  • I’m so goddamn hyper alert that I need complete silence and pitch black darkness to fall asleep.

Except for thunderstorms. Those are oddly soothing. But that’s it.

  • My life has meaning. It has meaning for no other reason than I say it does, and no one gets to decide that for me. I do not purport to speak for your life, or the lives of those I care about, or my cat’s life, or my neighbors, the birds, trees, grass, germs, or any other living thing. I do not assign meaning to society, civilizations large or small, or things that have been built to benefit me. I can only speak for my life. And I say that my life has meaning. Nothing that has happened to me, nothing that has been said, done, built or destroyed, can take that meaning away from my life without my permission.

A life has no meaning in the same way that a blank piece of paper has no meaning. I give that piece of paper meaning by writing, sketching, coloring, folding, tearing…and perhaps ultimately destroying. Now that piece of paper has a unique history imprinted on it. It can be shared, displayed, hidden, or thrown away. But the whole reason I did anything to the paper at all was because it was meaningful in the moment for me to do so.

    Motherfucker…

  • I’m a lab rat, and probably the best part of the job is being left the fuck alone. I do my job and I do it well. No one fucks with me, micromanages me, follows me around, talks to me…it’s bliss. Yeah the job itself is rewarding (materials testing for aerospace), and my coworkers are pretty chill. But I’m a guy who likes his solitude, and I get plenty of it.

Hate? The hours. I do a 55-hour work week which is grueling as hell. Doesn’t leave a whole lot of time or energy to do fun things in my free time. But the OT is where the money’s at and I’m not quite ready to give that up yet.

  • I miss the frosted vanilla creme pop tarts. They were always my favorite ones. I’d toast them and put butter on them and it was just magnificent. Then they discontinued them, brought them back a few years later, and discontinued them again. I’d love to have those back.

And no, that cookies n cream abomination is not the same.

  • In addition to the issues regarding temperature and atmospheric pressure, one thing I haven’t seen mentioned in these comments is solar radiation.

Earth has a magnetic field that deflects the harmful solar radiation away. Mars does not. So assuming your microorganisms can survive the extreme temperatures and practically worthless atmosphere, they’d still have to contend with that.

That’s a problem for humans too. Any habitat we build on Mars needs to shield us from solar radiation. And even if we successfully terraformed the planet to have a breathable atmosphere and farmable soil, we’d still be in trouble being outside without protective clothing.

  • I once heard someone say this: In a surveillance state, you’re not the one who decides if you have something to hide.

  • I’m gonna try and make a dent in some songs that I’ve been working on. For one I’ve got the rhythm tracks all done, just need to see what else I need to add, like synth layers, background fx…it’s an instrumental, so no need to worry about vocals on this one. The other one I’ve only gotten about a third of the guitars done, and I really need to write drum and bass parts before I go any further with it. The lyrics are almost done, but I want to focus on the rhythm section first.

I’ll go through creative cycles where I’ll write/record every day, and then find myself going for weeks struggling to find the motivation. But I took some time off work specifically so I could focus my energy on music. So that’s what I’m gonna do.

  • I have two adult children who I haven’t spoken to for almost eight years and, last I heard, want nothing to do with me.

The situation is complex, and I’m not completely innocent. From their perspective I’m a dogshit person and they’re better off without me in their lives. There are aspects of the situation they don’t know about, specifically the domestic abuse that I suffered at the hands of their mother, which she was very careful not to do in their presence. So all they know is how they saw me behaving, which was often pretty terrible, and whatever she’s told them, which I know isn’t the whole truth. It’s maddening how completely unfair the situation is but I’m hard pressed to think of a way to better it.

I check in on their social media every now and then. They seem happy. I don’t attempt to message them. I just go about my day with this quiet sadness in the background.

  • Cynical take: They passed on you because they don’t have to pay an MA as much as a PhD. Always about the money…

  • That was a good read. I like hearing about an actor’s motivations when doing a scene, especially that scene, which was the one I was thinking of when I wrote my comment. See, I can acknowledge that Homelander is a psychopath, but as someone who has been hurt as a kid, I empathize with him in that moment. Yeah, you psycho motherfucker, get some. They deserve it. Doesn’t mean I suddenly like him.

trump 2.0, as if we needed yet another portrayal of that

Well the show has always been allegorical. It just got to the point where the writers decided they couldn’t be subtle about it anymore. I’m okay with that. Was entertaining to see all the trumpanzees on social media going “Wait…this show is making fun of us!??!?”

  • I occasionally find myself in this one near where I work, in a very ass-backwards red county. Saw a guy strapped - open carrying his pistols (yes, plural) while wearing clothing with just about all the 2A shit you can think of.

Found myself wondering…what mindset leads you to believe you need to present yourself like that in a fucking Walmart of all places?

  • I love how The Boys sets you up to think that Homelander is the most irredeemably evil person in the whole show, then later on you find yourself feeling bad for him and even kinda cheering for him for a little while.
