  • Damn! Very glad to know you're still with us! Was it suspected or totally unrelated to why you got the imaging?

  • Well essentially I had a bit of an odd biopsy result and one of the possibilities can be a strange hormone effect. I wanted a second opinion on the biopsy to make sure it was benign. I also recently had some blood hormone testing which doesn't seem to find anything too odd outside of the possibly of way earlier menopause than normal. The second opinion was benign which made me happy. But then the doctor suggested an MRI to have a better look at my adrenal glands (which are also producers of hormones) and ovaries. I think because she noticed that I have excess hair on my face and body. This can also be due to a hormonal effect, but this particular hormone wasn't tested and would not have effected the biopsy.

  • What happened of you don't mind me asking?

  • Haha yes I work in healthcare and we used the world "incidentaloma" when I was in school lolol.

Sometimes things diagnosed incidentally do save people's lives though. I had an uncle diagnosed with renal cancer indicidentally when they were imaging him for some other reason. He had the kidney removed and has been cancer free forever now...might have been more than a decade ago. In many cases, a random scan can save someone's life.

But the other hand causes things you describe, unnecessary stress and intervention for otherwise benign but odd things that people see. It's one of the big reasons why you don't generally just get an MRI just to get one.

I've been fighting back and forth with what to do in my mind here.

  • Potential monetary cost, "wasting" medical resources needed by others, possibly finding something incidental but benign leading to unnecessary further testing/surgery/etc. There are reasons why these generally aren't done willy nilly.

  • I'll copy a reply I said to someone else.

"Well it's funny because they are the second opinion I was referred to. Had an odd result to something so I wanted to make sure it was fine. The second opinion also said it was fine which made me relieved, but then they asked if I wanted an MRI. At first I was like well ok sure I met my deductible but now I'm like wtf am I even thinking."

  • Ah gotcha! There are actually a lot easier ways to find out if PCOS is on the table. Blood hormone tests and ultrasounds can help and are super easy for an office to do! Hope your doctor actually wants to help you out and investigate these things.

  • Endometriosis?? I've heard that sucks major ass. I actually work at a hospital where patients get a bunch of tissue from their abdomen/pelvis removed when it is involved by endometriosis. I always wondered if that helped these patients much or not.

Endometriosis can be really fucking crazy too. I've very rarely seen it do wild as fuck things like explode an appendix or even cause a bowel obstruction!!!!

  • Nah, ordered by a physician. I did not even bring up the idea.

  • I guess that's why I never understood relationships or romance. I don't have the urge or capacity to feel sexual things, so being in a relationship goes out the window with 99% of people. And then what would I even be doing in a relationship different than a friendship? Sorry idk what I'm trying to say...just blathering as a lifelong lone wolf.

  • Huh...I guess I remember this dude. Interesting that someone decided to archive these.

  • I'm on board with you. Yes, some things are a bit worse, but most things are the total opposite. All I see online anymore are doomers and I just don't have that mindset anymore. Makes most of the internet (Lemmy in particular) unrelatable.

  • I wouldn't say it's necessarily totally unhelpful. I have extreme emotions and would get frustrated about it, but I recently learned to look at them a bit differently. Emotions are like data. They are signaling something to us. In this case, they signaled something that OP analyzed and then wanted to talk about. Negative emotions tell us that something doesn't line up right and we need to look at why.

Some of us unfortunately just have the intensity of that dial turned up to 11. Makes for some hairy scenarios sometimes lol.

  • Such is the struggle of being hydrated. Tbh it's one of the reasons I can never see myself become a "hydro homie".

  • You know another big thing I learned that a lot of people probably don't know is that a lot of cats just like flat out...don't drink water for some reason? Most of us are used to any given animal drinking water when thirsty. But a lot of cats just like... don't. I guess a wet food diet helps a lot with this because it's got water in it. Sure it's a little bit more hassle and expense over dry food, but not that much. Def gonna keep my guy on wet food for the rest of his life.

  • Ok. Your experience is valid. But you have to admit that what happened to your cat was an uncommon scenario and it is flat out just not going to happen like that a majority of the time. The person you responded to was not calling you out directly for speaking on your experience.

  • Really? This is wild. I'm in a hot part of the US and it's 95F/35C and humid daily here. I'm honestly really surprised with how much AC blasts here that heating still takes up the majority of nationwide energy consumption.

  • How in the world does such a comprehensive article not include JIS? It looks like it was once included but then it was removed due to poor citations. Wtf why was it not added back? It is very distinct from Philips and if you use a Philips driver on a JIS screw, it strips the shit out of it.

JIS screws are denoted by a small dimple in one of the corners of the + on the screw.
