  • I know you're being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but being an honest, trustworthy, and genuinely pleasant person to deal with will let you get away with at least a 10-25% premium in my opinion (depending on project size). More importantly, if you can deliver that service without charging too much of a premium, you'll be the first, and maybe only, person I call or recommend for the next project.

  • I think you're partially right, but only about everything having a separate app.

    The reality is connected devices will be so ubiquitous and commonplace that the interface will become standarfized and totally tansparent. Connecting to any arbitrary device will be as simple as connecting to an arbitray web server through a browser.

    Every device needing its own app is temporary and unsustainable.

  • I think that's a different question than the point I was trying to make. By all means, educating people as a way to "de-program" and shield them from propaganda is probably the most effective defense, followed by going after the propagandists themselves.

    But however you go about trying to fix those systemic issues, it's important to remember that falling for propaganda isn't solely an individual failing. Intelligent and powerful people have been attacking education and unbiased news sources (among other things) for decades, precisely with the goal of making people more susceptible to their propaganda. Maybe they should know better, but a working class person, whose main focus is feeding and housing their family, is at a severe disadvantage in an information war.

  • The flip side of that is that propaganda is used because it's proven to work. Yes, we should encourage everyone to individually think critically and be alert for propaganda. But I don't think blaming individuals for falling for a concerted effort to hijack their brains is helpful.

    I find the argument you're making uncomfortably close to the ones conservatives use to argue against social safety nets and to avoid discussing systematic reform: namely that people need to take responsibility for their success or failure, and that if someone doesn't succeed its solely due to individual failings.

    In both cases, the idea is that it's more helpful to address the negative systematic forces than just to blame individuals for falling victim to those forces.

  • Honestly, government agencies holding each other accountable by jealously guarding their own powers and independence to operate is how a government of checks and balances SHOULD operate.

    It's when those proverbial small town cops start teaming up and refusing to hold each other accountable that the public needs to start worrying. For the US, that point is about 25-30 years ago though.

  • Situations like yours are the other half of why this is all so maddening. Health insurance used to be a job perk, but now its being used as a noose to keep people tied to their job or risk not being able to afford healthcare for their family.

    The ACA was a small, and wholly inadequate, step to fixing that, but at least a step. Fuck the GOP for trying to take even that away. It seems like even the reddest MAGA should be able to appreciate and encourage what you are trying to do.

  • Type 1 diabetic here. With my insurance I pay $40 for a 90-day supply of two different types of insulin. I literally feel nauseous when I see the "retail" price printed on the receipts edging on $1000.

    I know that number is mostly there to make me feel good about the "generous" insurance company, but at the same time the mail order pharmacy I use flubbed up one time and billed my CC for that amount, so that retail price is real in some sense. I fought them on it, but ultimately it was easier just to pay and hit my deductible sooner. I realize I'm damn fortunate to be in a situation where an unexpected $1k bill is just an inconvenience.

    I'm not sure what my point is, but this system where commodity drugs are priced at exorbitant prices, and made affordable only by paying a middleman, is insane. Clearly drugs like insulin can be made and sold at a reasonable price, and if it takes a government body to step in and treat critical drugs as a public service rather than a profit-maker, then fuck it let's roll with that!
