  • Tech-literate non-programmer who gets most of the jokes posted here... that's what I thought at first, but it seemed like a clunky joke.

The moment I clicked into the comments and saw someone mention interrupts, the joke made so much more sense!

  • As a longtime McMaster user, our work recently tried to get us to switch to Fastenal and/or Grainger as preferred suppliers because of some bullshit procurement dick-waving (they wouldn't offer us a blanket 1% discount like the other guys, or something)

It's honestly astounding how bad their websites are, compared to just about anything else, even if you have the manufacturer's exact part number.

But yeah, McMaster is awesome, and there was enough hell raised that they were back on as a preferred supplier within a few months. Like, what even is a 1% discount when it means your engineers and maintenance guys are spending untold hours fighting a shitty website to find that one specific component that McMaster serves you up in 4 clicks?

  • Right!?

It's also not safe to consume - drink too much or too fast and you can drown or die of hyponatremia.

  • Yes, the kilo-wat. For when a simple "wat" doesn't accurately capture the absurdity of the situation.

For example, asking junior to put an atomic wafer in the power box, when you are standing right fucking next to it.

  • Well you see when 3 men love a woman very much....

  • I hate that I didn't immediately spot this as satire. It wasn't until I reread it and digested "mild cases of death" that I realized it wasn't some antivax nonsense. ☹️

  • Personally I deal with it by prioritizing the data.

I have about the same total size Unraid NAS as you, but the vast majority is downloaded or ripped media that would be annoying to replace, but not disastrous.

My personal photos, videos and other documents which are irreplaceable only make up a few TB, which is pretty managable to maintain true local and cloud backups of.

Not sure if that helps at all in your situation.

  • "Decentralized network of forums" is probably the best way I've heard it described, as an elder millennial who grew up on multiple disparate forums.

The email analogy doesn't resonate with me because I, as a Gmail user have less than nothing in common with any other Gmail user. On the other hand, the idea of being able to log into my car enthusiast forum and interact seamlessly with people from a video game enthusiast forum is much closer to how I think the ideal Lemmy experience would go.

  • Sure, that's exactly what I said. Speaking of tools...

  • Calculus is a tool used in science, absolutely. But calculus itself is not science, in the same way that a chisel is not woodworking.

  • Cold air tends to be very dry, which can most definitely irritate your nose and throat (among other body parts). That irritation and drying out can make the thin skin and mucous membranes more vulnerable to attack from bacteria and viruses.

The only really unscientific part of your post is that the cold air itself is not the direct cause of illness.

People with a strong immune system might not see a big difference, but if you are already more susceptible to getting sick, then the link to cold air may be more obvious to you.

  • Having been surprised to see Tool twice in this thread, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Between Maynard's voice, and the basslines OP mentioned, they definitely have a distinctive sound, and I could see how it could blur together as background / casual listening music. Especially if you listen to mostly mixes ot playlists.

Personally, I almost exclusively listen to music by album, and I think thats where Tool's songs really become more distinct from each other.
