady as fuck. I don't have any extensions installed and it happens on multiple devices (phone, laptop, PC) and only on Vivaldi, so it's definitely the browser and not an untrustworthy extension or a compromised device.

  • I think the way it works now is they take it to court and get the judge to allow them to continue building while the court case works its way through the system and in 6 years when they determine it's illegal the center has already been built for 5.

  • What's your favorite simple and easy vegetarian recipe that's filling?

I'm not vegetarian, I love me a good cheeseburger every once in a blue moon and always will, but I don't eat a lot of red meat and I've been trying to eat less and less meat in general. I'm not going to pretend eating meat in today's world is ethical, but neither will there be a noticeable difference if I stop buying my pound or two of chicken and a filet of fish every month. I grew up on a meat and potatoes diet and while I've learned a lot since then I'm still not great at cooking filling vegetarian meals, I feel like every time I cook completely without meat I end up absolutely starving in an hour, even if I have protein from other sources.

  • Wulfgar is an amazing name for a cat.

  • If a man tried to propose to me with a kitten I think my brain would short out from joy at getting a kitten and I wouldn't hear another word out of his mouth. I'd totally miss the actual proposal and just be delighted at the kitten.

I got my first cat when he was a kitten and the moment I laid eyes on him my heart melted and my brain turned to scrambled eggs and 10 years later I still have the exact same reaction every single time I look at him.

  • Johnstown PA.

Was there a little over a decade ago on a beautiful summer Saturday afternoon. There was barely any traffic in the city, and we were the only people out walking around (we stopped by during travel to see the flood museum, it's small but really interesting and slightly eerie, if you're ever in the area go check it out, it's worth the stop). I don't think we really saw other people until we went over to the edge of town to another main tourist attraction (the incline plane railroad).

Although to be fair most of the rural East Coast (and I guess the US, but I've mostly traveled around the East Coast states) is like that. A bunch of sad towns that maybe were something once when their respective industries were booming, but now are sad, impoverished towns filled with once beautiful buildings that are falling apart.

  • Hmm, how about shavings of uranium garnishing a massive chocolate lava cake with whipped cream (the real stuff made from whipping cream, not the stuff from a can or the abomination that is cool whip)

  • After seeing all the memes about how many calories are in uranium, that would be fun to try.

  • On a good shift, yes, we have down time. My current job I am usually lucky and get time to sit around, but it's not generally as relaxing as you'd think because at any time I need to be up and out the door within 90 seconds, so I'm always mentally in go mode.

My last job I didn't do 24s, but I did do 16s, and I had to work a lot of OT to pay rent, so it was not uncommon for me to work 6 days/80 hours a week and I definitely did not spend time sitting around the station. I was almost always out running calls. I'd come home, sleep for 3/4 hours and be out the door again to work.

Not trying to do the suffering one-upsmanship. I've had to do clinical shifts in the ER for my schooling and I hated every moment of it. I don't think you could pay me enough to work in a hospital, it's not my thing. I have deep respect for my nursing homies, I love them and always have had a great working relationship with them. OP commented that they don't know any other jobs with such ridiculous working requirements so I added two.

  • Can I introduce you to EMS and firefighters 24 and 48 hour shifts?

  • Oh, I'm so sorry about your cat! It's so hard when they're suffering. I cry just thinking about the inevitable end someday, I don't know how I'm going to get through it when it happens, my cats are all I have.

  • I work 24 hour shifts. It's great! I love it, because I only have to work 2 days a week and have off the rest of the time. On the other hand, that shitty feeling you have when you start your shift and go "well, I just gotta get through X more hours then I can go home"? I gotta get through 24 more hours before I get to go home. It sucks.

  • Thankfully the cat did not get the Adderall. He does not need the Adderall. Luckily I went to take my pill first so I had an extra hand free to pop his mouth open and as I was putting it in my mouth my brain kicked in and went "why is your Adderall blue and not pink?" That's when I realized that I was about to take his Prozac and give him my Adderall. The last thing I need is to be more tired and the last thing he needs is to be more hyper.

A new coworker recently asked me the age of my cat. When I told him my cat is almost 10 he said "aw, that's so sweet, you have a nice calm senior cat." I got home from work and that night my cat was being his normal self, tearing all over the apartment, laying on his back flipping his toys around and ferociously trying to murder them, and "helping" me sort paperwork by grabbing random papers from the stacks and running away with them. I couldn't stop laughing, I was like hey bud, didn't you know you're supposed to be a calm senior?
