    I saw that dynamic too but I think part of how we got to this point is that we broke the trust of the public by insisting "this is fine" when they could tell it wasn't, and the insecure condescension we got from a lot of our leaders didn't help matters

    I will say that there are some people way too eager to burn everything down right now and the crazier things get the more important it is that we all try to speak carefully, but OTOH we also absolutely need to throw some things into history's dustbin and the longer we wait to do so the worse this is gonna get

  • I actually agree, I don't think I'll live to see those better days because I think we're still staring down another century or so of dumb shit, but I think our whole species is eventually going to hit a rock bottom, learn some very painful lessons, and come out better for it. Also, I think by that point the idea of nation states might be kind of antiquated.

  • It's CNN we're dealing with here, so of course the headline is misleading. Most of the article and most of their polling questions are actually about views of the two major parties which are in general basically worse than they ever have been.

  • I think throughout most of human history most people have tried really hard to believe "this is fine" regardless of what's going on and periods of time that we see as having massive unrest involved like 50% of the population openly saying "this sucks" and maybe 20-25% saying "this sucks and I'm willing to do something about it"

If RuPaul had a believable and consistent message about kicking out Biden loyalist dead weight from the administration and, say, launching a program that paired increased aid funding for local governments and schools with more aggressive investigations and prosecutions of price gouging he could have dunked on Trump.

  • I think I disagree because there are just so many ridiculous roadblocks to ballot access for third parties in different states, plus even if you can overcome that and win you'll run into a bunch of institutional roadblocks if you don't caucus with a "major" party (e.g. if you want a seat on one of those bipartisan committees that hash out 90% of the discussion on a lot of boring-but-important stuff before it even gets to the legislature), but I can definitely see where you're coming from

He thinks a healthcare CEO getting shot is a problem but doesn't say anything about all the people who die from a lack of healthcare, calls out "countervailing pressure from within the Democratic party" but can't bring himself to say "Republicans are not reciprocating" because that would be too partisan or something, etc.

    It's this kind of cowardly condescending bullshit that has brought us to this point. These fucking shitstains who think they're leaders of our society (lawmakers, professors, business leaders, etc.) are fucking cowards who can't ever say something about the powerful people who are actually ruining everything without spending ten times as long complaining about average Americans. The problem isn't political polarization, it's that working people are being crushed and it's making us lose our minds.

The biggest reason the United States is a wealthy place with the ability to pay for a good social safety net* isn't because we have the best system of government or regulations or people or any of that nonsense politicians and pundits will say, it's because we never had WWI and II play out across our territory and we haven't had to waste a bunch of money protecting ourselves from Canada or Mexico.

    Fuck a lot of what my country has done throughout history, but it's got a great foundation for building something that doesn't suck.

    *Of course it's definitely not doing this currently, but there's potential here

    Lots of guns and zero humility or acceptance of their own mistakes. Also, Florida sinking into the ocean probably isn't going to make anyone in that territory more well behaved.

    Also also - it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the world to let this red state country come into existence, because when they aren't attacking us they'd probably be flinging shit at places like Mexico and Cuba. Also, you know their environmental policies would be a fucking disaster that the global climate really can't afford.
