  • That background has to be AIgen, right? It's a doorway in the middle of a an open area of a church, no walls around it, leading to super steep stairs that appear to go nowhere, and... carpeted floor?

  • Sure, I totally agree that when you're dealing many with orders of magnitude, the factor of 3 is dwarved by the other uncertainties.

But we're talking about our solar system, and specifically the orbital mechanics of our planets and sun, where the quantities and scales only span a couple orders of magnitude in total. A factor of 3 absolutely makes a difference. That's the difference between the orbit of Mercury and the orbit of Earth.

Then there's the practical point that, regardless of scale, rounding a known constant by that much makes no sense at all, unless you're trying to estimate huge numbers in your head. If you're using even the simplest of calculator, estimating pi as 1 is a deliberate choice to reduce accuracy.

  • Nah, there is no way any astronomer studying orbital mechanics in our solar system is rounding pi to 1. There is virtually no practical calculation you could do on the mechanics of the sun or planets where rounding a known constant by a factor of 3 would yield any useful result whatsoever.

Rounding pi to 1 only makes sense when the uncertainty in the numbers is large, not the magnitude of the numbers, and we know the masses and distances of the objects in our solar system to an amazing level of precision!

Plus, the fact that Jupiter is massive enough to actually exert an influence that large on the sun is pretty fucking cool!

  • Jesus man, if you're going to post shit like that, at least hide it behind a spoiler tag with a graphic violence warning or something like that. That poor cop's family might be browsing.

  • Fella here.

    Guilty!

  • I'm partial to the dill pickle beer from Giggles' myself. So refreshing on a hot day!

Also, I know it's a reddit thing, but I always got a kick out of the MN karma train

  • It's also kind of a dumb meme because relating farm animals to the working class and farmers to the owner class seems to reinforce, rather than challenge, the idea that capitalism is natural. And it implies that the working class is too small-minded to manage the means of production, because of course the idea of a donkey running a farm is absurd.

It honestly smells kinda trollish in that regard.

  • Vot de fuk!?!?

  • I've been playing Borderlands lately, and this feels like it could have been lifted straight from a side quest with Hammerlock!

  • Thigh high stockings under a hospital gown...

  • Why is he able to continue dismantling the country? Because a significant number of people support what he is doing in some way or another.

Why do they support him? Because his messaging, as inane as it is, resonates with a lot of people who genuinely see him as a strong, confident leader.

Why do they see him as a strong confident leader? Because he talks and acts like a schoolyard bully, and a lot of people mistake overcompensating for insecurity as confidence.

It's not going to work on all of his supporters, but just like with the Epstein Files (WHICH HE STILL HAS NOT RELEASED), if some chunk of his supporters see the emperor is naked, it erodes the mystique. Fact-checking him is useless because Trumpism is all about feelings--at least SOMEONE is realizing this and taking advantage of it.

  • Yeah, Energy + Money needs to be like your first 5 years out of university, assuming you landed a good job. Most of my adult life has felt like a full money bar, but empty time and energy.

Here's to getting old I guess, so at least I can have some time again! 🍻

  • They had us in the first 89%, not gonna lie!

  • I can't tell if everyone else got whooshed, or if we're getting whooshed.

  • Honestly I didn't even think about that part. When I first heard the interview on the radio this morning, I imagined they were talking about experienced massage therapists or something. Nah, they were kids working their first job, not even out of HS.

You're 100% correct that under normal legit circumstances, not even their direct supervisor would give a shit about a 17 year old changing service industry jobs. The fact that Trump not only knew about this, but cared about it to this degree, is very fucking weird.

  • Yep, they are convection ovens on steroids when it comes to the amount of airflow.

I was firmly on team "LOL it's a baby convection oven, big whoop" for years, but an actual purpose-made air fryer (not a toaster oven with air fry mode) cooks like an entirely different appliance.

  • Maybe that explains why the fancy Japanese KitKat flavors never live up to my imagination, despite Asian snacks and candy being generally superior (to my tastes) to similar western items.

Oh well, now I have a good reason to not bother trying them any more.
