  • I suppose a state can sign it's rights away in a contract just like any other entity, but I'd love to know if one EVER HAS. Because I don't think that's up to GEO and ICE to determine between the two of them which laws they are obligated to follow or not. At first I assumed that ICE had gotten some actual US State to agree to this, which would be horrible but at least would make more sense than a private fucking company and a federal agency unilaterally declaring they won't follow the laws of the state they are operating in, which is what this appear to be.

  • I know chip and RAM fabs are incredibly difficult and expensive to build, but how is the several trillion $ out there just up for grabs for anyone that can undercut the like 4 companies that have one not enough for tons of huge companies to say "I don't care what it costs, I don't care what you have to do, because even if I pay 50x what it costs nvidia to make a fab, I will still be scrooging like a villain"?

  • Right, I'm not really sure how their product keys would work, without a "product lock", for the key to fit into. That's probably not a great metaphor, point being, of course they would always have needed and used something like this to lock your OS to your device using the product key, right?

  • In my state we vote 100% by paper mail-in ballot and it is one of the most secure, traceable, and fraud-resistant ways you could possibly do it. And it's vastly more fair than in person voting for the disabled, elderly, homebound, just to name a few. Repubs will whine about machines not having a proper paper trail and then shit on literally the most auditable, paper-trail-ful possible way of doing things, which is universal mail-in ballots. I've never heard one person here, of any political side, say that they'd rather have a touchscreen backed up by god knows what quality of software in a booth someplace they have to drive to on one certain day so they can stand in line for hours and cross their fingers that their vote registers the way they meant it to.

  • And being "in the US" or not doesn't have shit to do with it anyway. Yes, CBP gets some special powers at the border, like warrantless search, but whether you are before or after passport control does not determine whether or not you are subject to the laws of the US, with, again, the exception of the special powers granted CBP that do reduce some protections you would normally have.

  • If they're smart (ha) then they'll just generate a bunch of buzz and fear about how ICE might be out and about on election day, so that as many people as possible from vulnerable populations (aka non-male non-white people) are too scared for their lives and freedom to go vote.

  • Oh for sure, I just meant for those people that do subscribe to Porsche Connect, Porsche is very probably finding some way to monetize all that sweet sweet location and navigation data. I feel like any car that generates telemetry data and has a data connection to the manufacturer, those companies are packaging up and selling off that data to someone. But that's really just speculation on my part.
