  • Obesity and diabetes kill people. Dangerous to your health and the health of the people around you if you are naive about the average amount of sugar consumed. Anyone arguing life is already very expensive has a point, but arguing it is a silly tax is either because you are uninformed or indifferent to the health of your community.

  • I'd agree if this targeted products with added sugar and left the artificial sweetners out of it. Fruit juice is also sold in high volumes, especially to families and people beyond their prime age. They might be less marketed, but I would argue they're not less unhealthy than soda with artificial sweetners. They might not miss the figurative goal entirely, but they sure are missing their literal goal if they are doing this to limit peoples consumption of unhealthy drinks.

  • As far as i can see those "facts" are false, i don't disagree. My point wasn't really about what would be the right thing, but more about what is likely to happen.

  • There are two possible reasons for putting up a fake, to scare people to behave themselves and to catch someone destroying it. The latter has been happening a lot and is widely covered by the news. If it is the first then maybe it wasn't entrapment baiting, but i can't think of any other reason. Also the article specifically states the intent of the cops.

  • While i agree, the judge might say the person destroying it did not think it had that value and still had the intend to destroy something expensive. Not a lawyer, but i have this feeling the judge won't really be neutral.

  • I dont know how you've come to believe that, but it is not even remotely true. Cows eat parts that humans do not, but what they're fed is not a product that'd otherwise be wasted. Deforestation to feed livestock including cows is a real thing and soy is a big part of that. Feel free to eat as much meat as you want, but the least you can do is not share false information.

    When someone mentions soy, we often think about foods such as tofu, soy milk, tempeh, or edamame beans. This feeds into the argument that meat and dairy substitutes – such as switching from meat to high-protein tofu or from dairy to soy milk – is in fact worse for the environment. But, only a small percentage of global soy is used for these products. More than three-quarters (77%) of soy is used as feed for livestock.

  • I don't think there is a country that wants to invade the US, not even out of spite. Maybe Canada will take a bit of the top, and Mexico will snoop a bit of the south, but I don't think you should expect much more.

  • Them using land is not the only thing they do.

    They drink water for example, a kg of cow meat requires 1000L of water. This is not a problem everywhere, but it can be.

    They eat grass and there are many places where they have the space and the climate to walk around and eat the grass that is there, but many places they need additional food. Their biggest source of protein is usually soy. Most of that soy comes from south-america: first they burn down a forest to make space, then they plant genetically modified soy. This soy is modified to be resistant to pesticides. They spray the entire plot with these chemicals, so everything dies except the soy. This stuff travels beyond the borders of the farmers land, killing local wildlife and threatening the ecosystem.

    Also not all cows are treated well. A cow only gives milk after birth, so each year a cow has to be insimenated and birth a baby cow. A cow can live for decades, but their body is working so hard many won't live over 10 years.

    Another problem is that cows are given hormones and antibiotics, residues of which end up in consumer meat.

    I'm not writing this because I believe we should go to a 100% plant-based society, but the current system of mass-production is a lose-lose situation for everyone except for the people making a (small) profit.
