One of the big reasons is that GOP control congress atm. The jackasses who flouted their responsibilities and legal obligations to answer to congress (under this administration and Biden’s) have been republicans. They knew that Dems didn’t have the stomach and/or the numbers to prosecute them or hold them accountable for evading their responsibilities - so the repubs called to give evidence or testify in front of congress just did what they wanted with impunity.
Fauci is a persona non-grata with this administration and its party as a whole. Fauci knows he’ll be subjected to any and all prosecutorial avenues the GOP can utilise. I believe the thinking is this is the surest way to protect himself. His legal way to say nothing without lying, maintain his own ethics and morals, abide by the law and his obligations under it, and ensure he doesn’t give them one iota of ammo to use against him in future actions.
TL;DR: Fauci has integrity and believes in the rule of law.
The USA doesn’t recognise the ICC because they do not want their citizens to be subjected to it. There are quotes from senior officials and diplomats essentially saying that the USA agrees with the concept of the ICC but only for lawless countries where people who violate international law are unlikely to be held to account. Essentially it is a humdinger of an example of “rules for thee but not for me” creedo. The US hides behind its UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) as a panacea excusing it from subjecting itself to the rules it wants to enforce on the rest of the world. The argument is that the UCMJ is sufficient to enforce accountability and international law, and that the ICC is superfluous. It’s a tenuous argument at best and ultimately shelters the USDF from international accountability for their actions.
My vote is mildly annoyed at being filmed. My cat gets irritated when the IR light gets emitted (I think for the autofocus) - he can tell when the camera app is open vs not - I think it shines right in his eyes and it gives him the irrits.
You’ll remember him. You’ll remember what it felt like and smelled like to bury your nose in his soft little belly risking life and limb amongst those murder mittens to take a deep warm breath. You’ll remember all those things. With time you’ll think of it less frequently and it’ll bring less sorrow when you do. The memories will still be inside you, he will still be with you. Something will remind you of him in a few weeks’ time and it’ll hit you like a ton of bricks. The same memory in a year will be more gentle and joyful. It hurts so much because you love him so much. That love won’t go away. Your grief now will become gratitude and fondness in time. You honor him now by feeling and acknowledging the pain. Don’t allow yourself or anyone else to minimise it because we’re not talking about a human. He was walking around on four legs carrying a big chunk of your soul. That loss is as real and devastating as any other. It’s not brave to be stoic and push it down. It’s brave to own it, and feel it which is what you’re doing. He was very lucky to have you as his human, and vice versa.
With time and healing, you may find that you feel the need put all that love somewhere. Know that if you do, no matter how soon, or how far from now, you’re not undermining his importance in your life. It’s ok to find another lil soul who needs that love and will thrive in it, and give it back ten-fold, just like beautiful Alistair.
It sounds like you have a beautiful group of friends around you. That doesn’t happen without being the kind of person who attracts them. By all counts you’re a good person, let them be your crutches while you’re finding your feet again. You’d do the same for them.
