I used to play it like this, not as a child, but more of teenage drinking/smoking age sort of thing.
I think we focused on slightly sillier questions though, such as (as far as I can remember):"Do they have the cold, dead eyes of a killer," and"Do they ever start a sentence with 'I'm not racist, but...'"mixed in with stuff like"does it look like they've just cacked their pants?" (Soiled themselves)
It's a very good question - though the 1870s is about when "dry plate" photography was introduced, and during the decade, exposure time potentially dropped below a second (depending on the what/where/how of the photograph).
Roughly 1850-1860ish is when you're looking at over ten or twenty seconds for a photo, which is probably a "cat sitting still" limit. Earlier than that you start going towards minutes and hours for a photograph. I think there are cat photos from the 1840s, though I imagine the photos are blurry or the cats are asleep
If you want a bunch of early cat photos to look at, in the UK, there was a cat photographer, Henry/Harry Pointer, who was seemingly pretty well established in the 1870s. Photohistory Sussex - Henry Pointer (scroll down to the "Brighton Cats" bit)
Yeah, agreed. All that groundwork of gritty and brutal politics, war, ethics, survival, difficult choices etc touched on a lot of contemporary issues at the time, then all seems a bit wasted by Space Jesusing the end of it.
It was probably always going to go that way - the original series was so full of Mormon theology, that the new remake was always going to have religious undertones to it.
Still, they could have toned down the "Starbuck is space Jesus" thing a bit.
Quite often, I suspect. Technically, they should be able to use the transporter and buffer to copy and save the state of people too.
Log all the lifesigns on the ship. This is done every morning, or whenever people board or leave the ship, or just before people head out on an away mission.
Compare log to previous saved log. If there's any difference, notify command to investigate.
When beaming an away party back, beam them directly into quarantine until they've been checked against their medical records, or the pre-transport saved state.
If the ship is boarded during an attack, beam all non-registered lifeforms into space (or into the replicator nutrient pool for reuse)
If an away team member is killed, restore from your transporter backup.
Struggling with an engineering problem? Copy a few more Geordies from the stored transporter state.
True, but if someone pointed and said "Eww, is that one of those Nazi cars?", I'd assume they were pointing at a Tesla, not a Ford (or even a Volkswagen or Mercedes, oddly enough).
Perhaps the year when Max Romeo (or The Prodigy) finally chases the devil out of Earth.
